View Full Version : Selling a Guitar
Jordan 1989 16-05-2012, 20:14 Anyone know any trustworthy music / pawn shops I can trade in an unwanted good quality guitar for cash (although I would consider store credit / exchange if the deal was to be considerably better)
Since the demise of Steel City Guitars and the unnamed shop just above the top of the Moor our good city seems seriously thin on proper music shops. I know there's a few pawn shops around but this is a really good guitar and I don't want a raw deal just because the buyer hasn't a clue what they're on about.
shanes teeth 16-05-2012, 20:15 What is it?
not wanted 16-05-2012, 20:16 What guitar is it, you might be better off with a private sale.
Jordan 1989 16-05-2012, 20:17 What is it?
It's a Peavey Wolfgang with custom paint job and Floyd Rose D-Tuner. I understand it's a very good guitar that plays very well and is in pretty good condition... however it just ain't right for the type of music I'm in to.
shanes teeth 16-05-2012, 20:29 About how much are you thinking of?
Jordan 1989 16-05-2012, 20:31 Comes with a proper official Peavey case - so around £550-£600. My camera is out of action at the minute or I'd get some photos up too.
Jordan 1989 16-05-2012, 20:33 The picture here, although not my guitar is a very close representation, even the pattern looks pretty much an exact replica down to the positioning of the lines if that means anything to anyone...

LeMaquis 16-05-2012, 20:41 Don't flog it till you have an idea of its worth. Have a look on ebay first and sell it accordingly; http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=Peavey+Wolfgang+&_sacat=See-All-Categories
whoareya 16-05-2012, 20:46 I got guitar for £5 yesterday no strings attached.

I did browse Ebay - but it's difficult as nobody seems to have this exact guitar for sale. As I said I think the paintwork is a custom job, but I'm not sure if it detracts or adds to the value? I guess it would depend on who exactly is buying it. I think it's been on there a while or has been heavily gigged before it came into my possession as it is slightly worn in places, and looks to have been originally purple underneath.
wendelspans 16-05-2012, 21:39 Try Richtone on Broadfield Road.
Try advertising it on South Yorkshire Musicians Swop Shop on Facebook (preferably with pics) or even Real Time Music in Chesterfield.
My fella uses Real Time Music in Chesterfield
Jordan 1989 14-06-2012, 10:58 Try Richtone on Broadfield Road.
Think I might try this one - it's more convenient than Chesterfield for me being as I don't drive.
Is it a good idea to phone in advance do you know to ensure someone who can grade it will be around / know they'll be interested.
Forumosaurus 14-06-2012, 13:09 There's a guitar shop on London road which deals with second hand guitars. Probably wouldn't sell it to them because obviously they have to make a profit to sell it on, but they're a very friendly bunch and I'm sure they'd give you an idea of value.
BarryRiley 14-06-2012, 13:34 The best price you will get will be through eBay.

That's indeed true - but I really don't want to go through the hassle of posting a guitar unless the prices quoted in shops are really low.

Two going on e bay,
prices are $500-$600.
So £400-£500 Depending on condition.

Though it's true good music shops are thin on the ground i'd say Wavelength on London Rd and Richtone on Broadfield Rd are much better quality and more knowledgeable than Steel City or Big Deal ever were. I'd go and have a chat with the Wavelength lads. Always found them friendly and not on the make!

Agree with that,i get my strings from there. they are well priced and good quality.
Very knowledgeable about all aspects of music and very helpful.
Jordan 1989 14-06-2012, 14:47 Just decided to go for it and rang up both Wavelength and Richtone.
Wavelength instantly told me it was probably too specialised with the paintjob and would recommend Ebay, which as I said I do know is true but it just seems a lot of hassle.
Richtone seemed much more interested, suggested I email some photos or take it down there. Said depending on the quality of the paint job they'd judge it. I think it looks like a good job, although it's certainly not the style for me.
Might take some and get it down there!
Thanks everyone.
tommythecat 14-06-2012, 15:02 It's a Van Halen paintjob, in case you want to add that in the title description when coming to sell it. (See others like it here..http://snipurl.com/23xre4r)
Jordan 1989 17-06-2012, 18:52 Thanks a lot. I got my reply from Richtone after emailing them pictures. Not quite the dream offer I was hoping for, but with the fees on Ebay and the trouble of it all I'm tempted to go for it.
Wizard Guitars up Ecclesal Road is the only other place I can think of, and checking their website they charge you for a valuation! So forget that!
Jordan 1989 03-07-2012, 08:42 Latest update is I flogged the guitar to Richtone and they've got it up on their website... looks well I think.

Actually recognised one of the guys in there as someone who used to work at Steel City and the one that used to be (maybe still is?) up City Road.
Hi Jordan,
New member here and just found your post. Is your guitar sold or still on sale? Do PM me the price with your guitar picture so I will make up my mind to make a bid.
