Where is the cheapest place to buy a new EXTERNAL hard drive 40 or 60 GB.

Ebuyer are pretty cheap for external hard drives, they do an 80gb one for £56 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=17538768063&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=62839) but it requires an external power supply. They also do a usb powered one, its only 40gb and costs £60 (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=17538768063&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=96995) but thats the price you pay for a smaller unit and it being usb powered so you dont need to lug a big hefty power supply around with you.

Other than that, theres always quite a few, new on ebay that are reasonable.

Cheaper but may not be cost effective in the long run. Many ready-made USB drives have a three year warranty, whereas seperate components won't.

There are also far too many cheap caddies around which are built very poorly or the USB 'drops off' for no reason in the middle of use.

Thats right, but some are quite good, i'd recommend a Canyon (http://www.canyon-tech.com/) caddy or drive, if you can get hold of one, relatively cheap price wise, but the build quality is very good.

Thanks everyone for your feedback think i will go for the 40 GB one on Ebuyer at £60 seems simply a plug in job. I only have USB 1 but says it is compatable. If any of you see it being a problem for me please let me no. I will prob. order it Monday if i don't get any feedback saying i will have problems.

The only problem you will have is the transfer speed, with USB1 it will be very slow, you might want to think about buying a USB2 card to put in your computer, and give you some USB2 ports.

and i'm just a little surprised that the extra 120 gig (ie, quadruple the ebuyer one...) from amazon isn't worth £10.

when it comes to disk space, dont just get what you think you need now. this external disk will still work perfectly well as a backup device in maybe 3 or 4 years time.

and its £65 from ebay once you add delivery... :)

edit: altho if you do go for it, check its usb1 compatible, or get a usb2 card.

The Amazon one is based on a 3.5" desktop hard disk, whereas the ebuyer one is based on a 2.5" laptop hard disk. The difference is that the 3.5" drive needs an external power supply, whereas the 2.5" one takes power just from the USB port.

If you need the extra space, and don't mind having to cart around a much bigger enclosure plus a weighty power supply, then the Amazon one might be for you. If you don't need the space and you want better portability, then go for a 2.5" based one.

hillsborough have sold out but will post it for free. (as they will if you buy it on't net). you can get £3 off if you sign up for the newsletter online, or £7 off if you spend over £100, which i did by buying 50 cd-rs, which are buy 1 get 1 free for £14.99.

so it was £97.98 for the 250gb external drive and 100 cd-rs. which i think is reasonable :)

I think Aldi have some 250Gb drives in on Thursday for £99. Comes with a 3 years warranty and generally have a Western Digital drive inside.
