Hello all,

I wondered if anyone had got any web hosting recently - I'm wondering what the best deals are these days. I'm investigating for my brother in law, who has a site designed, not massive but needs to be reliable as it is for his business.

Can anyone reccomend anything?

I can't really comment on specific suppliers here as I supply premium business hosting (no downtime in 4 years apart from a move to a better datacentre) myself, but a couple of general bits of advice:
* there is no such thing as unlimited space or bandwidth/transfer. Also beware of "unmetered" deals
* cheap and reliable are direct opposites in the hosting industry

Good luck in your search.

Best,

Nathan

Shared hosting - £20 + VAT per year (100MB space, 1/2GB month traffic.)
(Linux/php)

Local datacentre - no reseller, >99% uptime over last 2 years (since new network connection), no call-centre, no bull...

Lots of people would class that as expensive in this industry. That price point seems fairly reasonable for a personal site.

I use macoman.co.uk for my hosting. Never had any problems.

Its £25 for the year, 500mb space, 7gb bandwidth, Mysql, php, 99.8% Uptime

Domains cost £8 a year for a .com and you can have 4 domains off the one account.

I take it your a reseller of removed.ext who should not state "Your customers won't know that you are reselling our hosting unless you tell them" - 'cause I found out (you should get onto TU and get them to sort out thier nameservers).

I find the best deal the free ones.... http://en.SaveItFree.com is a good one, they support unlimited space, php/mysql, cgi, and emails, 5 ftp users, blah blah blah..

there's no popups, banners, or such-like... Just sign up and go..

No problem.

Just so you know, I used the site checkdns.net, which reports on nameservers, IPs etc. The actual results (for your domain) are here (http://www.checkdns.net/quickcheck.aspx?domain=hallamhosting.co.uk&detailed=1) where you can see the nameserver issue for yourself:).

Another useful site is DNSStuff.com (http://www.dnsstuff.com/);).

shame the terms and conditions are in german, they may say you get unlimited space but it is unlikely because the amount of space on a server is absolute. Also it mentions nothing about bandwidth usage which im sure will be capped at a ridiculously small amount

I use bluehost.com. US firm, $96/year with free domain.....host up to 6 domains, 20 subdomains, 3000 POP3 accounts, 50 MySQL databases, PHP, Perl etc, 400Gb transfer/month, 15Gb disc space.

I'm happy with them after a few months there.

DO NOT use pay-as-you-host.com as they're utter ****e. A friend uses them....MySQL databases are supplied with root user only and no password, leaving you the only way to add a user is manually through phpMyAdmin so you have to know what you're doing. Even their premium package uses old versions PHP and MySQL, GDlib etc.
