View Full Version : Where can I recycle carrier bags?
Back for today only! :)
I'm drowning in the buggers, despite my best efforts to ward them off in shops (how does that happen?).
Anyway, anyone know if it's possible to recycle them in Sheff, and if it is environmentally sound to do it in the first place?
ta.
I know that some Tescos and Sainsburys have carrier bag recycleing bins. I think Sainsburys at Millhouses does and I also think Tesco on Infermery Road does, but I'm not 100% sure.
You could give them to a charity shop who might be grateful.
I use them as bin liners.
metalman 26-03-2006, 12:26 Tesco's on Infirmary Rd definitely does recycle them, there's a bin just by the door.
There was another thread about this not long ago because I remember saying the same thing then.
dynamicdebz 27-03-2006, 21:48 Use them a bin liners, thats what I do!
Ramayana 27-03-2006, 21:56 not just charity shops but some independent health food shops will reuse plastic bags..
eg. a really cool health food shop called 'zed's on the edge' the edge being nether edge. it's near the traffic lights at the junction of sheldon road, moncrieffe road and nether edge road.
Onyx adviced me as recently as this month that is has been possible to recycle carrier bags in any plastics/can bins for around a year. They say they are still trying to work out how to re-do the signs on the bins which say 'do not recycle plastic bags in here'. Would it be too sarcastic to suggest that the signs could say 'do recycle plastic bags in here'.
What I don't exactly know is what happens to the plastic - onyx did confirm that the plastic is sent to a reprocessor who sell on the various types of plastic to be recycled. Did hear on radio prog that some recycling may be in foreign countries that are less concerned about emissions....
SallyLaLaLa 28-03-2006, 07:36 montie, there was a big article in some paper recently saying that loads of waste meant for recycling was just dumped as waste abroad. Some of it was traced back to Islington and somewhere round Newcastle. I will keep on recycling though, hopefully that's just a blip.
New Roots on Glossop Road or as a previous reply said you can put them in the plastic recycling bins.
Best thing is to reduce your usage of them. Refuse a bag when shopping and take a second hand one along with you.
Or to better your local area follow people walking dogs and use the bags to collect the poo
Sainsbury's on the moor have a recycle bin. Just in the entrance of the side door :)
I'd say dont get them in the first place. Its quite easy. you just have to get one of those posh carrier bags from somewhere like beanies and always take it with you. Get into the habit of saying, NO BAG when those pesky shop keepers try and give you one. You have to be ruthless.
I very much doubt that recycling them does a lot really.
you can put them in the plastic recycling bins.
Those plastics/cans bins often have a sign on saying don't put carrier bags in. People do though.
Do they get recycled if you put them in there anyway?
Tesco's on Infirmary Rd definitely does recycle them, there's a bin just by the door.

Are they just for their own Tesco carriers or can you put any carrier bags in them. If so we have loads to get rid of
I asked this a while ago...the abbeydale rd tesco has one for bags inside the store. Not sure about anywhere else.
any carrier bags go in them not just tesco
any carrier bags go in them not just tesco
Ooh good. I'll be making a beeline for Infirmary Road Tescos soon
