View Full Version : Direct Wing Chun Seminar
joeblackler 26-03-2006, 14:01 Hi all,
I recently started instructing a wing chun class which i opened on Ecclesall road before christmas. Things are going well and I will be organising a seminar to be taught/instructed by the Direct Wing Chun chief instructor Jim Halliwell for the begining of May (havn't sorted an exact date yet will be on a Saturday or Sunday).
The seminar will be attended by the students from my class any many from other Direct Wing Chun schools. Any other practitioners of wing chun will be welcome to attend regardless of their level.
For more details of this about this style of wing chun visit; www.directwingchun.co.uk
There will be more info here very soon so check back if you are interested or email me at jblackler23@hotmail.co.uk
Cheers, Joe
Davemantis 27-03-2006, 15:39 Jo what’s the price???????
I don’t know if I can make it as I have a couple of seminar to go to soon
But ill let my students know.
joeblackler 28-03-2006, 14:02 Hi Dave,
The price will be about 30 quid. I don't have a room finalised yet so it will depend on that but it definetly should not be more that 30.
The seminar will mainly cover the 1st Form and all applications of techniques and concepts within it and then look at Lap Sau and Chi Sau. In total it should be about 5 hours long plus a break somewhere in the middle.
joeblackler 28-03-2006, 14:06 quick after thought..
Can you let me know if you are aware any good rooms/halls local to sheffield centre for a satuday or sunday (10am-3ish)?. I have a list I will go through myself but if you know of any that would be useful. Cheers
Joe
Davemantis 03-04-2006, 09:01 Would the place you run your classes at not be big enough?????
funkyukgal 10-04-2006, 02:53 Hiya
Where abouts on ecclesall rd is your class held? Can you tell me when the classes are and prices please?
thanks
Not sure if Joe will be able to respond to this as he is away tonight so there is no class, but I go to those classes. They are in the Millenium Centre, the Polish Working Man's Club, on Eccy Road, opposite Nonnas.
They are £4.50, or I believe they are £3.50 for students, and last from about eight until ten.
You should come down one week (not this week obviously) and see what you think.
Hope this helps.
Lee.
Davemantis 10-04-2006, 14:35 Joe we still need to get the Chi Sau practice session organized any more ideas
funkyukgal 11-04-2006, 01:26 what days are his classes?
Whoops! Sorry, they're on a monday evening, 8 until 9.45-10 ish.
funkyukgal 11-04-2006, 21:49 dont suppose hes gonna start teaching on other alternative nights??
Haven't a clue. You'd have to ask him when he's back, but not sure when this is. Sorry.
Davemantis 12-04-2006, 11:12 Sifu Sam Kwok and Sifu Trevor Jefferson will be holding a joint Wing Chun seminar on Sunday 14th May.
£30 per person
The Bridge Hotel
Newcastle
12-5pm
Sam Kwok? Is that the Samuel Kwok who wrote The Path to Wing Chun? That was one of the first books I got on the subject.
Might have to go to this I think.
Davemantis 12-04-2006, 15:37 hoba
Yep Samuel Kwok
Trevor is one of his longest students (I think he has been training for about 30 years if not more), not a lot is known about him but he is one to go and see V-Good Chi Sau. I did some classes with him and one of his students, Trevor will be coming down to Sheffield later on this year to do a seminar so if you don’t get the chance to go there will be another chance soon.
so do you still do WC ???????
funkyukgal 12-04-2006, 16:28 Im gettin abit confused....are his classes on mons still going or stopped for the moment?
hi the classes are still running but joe was away april 10 and there is a 'double booking' type problem with the hall for the monday after, april 17. there was some discussion about maybe doing it on another night just for that week but joe would have to e-mail about a bit to find a night when he could guarantee enough punters to cover hall hire.
so there might be a class next week - just check back here for details.
things should be back to normal april 24 post easter hiccup.
funkyukgal 13-04-2006, 02:21 ok thanks for that...ill check back on here and might pop by after 24th :)

so do you still do WC ???????
Hehe, don't misunderstand me- I still do wing chun because I only started in November of last year. When I say it was one of the first books I bought on Wing Chun, it was, but that was this christmas just gone!
I think I may have ultra short-term nostalgia, reminiscing about something that only happened a few months ago!
Davemantis 13-04-2006, 09:11 hoba
where are you training???????
I train with Joe Blackler, but at the moment am trying to free up saturday evenings so I can maybe start with William Lai at the Chinese Community Centre on London Road.
Still just an ickle novice really.
funkyukgal 13-04-2006, 19:18 Erm i think Willaim Lai has left awhile ago to go to Bristol I think. Then again i might be wrong but last time i heard hes moved down south for work.
William has moved to Bristol for work, but he still trains students in Sheffield on a Saturday and his credentials as a wing chun teacher or impeccable - in terms of lineage you won't get anyone better in the local area, and he's a great guy as well.
hi, what are william lai's wing chun credentials please?
try looking on his website, or searching this forum, as they have been mentioned before, but basically when i refer to his credentials i am referring to his standing in terms of lineage, which is as far as i know unequalled in the local area. he's also an excellent teacher who is more than happy to share all his knowledge, as are his students, which makes for a productive environment for learning.
to tell you the truth i was questioning the lineage
Wlliam was taught by Chu Shung Tin (spelling?) for several years when William lived in Hong Kong, and he still trains under Chu Shung Tin when he returns to Hong Kong. Chu Shung Tin was one of Yip Man's first students, in fact he started learning under Yip Man before Yip Chun and Yip Ching, and he is renowned as the 'king of sui lim tao'. i have seen photographs and paperwork that link William to Chu Shung Tin, and if you search for Chu Shung Tin's schools on the internet you'll find that William is authorised to teach under his Sifu's lineage - the only person in the UK (possibly Europe?) authorised to do so.
