3 cop cars (and heli-chopper) chasing a white vauxhall astra, went up herries road around 10 minutes ago then proceeded around longley and then upto shirecliffe area, although missis moon informs me they have probably been caught as the helicopter is now leaving! Bl**dy kids!!!

Not much chance of them getting the bill for 3x police car fuel, and 1x helicopter fuel which has now been used up on chasing the vermin. Should be around £1000.

just spoke to my sister who went past the devonshire arms a little while back, she said a little fat kid (the description she used!!) was seen jumping over the gardens round there pursued by the police, im not surprised it cause damage to other vehicles as well, they looked like they were struggling to control the vehicle as they were zooming up herries road, we were due to go out at this time down that way as well, only being delayed by a stubborn chicken that refused to be cooked on time!! (bless that little chicken!)

Yes. I saw all the action twice. they came down Longley Crescent about 60 mph with 3 cars in pursuit. The second time, my neighbour moved his car across the road to try and stop them, but the driver just rammed his vehicle straight at him twice, then went onto the footpath to get away, damaging another vehicle in the process. The car was a white astra. Reg number [edited out numberplate]. Can anyone else who may have seen it, confirm the reg. number, in case we are asked for witness statements.

My son saw them go past our house on buchanan rd twice each time with police in hot persuit, young lad and lass as passenger,I wonder if it is wise for the police to persue these people at high speed through such a built up area,he sqid there must have been at least 5 if not more.I suppose not knowing if they had commited a major crime though,i may be jumping the gun,but round here it is more likely to be a banned driver well known to police

Chasing a white car with a young lad driving and a young girl in the pasenger seat. Came up the side of Longley Park and round the houses at the back of me, back down Longley park and onto one of the very narrow side streets, must have been 10 cars in pursuit that eventually came out, the spped in which he came out onto the main Road at the top of the park was phenomenal, it was good there was no traffic or pedestrians about.

Do you think the police are abit over the top when chasing cars? Especially in a built up area like ours, where there are always plenty of young kids playing out.But then again sometimes i feel they are a law unto themselves.

I think that the penalties such drivers as these should be far more tougher than they are at present. There is just no deterant strong enough in place to stop these so-called joy riders. It's just as well there weren't many folk about
otherwise we could have been looking at a third fatality in a week in this area

I think making them work off this £1000 ,at £5 per hour, might make them think twice, or withdrawing luxuries from their homes to this value might make home life for them a little less pleasant.:D

if its the same... then at the bottom of 'shirecliffe hill' (that steep road that leads down to pitsmoor) the road has been cordoned off!... diverted traffic down rutland road... plenty of cops about blocking the road, ambulance too.

Agree about the deaths, so many of them has happened here over the last few weeks and it's too many.

Do you think the police are abit over the top when chasing cars?

Well dont worry.. the recent(ish) report into fatalities / injuries during Police pursuits, which laid down the very strict guidelines that are now in place by which all pursuits have to be run, only just stopped short of banning pursuits altogether, with the threat that if guidelines were not adhered to the ban would become effective.

It is obvious that in the very near future the Police will be not be able to pursue a fleeing driver at all. Society is not prepared to accept aggressive tactics by our Police it seems, while they, well errm Police I guess.

One more note, about making assumptions why the Police are pursueing a driver... ie is it a disqualfied driver, no insurance, just kids joyriding, etc etc..
Put yourself in the same position, a Police Officer driving a patrol car, suddenly has a vehicle make off at speed away from them, and subsequently fails to stop when directed.. All you have is a fleeing driver.. you will not see their face, you will not necessarily know how many in the vehicle, (if its dark), you will not know the age of the driver/occupants.. Do you pursue or not..??

If its kids driving illegaly in a scrap car, will they drive any slower without you (Police) behind. What if you pursue and they crash, killing someone..?

Or is it a stolen car with armed criminals in it who have just tied up a bank manager at gun point. How are you going to tell the difference.? (you will have no other information to go on, believe me)

Good luck to all those who choose not pay car insurance, pass driving tests, pay car tax, etc etc in the future. Because chances are all you have to do in the future to get away with it, is exceed the speed limit and the bobbies will have to stop and let you get away.. enjoy..

I'm with morris1.

It's not the chasing police car that causes the danger, it's the vermin being chased.

good point, this should be added to the costs when they get caught and are found guilty, how much is it to keep a helicopter in the air,?plus wages for the crew and the back up team, would imagine it would make a big difference in taxes if young scroats had to pay for the cost of chasing and catching them

Just been informed by the neighbour who was rammed by the astra, that the police eventually caught the driver, although he didn't know whereabouts. Let's just hope he gets a severe penalty

Should apply to all cases where police time and resourses are used to combat crime - this includes rounding up of drunks and numpties of a Friday/Saturday night down town. The criminal pays the wages and costs, and the tax input for law and order is cut dramatically.

Police officer (each) including helicopter crew - £15 per hour or part thereof.
£1 per mile - wear and fuel per car.
£1000 per hour - helicopter.
£30 per night - drunks kept in cell.
£50 - cleaning up puke.

PLUS

Fine for offence!!

Fine for offence!!sounds right to me,about time the criminals were made to pay the full cost of policing and court time, not just a paltry fine and slap on the wrist, same with prison, a cost should be levied for the criminals upkeep, when they come out they should get a bill, payable on demand or if unemployed payable at a rate other than 50p a week

Was with my gf at shops near devonshire arms and they flew down towards herries headed past tesco, from what i know they then came half way down towards the northern general and turned up going past musgrave etc, were 6 in pursuit at the time and gf said there was a young women who to her looked pregnant, and a man in his mid 30's. Thought it was funny cause it looked like they were trying to loose the police heli, never seen that thing bank so hard before, even straffing to keep em in sight.

Sounds right about shirecliffe bottom as all the cars turned left and thundered down there. Is that usual just for a stolen car????.

Dont think that car had much left to work with so must have caught them not long after the blockade i would imagine.

Just my 2 cents and hope (though they prolly wont) they get a large book thrown at them.

Thing is they will more than likely go out and do it again.
