View Full Version : Football racism .
I do not know if I should mention this on Sheffield forum but I have just watched Panorama on T.V.
It appears that there is to be a European Football competition in Poland and the Ukraine this summer.
The scenes of racism portrayed in the programme have to be seen to be believed .
The football authorities are advising our black, Asian, Jewish or indeed any fans that may be picked out as not white to not go to this so called sports event.
Should these countries be the ones that stage these events and as part of the European Union should we not be making sure that our citizens regardless of creed or colour are not discriminated against in the Union.

Take it up with Sepp Blatter.

Thank you Frank ,I now know the thread is relevant.
i watched it too. it was indeed disgusting, but just to pick you up on a point, as i recall, the football authorities were not advising people not to go. this would cost them a fortune. it was Sol Campbell that was advising people not to go. just to keep it correct.

Nothing to do with the economic crisis frank, the issue highlighted on Panorama tonight stems from hooliganism, everyone is fair game to those people not just black and asian people. This competition should not have been given to Poland and Ukraine, it has been common knowledge for many years that those countries have serious football hooligan problems, couple that with the fact that they have very few black and asians in those countries.
Sol Campbell was wrong when he compared their behaviour with what he has witnessed in this country in the past, I have been going to football matches for over 40 years and never seen that level of hatred.
I find it incredible to see Ukrainian men giving Nazi salutes. They should ask their Great-Grandfathers about Operation Barbarossa...
I have been to football matches in the Ukraine and I can vouch for the hooliganism that is prevelant. The security make the fans cut off the tops of the plastic bottle of drink so that they will do less damage if they throw them.Crazy.

Perhaps their Great-Grandfathers were members of this lot?

ledbacklight 29-05-2012, 11:34 Hooligans in Poland are minority among other football fans. There's not many of them but they are loud and aggresive and they obviously attract media attention as their behaviour is unacceptable . I'm Pole and I'm really sorry about this BBC document, it's very invidious and unfair to the rest of Poles and competiton organisers, especially few weeks before competition's start. BBC just showed a bunch of kids, stupid hooligans that have nothing to do with real football and mood on polish stadiums. They are just narrow-minded idiots looking for excuse to fight with each other. In Panorama they forgot to admit that police in Poland is very strict to such behaviours and any punch-up ends in arrest with special 24-hours courts. Most of those huligans are banned to entry any stadium in Poland. And it's gonna be plenty of police and army on the streets during the event so there's nothing to get excited about
I was disgusted watching Panorama, both because of seeing this unacceptable behaviour and looking at such a propaganda. BBC showed some very small part of Polish society and put it the way like everyone out there are racist and antisemites. May just as well make document about EDL and show in other European countries as typical behaviour in England. This is ridiculous and very unfair to the rest of 'normal' people who are going to enjoy EURO and have a fun with football fans from around the world in friendly, kind atmosphere. But now most of people who never been in Poland and just watched 'Panorama" think that it's not worth to go there because you can be knocked about or killed on every step :loopy:
Sorry about my English, hope you plough through it :)
Happ Hazzard 29-05-2012, 12:05 Football supporters are too soft nowadays. They expect to go to the Ukraine and have cushioned seats and prawn sandwiches. The grounds and fans over there are no different to how they were here until Sky took over and took the game away from the average working-class man.

I agree. How dare they want to take their black skin abroad and watch a football match without being attacked? These people need a wake-up call.

I agree with your point. There is obvioulsy a hooligan problem in eastern europe which unfortunately seems to run alongside far right extremism but I thought ex-england player and radio presenter Stan Collymoore made a good pint on this similar to the one you have made. Would the BBC have made a documentary showing EDL footage, London riot footage, racist graffiti etc in the build up to the olmpics? While it's obvious Poland/Ukraine seem to have a problem with this digusting behaviour I would be confident in saying this is not representative of most Poles/Ukranians in or outside of football. Maybe a lot of eastern europian views are behind a lot of western europe but that's not for me to say but there is ALWAYS this kind a scaremongering in the lead up to a major football tournament no matter where it is held. There is possibly more grounds for the caution than in a lot of other countries that have held world cups/euro's but I would predict that there will be very little trouble when the tournament takes place. Even though their society may have an issue I doubt this will have much of a chance to rear it's head with the increased security and scrutiny and another key point is that the footage shown was from local derby matches where there is always going to be more of a hardcore of idiots, how many of these are going to attend or be allowed to attend international matches between neutral countries? Heard a lot of this "propaganda" before. Remember the warnings of murder and microwaving babies before South Africa 2010? That seemed to go quite well.

So "the working man" is a racist, ill-informed idiot then? You might have had a point if not in relation to this topic. Your point suggests you would like to see or take part in innocent people getting their heads kicked in whilst sitting in their seats watching a match as was shown in the doc.

The E.U. seems to be a time bomb at the moment the unemployed and dispossessed people are looking else where for leadership. This has happened before with disastrous results it seems as though a fairer system of distributing wealth is needed.

Football hooliganism is not a pastime for the unemployed or disposessed, the hooligan culture in eastern europe is about fighting it's that simple !

I will agree to a point about propaganda, however Poland has had some serious issues with football hooligans and that can not be denied, the internet is awash with threats to visiting fans of Euro 2012, OK some of it may just be scaremongering, but a quick youtube search will put most people in the picture with regards to the levels of violence involved. The Poles have had a hooligan 'fight club' league for some years now, search for Ustawka on youtube for proof of this too !
Had these issues been with English fans, UEFA and their cronies would not entertain a tournament here !
MonkeyRocks 29-05-2012, 17:33 I agree as I said before that Poland and probably a lot of eastern europe have hooligan/racism problems which are probably greater than ours but to be fair you could go on Youtube and search under any country/city/town's football teams and find violence.

Yes you could but the Eastern european hooligan issue is very much recent whereas much of the English clips are from the past, the Polish and Russian stuff is in a different league, as hooliganism has considerably been reduced in the UK it has greatly increased in the rest of Europe.
andygardener 29-05-2012, 21:21 Sepp is all over it I'm sure. Very moral guy.
Glamrocker 29-05-2012, 21:55 OK its a dream..John Terry lifts the euro trophy and then gets found guilty of racism, jailed and banned from football for life.....does that mean we have to give the trophy back..oh well back to 1966.... I remember it well

Yes lets not forget what we were like in the seventies. Some of the Eastern European countries are just forty years behind us thats all.
Not that i am in any way condoning the racist hooliganism,it is appalling behaviour.
I did live in Leeds in the seventies!
Don't know why i accumulated all this space, there isn't much more to say.

He needn't worry - Steven Gerrard will arrange for all the other players to wear tee-shirts to support him…
The irony of all this is that in winning the right to host Euro 2012, Poland and Ukraine saw off bids from Italy and Croatia/Hungary. Italy's bid in particular floundered on the issue of football hooliganism (as well as match-fixing). Croatia's own hooligan history includes the infamous Dinamo Zagreb-Red Star Belgrade riot of 1990 which many still attribute to sparking the war between Serbia and Croatia.

Yep the Croatians, Hungarians, Italians etc all have their own hooligan and corruption issues too !
