  1. Regarding the Lescar,. All these arty farty bistro eating, drinking houses are completely heartless and a far cry from what Sheffielders are all about. Unless it's changed we always were a really social bunch and more places like the Lescar is what is needed not less. I could leave Sheffield for years and be confident that I could go to the Lescar and pick up with old friends. It should become a listed property and its use preserved by legislation. I've known Cath for only about 35 years and a more patient caring old girl you could ever wish to meet. Nothing is going to get that old lass down. I'm sure if she ever came close, it would have been when her boys were in their teens and her old man had been barred from the Lescar for causing trouble, He spent all his days at home grumbling. She out lived old Harry her second and I'm sure that's when her life started. She's got a lot of catching up to do so help her out if you can and get one in for her wherever she may be supping and for goodness sake dont get on her way if she's on a mission, lmao. I also heard that some youths were smoking pot around the back of the Sheffield courthouse. I just wonder if they're goin to close that down too.
  2. After 22 years in Australia I finally pulled the pin and have come home. I am living in possibly the most beautiful place on earth. On a North Devon farm. Do I still class myself as an expat? I went back to Oz for a daytrip in september just to be sure farmlife is what I wanted and this it definately it. Regards.
  3. Yea Don I Know him well, Ewan Meboth, spits alot and walks backwards. Perhaps I have not been totaly honest, I have no intention of ever living in Sheffield again, the colonials are welcome to it. I will be living on a farm in Devon with friends near a country pub called the Muddiford, anybody know it? It's not far from Ilfracoombe. I intend to visit Sheffield first though if I can get an Indian visa. It's hard to leave Brisbane and I'm not on the plane yet so owt could happen but our lass is keen as mustard and her vote is what counts, funny thing is she's Ozzie and loves England too.
  4. 40 degrees is far from boring especially when you work in a steel shed. I long for a morning when I can see my breath in the air, the crunch of footsteps in fresh snow and summer nights that last beyond 8 o'clock. I want pint in Edale after walking up Kinder Scout I want a bacon and egg sarnie that isn't full of letuce, beetroot and cucumber. I want a big slab of bakewell tart with custard and a box of doughnuts covered in coconut ice not cinamon powder, victory V's and sherbert lemons. I just want MY culture back.
  5. I went to an all you can eat smorgasborg last week and was really looking forward to it untill I got to the counters loaded with food and nothing at all took my fancy. Thats how it feels being away from home, nothing hits the spot. Life is comfortable here but I am completely surrounded by no Yorkshire folk. Whats it all worth if you are away from your kin? One day follows another till you die so I'm packing a case and coming home. Get a pint of tetleys in for me. Regards
  6. After 21 years in Australia I think I am coming home, the convicts only got 7 years. I really need to know how to survive back here, any tips would be helpfull like eating cheaply so any budget recipes would be a help. Where to shop and where to buy a car at the best price etc. Where not to live and how to get the dole:hihi:
  7. Is there still any engineering work in Sheff. I am an experienced metal machinist and had my own successful manufacturing business untill I decided to fold it and come home. If anyone knows of a vacancy for a fourtyish year old machinist email me no1machinist@yahoo.co.uk
  8. Having no fear or knowledge that things were going to change so dramatically
  9. Thanks all of you. I think the oven temp was the key. I didnt measure anything but they look like the twin towers. In about five minutes I'm getting into them with some lamb gravy. The first time I tried the hot oven I splashed the oil over my arm trying to get the pan out too quickly. It's quite amazing how quickly skin peels back with an oil burn. Well, not an expert but I think you have to be a yorkie to have a natural feel for it. thanks again. See you all later on the weight watchers forum:D
  10. This is something I have never been able to make with any consistency, nine times out of ten it sits like a brick and even the chooks wont eat it. I sometimes add sage and diced onion which makes it quite pallatable but its not the same so I am asking is there a yorkshire pud maker out there who is wiling to give a few tips to a starving pommie.
  11. In Aussie if you want work you will find it. But if you are a bin man in Sheffield don't think you are going to be a brain surgeon out here. There are vacancies in most fields (tomato picking or scarecrow:D ) it all depends if you are a worker or a shirker.
  12. I wonder how many prefab dwellers are still around because I would have thought that the asbestos would have finished them all off.
  13. there were two chip shops on Sharrowvale road within shouting range of each other one was called Two Steps but I need help with the other, then there was one on Hickmot road that went Chinese and did great chips and curry sauce. Think I should have posted this under "what I miss most about Sheffield" There was a hairdressers on Hickmott road called "Amanda Janes" can any body tell me more about it?
  14. They use a mobile crane to build the first five or six towers and then assemble the cab, boom and counterweights on top. self climbing cranes then use their hydraulics and lift up their weight and slip in more tower sections. When cranes do a jump they take as much as a day to climb five sections and thats when you notice them. I know about this because thats what her indoors does for a living.
