I was made redundant a month ago but was fortunate enough to find another job, what kind of site was it to get closed down?

ants6179 - what did your site do that was wrong?

To be honest, places don't get closed down without at least some reason. Environment? Planning violations?

It's quite possible, of course, that your site was having a bad effect on the lifestyles of those living near it.

I'm not entirely sure what a 'do gooder' is, but I do believe taht there are not enough people doing good.

Sounds like you were a victim of somebody doing bad :(

Joe has it right, the term do gooder applies to someone who does good. I think your aiming a blast at those who interfere for the hell of it?

If someone was going good and your site was closed then maybe it was right so, but you have not said. Good luck finiding a new job.

Sounds like this chap would prefer more 'turn-a-blind-eye' types.

Well, it must still be upsetting when this sort of thing happens regardless of the circumstances, and if it seems that people have interfered then it must feel ten times worse.

So, regardless of what happened and why (that's another discussion ;)) I hope things work out for you soon ants6179

It's interesting....as I was wandering around doing my shopping just now I realised that it is, of course, possible, for folks doing good to impact on me in a less good way.

Some years ago I had a contract with a large US Corporation here in the UK. We were all replaced after 6 months (not a surprise, it had been on the cards) by a group of Indian contractors who would 'telework' from the sub-continent to the UK. Apparently this was part of a deal struck between the Indian Government and various US corporations after the Bhopal accident in the 1980s - send them less dangerous work! Obviously, a desirable state of affairs.

So...a good thing had a less than good impact on my contract, and has probably had a less good impact on other people's jobs in the service sector over here since the 1980s.

I guess that sometimes the 'greatest good for the greatest number' rule applies and we find ourselves on the wrong side of it. I hope it all pans out OK for you and yours.

There is an important distinction here between 'doing good' by intention and 'doing good' through pursuit of personal interest. In practice, the two are often intermingled and it is often difficult to disentangle the various motives for our actions.

Take Profumo for example - he undoubtedly did a lot of good following his downfall, but this was probably precipitated by the motive to rehabilitate himself - a selfish motive. Other 'do gooders' may also be primarily motivated by non-monetary rewards of various kinds (and in some cases even monetary ones).

In my opinion, modern market capitalism is probably the greatest generator of wealth and of human life chances and therefore overall the greatest generator of 'good' in a material sense. But it comes about through pursuit of personal self-interest, not through the primary motive of 'doing good'. As Adam Smith, and many other great economists, such as F.A.Hayek, have noted, the pursuit of self interest within a market economy has positive side effects on society as a whole, because such activity creates wealth, opportunities, goods and services which are beneficial to others as well as to the self interested individuals themselves.

Yeah, I spotted someone helping an old lady across the street earlier, so i ran over and pushed them both under a bus. That'll teach him to 'do good' won't it (well, it won't, he's squashed flat now), but if anyone else was thinking of helping people, let that be a lesson to you, someone will push you under a bus for it. :suspect: :help:

Noooooooooo. I have to find them and do them over as well, maybe just a little leg braking (otherwise more bus drivers will get traumatised).

It has a nice ring to it though Waffer.;)
'Tunnel-visioned, socially irritating meddlers' sounds good too.

'Do-gooders', aren't necessarily the same thing as 'Good-doers'
