View Full Version : Where is the best view of sheffield
Rockerman 17-05-2012, 21:13 Hi there
im looking for a cool place that i can get a photograph of the city centre (as much as possible of it)
Anyone have any ideas where the best place would be??
daniel3982 17-05-2012, 21:22 You get an amazing low view from Ringalow near the Norfolk Arms, or good closer views from Meersbrook Park or Woodseats or also from Greystones.
Skye Edge above Hyde Park terrace also has an excellent view as does near Arbourthorpe tram road or from the top of Myrtle Road.
Top of the Hallamshire Hospital or from the top of the Arts Tower. Just take the lift to the top ward floor of the hospital and go in the visiting room to get the view. I'm not sure about the Arts Tower now, but it used to be possible to take the lift up then just look out :)
East bank rd / Park grange rd
Teddybare 18-05-2012, 03:26 Probably out on door moor. Got the added avantage of turning round to view Derbyshire and not seeing grubby old sheff.
Best view of Sheffield ever

Vermont :)
2nd best view of Sheffield is laying on a beach in Australia watching a match at bramall lane on a portable tv.
the_rudeboy 18-05-2012, 06:41 My first thoughts were Skye Edge.
Plain Talker 18-05-2012, 08:15 from the top end of Norfolk Park you can see from the peak district, and the Roman road at Ringinglow right across to Wharncliffe, and Shirecliffe hill.

a good place is where shirecliffe collage used to be you could see that building from all over sheffield
Norfolk Park
or perhaps the top of Jawbone Hill which links Grenoside to Oughtibridge - a great contract of urban/rural.
Meersbrook Pearson place.
bladesman123 18-05-2012, 13:45 Slightly off subject, a friend asked me the other day - is there anywhere in Sheffield where you can stand and see both Bramall Lane and Hillsborough at the same time? (preferably at street level without having to get on the roof of a building)

Why would the temperature affect how good the photo would be? Anyway, as there's a strong northerly wind at the moment Meersbrook Park would be a good place to get a photo of the city centre.

BritishProud 18-05-2012, 22:43 Bishops Court RD, Meersbrook.
anywebsite 19-05-2012, 00:32 Park Hill, top of Granville road, top of East Bank Road, Park Grange Road, Skye Edge, Owler Bar. Just go to the top of a hill & you should be good.
Leah-Lacie 19-05-2012, 00:41 Meersbrook Park is great. I also remember getting a pretty good view years ago, near the Olive Grove pub (near east bank Road) from outside a school friend's house, think the road was called Madehurst View.

I would say the top of shirecliffe hill, though you would need to turn back and forth, as you'd not get both grounds in one glance.
JuncoGardner 19-05-2012, 09:40 Hi,
My favourite is from the top deck of a 95 bus (gets you that extra bit of height), rounding the brow of the hill between Commonside and South Road, looking down onto the centre. Especially brilliant at night. And it's a fleeting experience, one glimpse and it's gone!
Where is the highest point in Sheffield?
I always thought it was behind Birley school up Frechville.

no, Herdings, where the two remaining high-rise are, is higher than Birley, but I think Crosspool, where the TV mast is, could be the very highest point.
kcustard 19-05-2012, 18:28 Bolehills on Crookes has some amazing views
Chris412 19-05-2012, 18:30 Top of heeley bottom
HallamGirl 19-05-2012, 18:40 I'm sure there's been a thread on this before, but my bet would be the viewing point just off Fulwood Lane up at Ringinglow, where a cairn and plinth have been set up by the Rotary Club with viewing lines on lots of significant sights. On a good day, you can see 7 diffderent power stations, Emley Moor transmission mast, Lincoln Cathedral, as well as a wonderful panorama of Sheffield. If conditions are perfect, then York Minster and the nearer of the two Hull suspension bridge towers are supposed to be visible with binoculars, though on the number of times I've been up there, I'll admit I've yet to see them, though hope shines eternal !!
sparkles13 19-05-2012, 19:15 top of Meersbrook park go check out the sunrise

Whoosh77 20-05-2012, 22:41 If it's the city centre you want the best view is from the top of the new amphitheatre in Sheaf Valley Park behind the train station.
anywebsite 21-05-2012, 02:02 If it's the city centre you want the best view is from the top of the new amphitheatre in Sheaf Valley Park behind the train station.
The top of the hill behind it is better, just in front of Park Hill, at the top. It's still quite close & a low angle, so you don't get the full city centre.
Herdings is also a good viewpoint. Parkwood Springs, where the Ski Village was is pretty good too.
Most of the hills surrounding the centre, if you stand on the side facing the centre somewhere near the top you should get a good view.
The highest point in Sheffield is out on the border near the Derwent dams... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margery_Hill ... It's a bit too far out, I don't think you can get a good view of the centre of Sheffield there. The marker at Herdings is just the highest point on that hill, not in Sheffield.
Go to the top of Blake St in lower walkly. The view is spectacular. Then go in the Blake pub because the beer is spectacular as well

I'm in 'Upper Walkley' - our view's not bad from the top of Walkley Road ;D
Am sure we can see Wortley Hall across the way!

I shows a view from Redmires Road, which is not far away, but if you zoom out a couple of clicks, hover your cursor over 'Map' in the top right-hand corner of the screen and click on 'Earth', it shows you a green arrow, which seems about right. It's a spot adjacent to the bridge across the stream.
The best views are around Ringinglow.
If you head away from Ringinglow going towards Hathersage for about half a mile, you will get a great view over the city.
Sheftival 22-05-2012, 12:57 Sure it must have already been mentioned but Skye Edge is our favourite.
The top of Jenkin Road in Wincobank is my favourite. The first time I ever saw it was in the evening when there were lots of lights on and it made me catch my breath. You can see Meadowhell, Forgemasters, the city centre and lots of green space too.
GrannyGranny 22-05-2012, 16:36 Has the view from the Cholera monument been mentioned yet off Norfolk Rd?

In my first year at Poly (1986) I used to live round the corner from here and we used to have a sit at the bottom of the monument on our way home after a night out. It was pretty impressive at night especially for a young lad from the sticks like me.
KeziahRose 22-05-2012, 19:42 There's an amazing view from the top of greystones road and hanging water :)
