View Full Version : Sheffield TV coverage: Look North vs Calendar
Ok, so I am super paranoid and have inherited my long established Sheffield born family's slightly negative opinion of Leeds but...
Is the lovely Harry actually beginning to sneer when he has to mention a Sheffield story or is it all in my imagination? :suspect:
Everyone I talk to agrees about the difference of Sheffield coverage between Look North and Calendar but are things getting worse?
No, it's always been like that.
faynoway 24-03-2006, 21:52 yes i agree. Look North should be called Look Leeds
bjshooter 24-03-2006, 22:03 Absolutely correct I never watch it anymore, always watch calander now at least they atempt, to show news from other places.
It isn't just the news the weather often misses us out as well, like we are some kind of strange embarressment to Yorkshire:hihi: :loopy:
I find it quite amusing that Yorkshires second city gets so much coverage on Look L**ds & Calendar... Afterall, the majority of their silly accented folk can't afford a TV licence.
JayneRay 25-03-2006, 14:25 Totally agree Calendar covers a more widespread community and it does not concentrate as much on rugby.
WednesdayMad 25-03-2006, 20:42 At least Calendar has made an effort with its Calendar South bulletins over the last few years despite the continued emphasis on West Yorkshire and Leeds especially by presenters such as John Shires.
BBC Look North is such a Leeds orientated concern it is unbelievable and the way that Harry Gration insists on concentrating on Rugby League is a disgrace and shows what an M62 bias attitude he has.
bigflesh 26-03-2006, 00:44 look leeds has actually improved. i do feel they are listenin to the cries of the underdog - sheffield. for starters, they have recently introduced roadshows - first one was meadowhall (i think to bridge the gap) and secondly, I have noted the stories more sheffield, with sheffield stories being presented over leeds. as a regular grump when it came to "looknorth", i actually feel they have turned a corner........ trick is - keeping it up, sustainability. but isnt it always? lets not kill the regular tales of 2 cities. look north, i do hope your PR team are looking at this. imo your subtle but yet new approach works for me.
craigmason 26-03-2006, 07:55 I feel sorry for the people who live in lincolnshire and north norfolk who have to watch it as its their news station also when did you last hear a news story for them ?.
Why can we in the south yorkshire area not have our own news programme it not as if they would have to invest in new studios to broadcast from as they both have them in sheffield already
caramac55 26-03-2006, 09:36 I always preffered calender when I lived in Sheffield, Look North always seemed too formal.:|

Both these areas have an opt out section of Look north and calendar from Hull and is broadcast on the Belmont transmitter
Guderian 26-03-2006, 11:35 I think they are both garbage.
If I wanted to see a story about a cat stuck up a tree in Wakefield, then I would watch them.
A little off topic but does anyone remember YTV's Christmas line on Leeds 448199?!!
http://www.tv-ark.org.uk/
Click itv, then yorkshire, then continuity then page down to see it. Brings back memories. You can also see clips of how calendar used to be.
PS the said Christmas line would be a premium rate number nowadays!
WednesdayMad 26-03-2006, 13:57 Do you remember the awful Enterprise TV show on Yorkshire each year where local businesses were awarded?
cloudybay 26-03-2006, 14:35 I think they are both garbage.

They only resort to the cat up tree reporting when there haven't been any chip pan fires or knicker thieves in action. Look Leeds is slightly less patronising than Calendar, but only just. Local news, both on tv and radio, leaves a lot to be desired, unless you're under 10 or over 80............ ' 6 year old rescues pensioner's budgie from washing machine '................yawn...........:hihi:

Damn you I will have the jingle in my head all day now (and that's without resorting to visiting TV Ark)
mickb1234 26-03-2006, 20:02 calendar is better as it has calendar south just for south yorkshire but it only goes on from quarter past to twenty past 6
i honestly think there's not much between them, however, look north have christ ackroyd, so i usually end up watching calendar.
NEKRO138 27-03-2006, 14:17 I think Calendar is slightly better, but not much. And the newsreader Calendar has, you know the one who looks like an owl with glass eyes? He scares me.
You've got to give the BBC some credit, their equal opportunities policy is clearly working - I mean they now even employ cans of tango! (Christa).
They mentioned the Blades winning on this lunchtimes' bulletin, but the tango lady seemed to be laughing as she read her autocue!
Miooowwww!
Although I have to agree, I actually saw her in the flesh once and the 'tan' is even more striking in person!
SpeedwayDan 27-03-2006, 21:07 yes, her tan does make david dickinson look like dracula, although i do find something strangely attractive about her, but maybe im just weird.
I don't know what to say to that, I think I just felt physically sick! :gag:
Why does 'LookNorth' always manage to contain a story from Harrogate or Buxton? Is it because that's where all the rich Yorkshire folk live?
