Sucks.
I went to bed at 3am which is a little later than my usual 2am, and for the last three hours I've done nothing but lie there in bed trying to turn my brain off.
So here I am posting!
The problem with being a DJ is that I come alive when the lights go out.
But this is stupid.
Ideas on getting to sleep please. :D

I suffered from insomnia a few months back. I don't know if you experienced the same thing, but when I did get an hour or two's sleep, I had nightmares - really horrific nightmares. So I went to see a counsellor to speak about what was going off inside my head and she said it was my over-active mind. She says insomnia is comman in teenagers, especially those who are high acheivers, as their minds find it hard to switch off when the lights go out. She taught me a breathing routine which took time to perfect but was well worth it, and works when I can't sleep. I would also reccommend the obvious things, which are no coffee after 6.30, try to avoid snacking after your evening meal for example. I hope this helps you.

Try looking through these links...

You may find something of use (or fall asleep whilst looking :) )

Oh yeah.
Didn't even think of that.
Guess I was more tired than I thought! :D
Tonight I will breathe, like a yoga genius. :D
I'll give that a go.

A nice relaxing bath just before bed is perfect to let your body wind down... I know that it's a little girly, but try using lavendar fragranced products. They really do help. If you don't like the smell, then have a look out for some Radox sleep easy bath essence... Its really nice and helps me drift off into a deep sleep! :-)

I don't need to use candles as well do I?

I personally, havenever used candles around a bath. I don't really think the bathroom is the place for them. However if the mood created by candles makes you feel sleepy, then go for it! You will be able to find several different scents of candles, so maybe a lavender one may be good in this case.

Oh yes and while I'm on the topic of insomnia, I've found that a nice warm milky drink seems to send me to dream land. :-)

I could just stay awake until I drop.
That would be interesting.

No, I don't really agree with that. It wrecks your day ahead, which is not good! You need to try everything possible to get a good nights sleep. It sounds a bit daft but have you ever considered playing an instrumental cd before bed? My counsellor recommended it, but I didn't try it because I felt too daft!

I also wonder whether or not you do any work in your room? (Studying, playing on the computer) because that is supposed to be a tributary to insomnia.

Yep. The PC gets a lot of my time.

Well that could be a problem then. I don't mean to be a spoil sport, but it could really do you good if you came off the pc an hour before you go to bed. Apparently the mind needs this hour to start to wind down, so you could spend this hour having a nice warm bath or something, or even reading a book :-)

While we're on the subject of insomnia, I had a really bad night's sleep last night. I didn't go to bed until 2, but I couldn't sleep until about 6am.

Is there any relationship between alcohol and insomnia? Last night I went out and had about 4 pints, between 8:30 and 11. I didn't really feel very drunk, just a little light headed. I went back to a mates house, and I got home at about 1. I watched a bit of TV then went to bed. Can anyone explain why I slept so badly?

I'm sorry but I can't help on this one! Alcohol seems to have the opposite affect on me, I get really sleepy after I've had it! (I don't have much mind, that is probably why)

apparently, alcohol is supposed to disrupt sleep patterns - explains why i wake up really early in the morning when i've had too much to drink (and get to experience the whole hangover :( ). some alcoholic drinks make you sleepier, though, in smallish amounts - the hops in beer are a natural sedative. excellent excuse...

Get married...as one of your solutions to sleep lol....
I won't comment any further

I always thought I was an insomniac before I saw this show on TV which explained that some of us are Owls and some of us are Larks.
I realise that I am an Owl [late nighter] so when I cant go to sleep, I don't. As djadam said, I just do the energizer bunny routine. In about three days I am usually so tired that I fall asleep at 8pm!
Alternatively, you could try a change of scene. Sleep at your sister's house or your mom's [given that there are no screaming sprogs]
or you can get married, drink cola, watch tv..........

I've always found that if I've been drinking more than a few pints then I wake up early - becomes a bit of a pain sometimes :(

Personally I don't usually have much problem sleeping as I'm stoned when I go to bed - not that I'm suggesting you take up smoking so you can get to sleep :P

Ugh I know all about insomnia. Hence the weird times I post here.

Nothing works for me so I've given up trying!

I suffer from insomnia regularly (stress related)- if I have 2 bad nights then I go into 'manic mode' and get really jittery and anxious and the problem gets worse - it's horrible. I find if I can relax in the day for a hour or so (not necessarily sleeping) then I start to slow down and am more likely to sleep that night. Also try not to watch the clock when you are trying to get to sleep as this just makes you more anxious about not sleeping. If it carries on I would go to the doctor and get some advice- the occasional sleeping pill just to break the cycle can really help (though natural remidies can help and I would much rather use those- I haven't needed a sleeping pill for about 3 months now- so in my experience I've not found them addictive).

good luck!

I am a regular sufferer. The sleep I do have is often uncomfortable.

For some reason and I don't know why this is but I seem to sleep very well when there is heavy rain or a thunderstorm.

I sometimes can't get to sleep, or wake up in the early hours and can't go back to sleep.
This usually happens what there is something I can't get out of my mind e.g. a lot of work to do the next day.
I have a method which works for me, without resorting to drugs, hebal methods or any other daft idea, and here it is.

1. Make sure the room is very dark and that your head wont turn when you relax your neck muscles.
2. Close your eyes and notice that even though the room is dark there are very faint pastel colours just visible. I know this sounds odd but it's true. Pehaps it's the result of random brain waves in the part that is used for vision.
3. concentrate on these faint colours and they become more vivid. If you find you are thinking of anything else, stop and start again.
4. When you can see the colours look at the outline of them and you will see them change shape and sometimes waves of colour come in from the side.
5. When you get good at this method of relaxation you can make the colours you want to see. It's a wonderful sight.
6. The next thing is, you wake up and you've had a good nights sleep.

I know it sounds daft but it works for me and it doesn't require anything other than effort.

Insomnia? I lie awake at night worrying I might get that!!.

Seriously have you tried mad rampant sex - that seems to do the trick. Although dropping off before orgasm might get you in to more trouble!

I have suffered from insomnia for as long as I can remember. Don't like the idea of sleeping tablets as they make me feel very drowsy the next day. My sleeping patteren is a bit more stable as I work full time now, but I still have about 3 nights a week of little or no sleep. I've just learned to live with it.

I've tried mrchinnery's idea a lot in the past and it does work sometimes. The problem I have is trying to stop thinking. As I try different relaxation methods, i find that my mind will wander off and start thinking about stuff. Before I know it, I have a load of stuff in my head that needs my attention. It's a bit like having someone in the room who won't stop speaking to me and asking questions that need answering.

Drinking certainly doesn't help you to sleep as it's a stimulant as is tea and coffee. I have heard that lettuce is a natural sedative. Lavender oil has been mentioned. A warm bath with Clary Sage essential oil in - only 3 drops does the trick but DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL when using this oil. Reading a novel. Listening to a story on the radio is relaxing ( you could buy a spoken word book). Watching TV in bed is a no-no. Keep the room well ventilated.

I think that's about it:gag:

I've always been useless at sleeping at night, I can be nearly asleep all evening but as soon as I go to bed that's it - I'm awake. I think it all comes from having an active mind, I have a creative job so I just tend to lie there thinking about design ideas and can't get them out of my head for hours.

Alcohol is the only method I've found to fully put me to sleep, a bottle and half of wine normally does the job. If I have about 4 pints it's a disaster, fidgity, irritable, not good.

Considering staying up to watch the American election tonight, not sure this will make me over useful tomorrow though (and if Bush wins I'll certainly have nightmares)!

I like the sound of this looking at pastel shapes, I'll give that a go!

I managed to get about 4 hours sleep last night. I just don't seem to be able to drift off...

I think it was the change in the weather.

(I can't get used to that new map!)

Try eating foods high in Melatonin (commonly known as the dream hormone):

- Milk (incl. "Night Milk" enriched with extra Melatonin)
- Oats
- Barley
- Ginger
- Sweet Corn
- Bananas
- Tomatoes

If the problem persists you can obtain melatonin pills but the long term medical effects of taking this hormone artificially are unknown.

God, if I eat all that before bed, I'll be up all night running to the loo.

Perhaps I should have specified more explicitly to eat one or two of the foods rich in melatonin not the lot!

I reckon I spend a lot of time in my life thinking that I may / or may not have serious problems that require NHS intervention, and every time I am wrong... but one thing that I am absolutely sure about is that I suffer from Insomnia

I mean; I could be in a room full of the most interesting people and my best friends at 8 in the evening, and I would be out like a light...

But come 12 to 3 am and I'm buzzing like a bee.

Well, I knew I was due my quarterly dose of insomnia but this is worse than anything i've experienced before.

I've only dozed since saturday now, i'm not sure how little sleep i've got or how i'm coping but I don't feel that worse for wear, I just feelt a little manky.

Obviously i'm nto sleeping but I'm not eating or digesting properly, i'm still functioning and not even feeling that tired but it's like a burst of static behind every sound and a oily sheen on the back of my eyes.

Anyone ever experince that before? The 'not tired but weathered' insomnia?

I thought I'd found a miracle cure for my insomnia. A prescription drug called Lunesta. It is fantastic & non-narcotic but costs $112 for 30 pills! I've ran out, hence, I'm on line at 2:51 am (mountain time)
