Accross the road from where I live is some grassy land.......what really annoys me is that EVERY mother ****** with a dog around the area loves taking their dog for a walk and allowing it to **** on the grass....blatantly not giving two hoots about the fact they can be fined for it and also their attitude of as long as its not on my own back yard I don't care......can anyone tell me if it would be a good idea to write to the Sheffield Star and name and shame them?

Don't think that the Sheffield Star could print there names cos you don't have proof! It's the same as them calling the Star and saying you are a peeping tom (or mary  )! Maybe a word in the ear of the council could help in putting up some signs or patrols around the area (depending on size)!
Failing that, take some survailance piccies and make a leaflet up with the piccie attached and post it through these peoples letterbox's to let them know, people are watching and to pick up their dogs mess!
If that dunt work, just put some of the leaflets up on nearby trees, they'll soon get the message!
Alternatively you could always do a motion in their garden :D
I have a dog and I always carry a bag around with, if its in a public place then it gets picked up. If its remote like the countryside or a woods, then I see no need unless it was on a path. If we had a few more responsible people then this problem would be easily solved.
Unfortunatley there are a small percentage that are not fit to own dogs.
senseofplace 14-05-2003, 09:17 If it's council land, there may be Rangers assigned to it. They have the power to hand out on the spot fines for dog fouling. As do dog wardens - but getting them to come out can be difficult as they're quite busy with other bigger parks.
Or there used to be such a thing, believe it or not, as The Dog Mess Roadshow  , who would come out and hold a little event or at least drop around a load of leaflets and dog bags for you to hand out. You can try to find them - sorry I've no number, but I think it was the council's dog wardens who ran/run it.
If there are other people around you who feel the same way, the most legally acceptable way to take action yourselves is to position yourselves there at the most 'popular' times and hand out bags and leaflets to dogwalkers. Use of good humour is a must, and don't do it on your own - some people can get very ratty indeed.
If people feel that they are being noticed, and/ or approached, they will clean up after their dogs in shame. Which will become a habit in time. It's also worth remembering that if people think an area isn't used or bothered about by others, they may think it's an acceptable and fairly safe place to allow their dogs to foul. Setting up an action group for this bit of land if you care for it that much, would probably help immeasurably.

Moon Maiden 14-05-2003, 12:09 Be grateful it is on a piece of grass - we have some smart arse who thinks it is great to let their dog s*** at the end of our gennel/ginnel. If that fails then they use what little of a garden we ahve at the front.
If I catch the animal I will ring it's neck - won't be too friendly with the dog either.
On Hawksley Avenue in Hillsborough alot of the residents have posters in their windows about dog fouling. Perhaps you should try getting hold of one a few and plaster them all over the grassy area. Perhaps they may use the poster to take their dirt home or to the nearest bin.
Well done Mikey for being a responsible owner, wish there were more like you!!!!!

part-timer 16-05-2003, 01:38 My mother used a camcorder ( and made it quite obvious what she was doing) - when one bloke gave her some verbal I went round and dropped him in his doorway.
Strangely enough it happens very rarely now.
You can try and shame them but some people have no shame - perhaps a bullet in the dogs head would change the owners views??
please note DO NOT HARM ANIMALS but you get a longer prison sentence for doing it to the owners.
senseofplace 16-05-2003, 08:36 How about using the suggestions already mentioned? They take a little more work than thinking up nasty things to do to dogs and their owners, but the effort can be very worthwhile.
And yes, I have seen them work.

alchresearch 16-05-2003, 21:36 Most people who let their dogs cr*p anywhere usually aren't the kind of people who will accept rational conversation about picking up the mess.
When something similar happened near me, I decided to collect all the excrement and place it on the owners car. When it was HIS property being fouled it wasn't so nice and it never happened again.
kittykat 16-05-2003, 23:26 As humans, we all make far more mess than dogs ever will. Having a crap is nothing in comparison to all the waste (gases, chemicals, litter) we produce each day so stop moaning.
so i take it you crap on the pavement often then?
I've just got back from our clean up of Ruskin Park. People were out walking their dogs while we were there and it seemed to me to be the owners of the larger dogs who failed to clean up. The scotty dogs, spaniels and other assorted small / medium dogs seemed to come with owners replete with plastic bags. It was the larger dogs who tend to deposit several kilos of sh*t whose owners ignored our enteaties to clean up.
Other items removed from the park included broken glass, demolished kitchen units, brick, bags of cement, tiles, washing lines, etc. Why?
After 2 hours of hard work a local resident walked past and complained that she didn't see why she had to pay council tax for us to clear up after dog owners. (I just thought I'd share the last bit because it rounded off an otherwise perfect morning)
PS That's my hundreth posting, I think I'll have a small libation to celebrate.

One of life's great mysteries to me is the lengths people will go to to dump their junk in a park or other greenspace. Some will literally drive for an hour or more to a local beauty spot and hoik a sofa out onto the ground before driving off. Others will carry a washing machine or something similar hundreds of metres and hoist it over a fence. Why?
NO, don't tell me - having to pay to dispose of stuff. I'd say laziness, but i've seen incredible feats of strength and ingenuity put into practice by tippers.
As for complaining residents, my favourites are
being asked if I'm out on day release from a local detention centre
being asked what I've done to have to do community service
being told what a mess a place is and how nobody has any sense of community anymore by local residents who then retreat back into their houses and make themselves a nice cuppa while me and my volunteers do the hard work for them

Internetowl 18-05-2003, 07:26 what gets me is you can be setting up for a game of footie on what is a football pitch in the loosest terms 'good old council' , get the nets up and then some pratt with a mutt comes along and lets it drop its parcel in the goalmouth. This happened recently and our keeper, who's a big guy and a bit of a head case, simply scooped it up and dropped it in the pocket of the dog owner. The bloke was stunned but said nothing, our keeper is over 6 feet tall and 15 stone. We all gave him a cheer and the bloke scuttled off - if the bloke is reading this , then come back next season and he'll make you eat it.
kittykat 18-05-2003, 19:43 no speak for yourself mate.
kittykat u seem to be missing the point. thanks to the sheer idleness of some dog owners, children are forced to play in fields littered with dangerous faeces that can cause all types of diseases and even blindness. as well as that of course, theres the fact that the stuff is an eyesoar, smells, gets stuck in your shoes tread, and is generally a nuisance. at best its annoying and inconsiderate of people, at worst its damn right dangerous.
kittykat 18-05-2003, 20:57 haha - blindness my arse anyway youd have to get pretty damn close for it to do any damage even if it did cause anything like that, infact youd probably have to pick it up and eat it. Anyway I always pick my dogs crap up, i agree its unsightly- i was just just saying we all make a mess of stuff by littering and burning stuff for power. Whats MORE annoying about dogs is that they bark at everything - cats are better.
kittykat 18-05-2003, 20:59 Oh and its eye SORE you fool.
if kids are playing football on the pitch and someone falls into a pile of dog crap, and it goes in their eyes then it would cause blindness, also, imagine if a toddler was playing on a field and decided to pick it up and eat it (a common thing for toddlers to do, pick things up and "taste" them)
ok kittykat, u pick ur dogs crap up after its done its business - thats a good, responsible thing to do. if onyl all dog owners were like this, there wouldn't be such a dangerous mess.
alchresearch 19-05-2003, 10:34 As well as being unpleasant and unsightly, the main purpose of the law requiring people to pick up dog's mess is to control the public health risk posed by the parasite toxicara which can cause blindness if swallowed. Although the parasite can be found in cats, its main host is the dog, and its eggs, which can remain viable for up to 2 years are found in dog's faeces. If the faeces are left in parks, paths, verges, sandpits or play areas, they can be picked up on shoes, children's hands, the wheels of pushchairs, wheelchairs etc. It may take weeks or months after swallowing these eggs for symptoms to develop which can last for a year or more and include one or more of the following: headache, fever, sore throat, aching limbs, abdominal pain, sleep disturbance, listlessness, pneumonia, asthma. Eye symptons are not always present although blindness resulting from toxocariasis affects around 100 people a year and may develop 4-10 years after the initial infection. The main group of people at risk are children who play where irresponsible dog owners have allowed their dogs to foul without clearing it up afterwards. Fortunately the disease can be controlled if the faeces are disposed of immediately in a responsible manner.

Whether it infects one or one thousand, sh*t on the streets is disgusting and people should be enlightened enough in this day and age to clean up any mess they make.

Your quite right humans are destroying the whole planet and the dog fowling problem is small fry, but it should,nt be ignored.
All dog owners, including myself are responsible for there own pets and they/we should be forced to clear up the mess.
Its not so hard to do and takes a few seconds.
Why should familys and kids who go in a park put up with walking in other peoples dog s***.
A worse problem i get is other peoples cats digging up my plants and crapping in the kids play area in my garden.
That is another issue but cat owners are the worse culprits.

You're right there. As the owner of a 'few' cats I have to admit that it's an equally bad problem and sympathise. Cats can get anywhere they want to and, although they do tend to bury their muck, it still leaves the old 'gardeners surprise' in the flower beds.
My neighbour doesn't have a cat but I do apologise and make the effort of cleaning out any muck it leaves. I'm really lucky to live on a small cul-de-sac where most of the neighbours know each other by name and chat quite regularly. We even help each other out with the gardening! I'd hate for my moggies to spoil that.
The only solution is to get a cat of your own, fighting fire with fire as it were.
I have contacted the Council and await their response. I have also contacted the Sheffield Star's editor and it will be in the newspaper on Monday....so lets see what happens eh? I'm on a crusade to get rid of the apathetic and dirty ba5tards who allow their pooches to crap on us grass.
interesting article

Lets hope it works, if not try one of the alternative methods mentioned here.
I was wondering, anybody ever heard of anyone going blind or catching one of these diseases? or is it all a myth?
A lot of dog owners should be shot for allowing their animals to foul the places where people walk and children play. This type will put two finger's up to anyone who dare's to remonstrate, they should be banned from keeping an animal for life. It is not the pet's fault as they have to go somewhere, the owners are the one's to blame.

The problem with that is i.m the only one with a decent garden on my road so they have no plants to ruin, though i do have dogs myself and they do there business in my garden which is cleared up afterwards. Burns the grass in places though
I am a dog owner in fact I have two dogs of medium size. Everyday they leave deposits in my garden which I duly remove and dispose of responsibly. When out walking I take a carrier and an old trowel to clean up with if my pets mess outside of our own property. It is annoying to see that other dog owners don't do this as it tars all owners etc etc so until laws are enforced what can we do?
What else annoys me? Fag ends emptied from someone's car on my front. Kids and adults who litter without a care. People walking around with fighting dog breeds who look physically incapable of holding the animal if it should decide to strain at the leash. Dog owners who walk dogs without a lead - God I hate that, what are they trying to prove? I've seen two such dogs almost killed on the roads.
Each year in sheffield i organise the national ukboxerdog gathering and we put notices up asking everyone to clean up after their pets, we contact the council and they arrange to supply scooper bags and receptacles to put the stuff, we also re-inforce this on our web group message pages, the unfortunate thing is like toilet facilities for humans there is an acute lack of facilities for anyone/thing throughout sheffield.
We once met at rother valley and we had to carry bags of dog p_ _ round until we found a bin to put it in.
Please do not think that everyone is the same and does not clear up after our pets, i have not seen anything saying that today they saw someone clear it up and went and thanked them, it seems we brits are only happy when we have some minority to pick on.
what about all the drinkers that seem to think the city centre is one huge toilet and procede to urinate wherever/whenever they want or throw up everywhere, i cannot seem to remember seeing any messages slagging them off.
Internetowl 21-02-2004, 10:13 Where I play football, we always had this old fellow bring his dog, who always did his business in the goalmouth , every game the same, despite asking him not too - in the end I followed him with the offending article back to his home (he seemed in a rush that day) and I deposited it on his door step. He never came back. direct action is the only way!
