I worked in a Bank in Hillsborough in 1960-63 and I'm pretty sure Newboulds bakery paid in to us and was situated reasonably nearby. bazjea 26-03-2006, 19:47 I worked in a Bank in Hillsborough in 1960-63 and I'm pretty sure Newboulds bakery paid in to us and was situated reasonably nearby. Newboulds Bakery was based on Penistone Rd just before the Swimming baths was still a bakery up to quite recently. burnttoast 26-03-2006, 19:57 Yes it was on Penistone rd .Was later sunblest . Recently demolished. PopT 28-03-2006, 07:04 If I remember correctly Fletchers bakery was at the corner of Beulah Road and Penistone Road. Next door was Pickups who made Tizer drink there and then next to Pickups was Newbould's Bakery opposite to The Victoria Hotel. One or two of the lads would come across to the Vic for a quick half, thirsty work that baking, I guess. Happy Days! retep 29-03-2006, 22:43 Fletchers 800 Penistone Road Scrounging a drink of Tizer, the proper stuff with bits in on the way back from Rivelin, from the little window at the side of the Tizer factory, they were the days. sweetdexter 30-03-2006, 01:04 In the yard at the Tizer factory was a pile of bottles that did not make the grade for re-filling. We used to sneak in and salvage the ones that looked OK and take them back for a refund. The would maybe have a chip out of the neck but the shopkeeper did not object. Do you remember the Threaded stopper with the red rubber washer? PopT 30-03-2006, 04:43 Retep Thanks retep, I thought my memory hadn't failed me. My mother used to do house chores for old man Fletcher when he lived near the top of Broughton Road which is fair opposite to where Fletchers Bakery used to be before it moved to Claywheels Lane. By the way Sweetdexter you still haven't given me my share of the money from the returned Tizer bottles. Happy Days retep 30-03-2006, 09:45 John Newbould & Son Ltd bakers was at the side of Fletchers, so looks likely they took over the premises when Fletchers moved. baldass 12-08-2006, 14:00 i worked for newbolds bread 39 years ago as a van lad Eccoray 23-09-2006, 01:30 I worked their aswell,as a van lad,and it was great.I went to Nottingham every day.Every day was a new adventure. The boy's,and girls of today cannot imagine what a thrill it was for us lad's being a van-lad. I was a van-lad for Fletchers and as you say it was a wonderful experience. It certainly brought a once reserved boy out of his shell and made me a more worldly-wise person. Peggotty 17-10-2006, 15:12 Just been reading through some old threads and was interested in the van lads at Newboulds. I wondered if anyone new my Dad, Stanley, he worked there for about 40 years. In fact it was Sunblest somewhere down the line too. Eccoray 17-10-2006, 16:58 Newboulds (Sunblest) Sammy & Susie where there on all their advertising.A pleasent pair they were. Garfield Weston (A Canadian millionaire) owned all of Sunblest,Westons Biscuits,Burtons Biccys, and loads of other food manufacturing companies, all over the world. Scotty, the manager when I was at Newbould was a bad ass mofo, and could get a bit mad at times with us vanlads. He used to put the fear of God up me I can tell you.Naa did not cross him many times. johnwilson 01-01-2008, 17:18 On a genealogy website someone was asking if Newboulds was a Notts or Derby bakers. Wasn't Newboulds also baked in Sheffield? I worked at Sunblest in Sheffield for 37 years and I was part of the history of AB Sheffield the Newbolds name was aquired by Sunblest around 1959 and there was also a second bakery in Bradford which survived until it was flattened in 2000.The confusion with Notts Derby may be the expansion of Sunblest who aquired all the plant bakeries across the UK in the 1960s their main achievement has been that there are no bakeries left but for four or five core bakeries around the country and no worthwhile product leaders.n I started as a drivers mate circa 1960 and left as site manager reporting to a general manager at the Nottingham bakery staincliffe 23-08-2008, 11:53 I worked at Newboulds Dick Lane Bradford for several years in the late 50/60s we had 100 vans Ford Thames 4Ds and Ford Pilots . I think Scottie at Sheffield branch was ex Bradford , i remember the lovely pork and egg pies from Davys Sheffield , we used to take a full one into the pub after work on a Friday night and share it with the locals , talk about early start my mate and me were walking up the yard at 4-00 christmas eve morning coming towards us was Leonard Chambers area sales manager who nearly lived there he put so many hours in , his remark "where have you been till this time" he was knicknamed "slick" . The hours we put in on the bread job sometimes 15 hours a day , could you see guys doing that nowadays, i enjoyed every minute 70 calls a day first one 5-30 in the wholesale green market in Bradford . Supervisors put in more hours than us ...it was a great time ...would do it again ..halcyon days . Peter 35 journey. Shem 30-09-2009, 14:22 my husband worked for newbolds then it changed to sunblest he left in 1967 staincliffe 30-09-2009, 20:32 Wasnt Bassetts alsorts in Beulah Road somewhere near to Newboulds (Sunblest) and Tizer pop , does anyone remember Davys pie manufacturer, they were bought out by our old friend Garfield Weston , it was a Sheffield company , we were supposed to be bread men but sold everything else , Burtons Biscuits , Wagon wheels , Jammy dodgers, even Brawn (ugh). That was a bit dodgy after a few days in the van , nice to remember , ex Bread man Newboulds Bradford. harmston 02-10-2009, 20:16 eccoray--baldass your comments about van boys are very true i started as one at tuffnells in mary st 1952 and was taught a lot by a number of drivers i worked with at 17 taught to drive with the aid of a 12 inch ruler you soon learned not to make errors in your driving Iwent back in 60 after been in forces and a spell on the buses and was glad to be back I wonder if any of the lads are still around it is a pity that firms dont have lads nowadays it taught us discipline and respect and not to be afraid of hard work mikeG 03-10-2009, 11:51 my husband worked for newbolds then it changed to sunblest he left in 1967 The surname of one of the blokes from Newboulds was Hillaby or was it Hillarby?
