  1. It says 10 'till 3 in the title, but isn't it usually 10 'till 4? Andy.
  2. Just to add... We also do computer repairs at the Repair Cafe, Including free operating system and software upgrades. So if you've got an old PC still clunking along on Windows and want it upgrading, bring it along and we'll see what we can do. Remember to bring the power cable (and screen if it's a desktop) so we can plug it in!
  3. I totally agree, It could be much better with better leadership. To be honest, the excuse 'they;re just volunteers' doesn't hold water when you look at the amateurs on Youtube etc, many of whom are making excellent comedy, documentary and instructional shows, often using consumer equipment with no more specialist equipment than you would find in the avarage bedroom. Amateurs with a bit of talent can be capable of great things and I know for a fact that some did submit show proposals to SLTV. However they were totally snubbed, some not receiving so much as an e-mail thanking them for taking the time to submit a proposal. From what I've seen of the SLTV output it's still little more than a bad joke. newsreaders who can't even read the words they've written without tripping over themselves and apparently nobody capable of making anything other than a short student film. Proper programming on proper stations generally never has a running time of less than 30 minutes including ad breaks. Most documentaries run for an hour and movies at least 90 minutes. SLTV flits from one runbbishy short video to another like some sort of terrible so-called 'performance art' project. I doubt very much that SLTVs viewers are counted as normally they have to reach a set minimum number before they even register. S4C (the welsh version of Channel 4) famously had a soccer show called 'Scorio' which scorred a big fat zero in the BARB ratings. Even if everyone who could receive SLTV did watch it, I doubt it can be received by enough people for any of it's shows to be counted.
  4. Hi Michelle. Bring it down and we'll see what we can do. Ring some new batteries with you to try it though.
  5. Clips of the attrocious SLTV are now filtering through onto Youtube. If you need a laugh go take a look. Best one is the worlds worst news reader, who I am reliably informed is actually their Assisgznt Head Of News!!!!
  6. The bi-monthly Repair Cafe event returns to Heeley City Farm this Saturday, 29th November. This is a volunteer run event where you are invited to bring along all your broken stuff to be repaired free of charge. It's all about saving money by repairing and re-using things rather than sending them to landfill. You can even sit with our friendly team and learn how to repair stuff yourself. Over the years we've fixed all kinds of things. Bicycles, electrical items, lawn mowers, computers, kitchen scales, antiques, furniture, all kinds of textiles. We've even repaired an old pair of boots! If you can get it along to Heeley City Farm between 10am and 4pm we'll try to fix it. We challenge you to bring the most unusual thing you can think of!
  7. It was in what appears to have been a pre-recorded short film that apparently nobody checked before transmission. Proper schoolboy error stuff. If it had been life it would be understandable. being on that channel would probably be enough to make anyone swear!
  8. If you count swearing before the 9pm watershed as an improvement then yes, there have
  9. I'm more than happy to take over should OfCom decide to re-award the licence to a more professional operator. Also, if you care to look back at this thread you will see that I initially supported SLTV (as it was known back then.) However, I object to the money I pay through TV licencing being spent in supporting such an amateurish organisation. My suspician is that many of their volunteers are probably doing their best, but are not being given the tools to do the job or the correct backing and training by the paid staff in charge. As I said, the so-called 'hyper-local TV' business model is fundamentally flawed because the station will probably never be able to generate enough revenue from it's limited catchment area to produce enough quality programming to fill a complete and balanced schedule. In America local stations are normally affiliated to the big networks and carry much nationally produced programming, which attracts a substantial audience and in turn substantial advertising contracts. Just because SLTV is a channel for the people of Sheffield does NOT mean it all has to be about Sheffield. The city doesn't have a wall around it. There is life on the outside. However SLTV seems to insist on this 'do it yourself' attitude. At least London Live was wise enough to know it couldn't fill it's own schedule at launch and bought in a number of popular programmes from outside producers. The simple truth is SLTV had 2 years to get this right and just haven't managed it. Any TV industry professional will tell you it doesn't take that long to learn how to key out a green screen properly. There are kids on Youtube who are more competent broadcasters than anyone on SLTV.
  10. I just tried that link. There is inded a player on their website but, surprise surprise, it doesn't work. It's 17 minutes past 8 on Tuesday evening, right in the middle of prime time, and as far as I can tell the channel is down. Now, if I was an advertiser (or one of the investers who have reputedly given then £150,000) I'd be a bit upset The whole thing is totally laughable. Most of the radio presenters they had didn't get any response when they submitted show ideas, the first of which went in nearly 2 years ago. But what is really concerning is the people running the Tv side are media students from Hallam who really should be able to put together something better than the rubbish that's going out. As I've said before, I think OfCom should step in and take the broadcast licence off them as they are obviously incapable of providing the service. Maybe they're not transmitting online because they know if people see what is going out then OfCom will be deluged with complaints and have to take action. Apparently the Uni in Nottingham is using SLTV in ther media studies course as an example of how NOT to do it!
  11. I've totally changed my mind about SLTV. I was prepared to give it a go when they first talked about it, but now I definitely think OfCom should revoke their licence immediately. They have totally failed to deliver anything close to what they promissed in their initial bid to operate the channel. At least London Live has proper programmes made by properly trained and experienced TV crews. Also why all the asian music etc? Ethnic minorities account for less than 10% of the population within the channel's Freeview catchment area. Bear in mind we are all paying for this shambles through the TV licence fee (the channel has major funding through the BBC), so if we're ALL paying the output should be geared to ALL of us. Where have they found these terrible people? They're not the radio presenters. I know for a fact many of the radio volunteers had their programme ideas snubbed and some have even gone down the motorway to Notts TV, where they have, by all accounts, received a warm welcome. Technically, the opening night broadcast was shockingly bad. The fact some of the people there are volunteers shold not have any bearing on their capabilities. Just because they don't get paid, doesn't mean excuses should be made for them and theior obvious lack of training and / or skills. These days there are school kids working on their home computer who can key out a green screen properly, so why can't the people at Sheffield Live manage it? They've had two whole years to practice? To sum up, the content is poor, the production is worse and the whole business model fatally flawed. BBC and ITV struggle to get an audience for their local news, so why do we need more? Until they can come back with shows of the creativity and quality of Strictly, Eastenders, Family Guy, QI, HIGNFY, Corrie etc, they should do the decent thing, admit defeat, hand back their licence and let someone else broadcast who can actually deliver what they promise!
  12. Ok, here's the thing... I've just built a cargo trike, a three wheel bicycle with a box on the front. They're common in Holland and similar to the old ice cream bikes we used to get in this country. The thinking behind it was to use pedal power, like we're always being told to, instead of my car. Now, having built the bike, I find the council install stupid gates at the ends of most cycleways, so I can't use them! I've loked for any documentation about the size of gateways to cycle paths etc, but can only find a booklet from the department of transport which says gaps should be at least 1m and ideally 1.5m as a minimum. Those in Sheffield and surrounding area are nowhere near that! So two questions... 1. Who should I be complaining to about these stupid barriers? 2. Are there any off road cycle routes in the area that a trycycle will fit down? My trike is about 86 cm wide. Andy.
  13. Sheffield is an awful place to get to and get around. There is plenty of car parking and plenty of vacant land where they could build more. However the car parking is not full even now because of the high charges. £5 to park your car for half a day after you've already spent £10 in fuel getting there is ridiculous! Then you have to walk miles between shops etc and walk back again because if you move your car to the other side of the city you would have to pay again! And as for public transport... Don't even go there! You can travel on a dirty filthy bus which may or may not turn up on a random basis, then takes you to a bus station that is just a glorified greenhouse, freezing cold in winter and boiling hot in summer. That is of course if you survive your journey sitting next to some mentally deranged tramp on a seat that was urinated on by a drunk the previous night! Trams? We spent millions (it was our money they used) having the system put in, only for it to be handed on a plate to Stagecoach for their own profit. They now crush load every vehicle but never think to use any of the cash to buy extra trams. Just pack the cattle into the wagon and drag them round some convoluted route where all the housing got knocked down, just so it takes 40 minutes to get to Crystal Peaks! And if you tarvel by train you can enjoy the station 'water features' which guarantee your welcome to the city will be wet and icy cold, no matter what the time of year! In short SCC should stop demonising car users because there is no reasonable alternative. All parking should be a basic service and should be free of charge, paid for by the taxes on the business owners in the city who benefit from the trade. Buses should only be paid for by the people who use them. I object to paying for so-called "socially necessary" services. If they were THAT "socially necessary" then surely they would have enough passengers on them to cover the costs! Take the buses and trams out of the equation and a lot of Sheffield's traffic problems would disappear over night!
  14. I think you should give SLTV a chance. Apparently it's going to be available on Freeview (channel but won't be starting until late 2013 or early 2014. What a lot of people don't know at this stage (because it's not totally clear from the new website as yet) is that it's a community TV channel, so the content will only be as good as YOU (the community) can make it. There are a lot of talented people here in the North who don't get the breaks they deserve, so you might get a pleasant surprise when it actually goes to air. Give it some suppoert and it might be a very successful service, much like the Public Boroadcasting Service in America.
  15. Thanks for that Skeggy! Looks smaller than the one we have here, but maybe that's because ours has a long flat bed over the load area. It's given us some great pointers about the missing bits though! Andy.
