View Full Version : Where to go for lunch in the city centre?
Quick question - where do you like to go for lunch?
Personally, if I'm getting somthing to eat in the office, I'll go to Deli-France on Chappel Walk for a baguette. If I've got a bit more time, I might go to the cafe in the Millennium Galleries.
Where do Sheffield Forumers like to go??
DaBouncer 12-05-2003, 07:27 PM Coffee Revolution
The Grapes for a game o' pool on Friday's
The Fountain Bar
Hog's Head
Peace Gardens on a nice day
McD's on the high street
I sometimes go to McDs, but I often go there for breakfast before work, and think twice in one day would be too much
definatly ;)
(tho i admit to going there 3 times in a day tho ;), not in sheffield mind)
other than McD's i get a sandwich from M&S and eat it on the benchs at cathedral tram stop
I think what Sheffield needs is a KFC that's a bit more central than the one we've got at the moment.
By central, I mean next door to my work.
RPG, I find the boots meal deal better value than M&S and it's ever so slightly closer to the Cathedral tram stop...
Pollards for the best coffee and no piped music.

but they dont do "Just Chicken" on brown :)
They do chicken, stuffing and mayo on brown though. Yum!
i dont like mayo, never have done ;)
DaBouncer 12-05-2003, 08:43 PM Now come on you BOTH know the best place for lunchtime eats is either Deli-Shuss or Double Dutch in Orchard Square.
Deli-Shuss: stilton n bacon on granary with salad!
Double Dutch: Cheese n Onion Wrap!
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Who'd argue with a Bouncer?
I used to work on West Street and I usually went to Deli-Shuss up there for lunch. I'd forgotten how nice their stilton and bacon sarnies are. Guess where I'm going tomorrow?

There's a girl at work like you. She doesn't like mayo or salad, but she still buys cheese, mayo and salad sarnies, then spends most of her lunch hour disecting them to remove the mayo and salad

Loadsa people... thats why places need em!
Leave some o' Bacon n Stilton for me dude!
*Twinkle* 15-05-2003, 04:56 PM When I'm out shopping, I usually just grab a bar of chocolate or a packet of crisps to munch on the go. If I'm tired I'll probably get some fries at McD's and put my feet up for a while :D
Boots meal deal is good too! £2.65 for a sandwich, packet of crisps and a drink. I got a huge sandwich that was priced at £2.60 and the crisps and drink worked out at just 5p! Pretty good eh?

I don't think £2.60 for a sandwich is very good value. Considering how little they cost to produce. What filling was the sandwich anyway?

Can't say I am to impressed with the Pool table at the Grapes though.
Fountain bar, now there is a blast from the past. Not been there since I was 19.
Sidla 15-05-2003, 05:16 PM I sometimes get a sandwich from Somerfield and eat them in the peace gardens.
*Twinkle* 15-05-2003, 05:51 PM Hey Lickszz,
If I remember rightly it was a blt one :-)
3 x huge sandwiches. V.filling!

Of course!
There's a new shop I've found, on Orchard Street (behind Orchard Square) called QCs which sells Bagels.
I'm addicted - been there for lunch every day this week :D
halevan 22-08-2003, 07:39 PM We sometimes go to Atkinsons at the bottom of the Moor and it is good value, also there is a non smoking area which suits us
kittykat 22-08-2003, 10:25 PM All sandwiches pale into INSIGNIFICANCE when compared to Marks & Spencers large range. They are SANDWICH RETAILER OF THE YEAR and certainly deserve to be! The only thing they lack are baguettes but their various delicious wrap thingies are very nice indeed and have fillings you probably wouldnt even think of trying.
emma_uk 23-08-2003, 03:14 AM I love Marks and Spencers sandwiches... there's so much choice!! But sometimes I get bored of sandwiches. I hate the big American multinationals so I don't go to them. Sandwich sandwich on Chapel Walk do some great sandwiches too. Also if I'm in M&S and don't want a sandwich they do some great ready made salads too! What more could you ask for?!
Emma
DaBouncer 23-08-2003, 11:25 AM Since I'm (going back) on the Atkins Diet, it looks like I'll have to supply my own lunch. I don't know ANY place that caters for Atkins Specific. I can however buy a chicken breast from Somerfield (opposite peace gardens) and a salad from Deli-Shuss.
:D
aliali 23-08-2003, 06:03 PM have you ever tried Cafe Malibu on London Road. They have wicked piri piri on baguettes. Good all they breakfast too.
robgj 28-08-2003, 10:43 PM Blue Moon Cafe by the cathedral for a huge veggie plate, the best value money for sandwiches is the one in Orchard Square, and Sheffield's finally got a Subway (Devonshire Street). Now we're truly the best city in the world...

DaBouncer 29-08-2003, 12:39 PM I'm on atkins damn it.. no chips, bread, potatoes, or carbs of anykind!
But I can have fried egg, bacon, sausage, steak, chicken etc!
Andy C 29-08-2003, 09:17 PM Well I work in Derby so no one will be interested in where I go for lunch.......
However Double Dutch pancake bar in Orchard Square do some very nice smoothies and shakes..... they work wonders on a hang over!
Phanerothyme 17-11-2003, 03:06 PM Anyone know of nice city centre restaurant that has quick unobtrusive service and a pleasant atmosphere.
Not bothered too much on price, just location and ambience (i.e not frantically busy) - reaosnable food goes without saying right?
Cheers.
hiyabeing 17-11-2003, 03:10 PM Not HaHa Bar then - was there on Friday and they had our order before we got there. Still took them 1.5hrs to serve - and they didn't have all orders right.
I'm sure you'll get loads of positive answers which actually help you.
I put this in a previous thread but it's just as valid for this one:
The one I always go to is Pollards on Charles Street. The coffee's the best because it's their own and ground on the premises, there's no piped music and only 2 smoking booths which I've never seen used by smokers. The food's good too.
There's another one next to the Cathedral which has many more tables but is just as good.
Coffee £1, 3 strengths.
Not strictly a restaurant but they do have a selection of meals.
Phanerothyme 17-11-2003, 03:36 PM Thanks for the pointer Max, much appreciated.
Is it licensed?
What about the one near the Cathedral?
c_datexpress 17-11-2003, 03:49 PM I went into The Priory which is on St James Row (I think) behind Spring Personnel by the Cathedral. It has recently been done out and it was pretty nice. Modern and fresh and the menu looked good. Didn't eat though so can't vouch for the quality of the food.
Other than that the place that used to be Henry's does quick service at lunch time and is quite good.

'fraid not. I forgot that you may want a drink at lunchtime, sorry.
mikey 17-11-2003, 04:21 PM Crucible Cafe always used to be good, not been for a while though.
You could always do lunch in a hotel, like Hilton/Royal Vic/Bristol
or Minstrels - The Granville College place where they train chefs, supposed to be really good quality food.
alchresearch 18-11-2003, 01:13 PM Sheffield really needs a top-floor restaurant where you can get great views of the city while you eat.
Karlt 18-11-2003, 02:42 PM I've always been a fan of the Blue Moon, next to the Cathedral. But you have to be aware the food's all veggie. Nevertheless, this recommendation is brought to you from a carnivore.
Belle 18-11-2003, 03:14 PM It depends what you are looking for
For cheap and cheerful I always recommend Lloyds number 1 at the bottom of Division Street, adjacent to City Hall.
Henry's is quite nice, it might be called the Corner House now, which is behind John Lewis's. Although the service is quite slow but not too bad
The Millenium Galleries cafe is always worth a visit, nice food, nice open vista of the University and people walking past and you can walk by the gallery and see what is on, and then through Winter Garden on way if your route goes that way.
There is a rather sweet old fashioned place on Suffolk Street, underground, just opposite the post boxes at the town hall. I have forgotten its name. Black and white dressed waitresses, a slight 30s feel and the staff are from different countries so you can practice your language skills on them if you like, nice white table clothes and polished glasses and cutlery...
They do a nice buffet lunch for about £5. It is rather impressive
really.

do you mean Maso's? i went to their £5 buffet the other week, it was good value for money.
as mentioned before the Blue moon cafe is great, think the olive garden is supposed to be good to but not actually ever been.
i had tapas at Tequilas at Tiger Works, West St the other day and that was great service, although they seemed to serve garlic mayonaise with everything... maybe thats due to what i chose. i have to say i'd never tried jalapeno jelly before.
venger 06-12-2003, 07:09 PM Italian restaurant of which the name escapes me.
In between Brown Bear and the herbalists near winter garden.
looks and smells fantastic, keep meaning to go myself.

Amen to that. I've been thinking that for a while now. I think such a restaurant would be maaaarvellous!

never been, but it does look nice.
Jayne 09-12-2003, 04:02 PM might be a bit far out of town but flying pizza does pizza/pasta + soup and coffee for a fiver every lunchtime. it's really lovely food and lots of choice.
las iguanas at west one is pretty good too - very good 241 cocktails
blue-kat 11-12-2004, 11:36 AM I am looking somewhere nice to take my elderly mum to lunch. any recommendations?
It would need to be pretty central, within easy taxi distance of train station, and ideally somewhere that you can take time over meal, not rush rush rush. Bit of a tall order, this time of year.
thanks very much !

genesiscouch 11-12-2004, 01:33 PM Check out this thread:

As I mentioned there and I will mention again, I think Regent Terrace would be a fantastic choice. Just make sure you phone ahead as they will shut down early in the afternoon if they aren't busy.
Ousetunes 11-12-2004, 03:13 PM As you say, your biggest problem will be with it being the seasonal time of year. I tried to get a bite at Hanrahan's on Thursday and it was packed, so I ended up in The Fulwood inn.
Alas, you want city centre and I presume somewhere a little quieter than your average city boozer?
You don't mention what type of food so here's a selection:
1) Yankees - Ecclesall Road. Pizza and steaks, not sports-TV obsessed like Champs, thus quieter. Cheap enough, pleasant too;
2) Ask - Cambridge Street. Pizzas and pasta. Nice place to share a bottle of wine. Could be busy though. Then there's next door:-
3) RSVP and, across the road 4) LLoyds No 1. Both serve decent food in a pub environment;
4) Forum - Division Street. Normally fairly relaxed in the week. Over the road there's a bistro whose name I forget.
5) Nirmal's - West Street. Possibly the only curry house in town open during the day. Not very cheap;
6) Ha! Ha! overlooking the Peace Gardens. Likely to be very busy.
If you've got transport I'd recommend The Fulwood Inn. Once the lunchtime crowd has gone it's nice and quiet and their Christmas deccies are a must-see.
I wish you luck.
beckyaa 11-12-2004, 03:27 PM If you want somewhere very central, why not try the showroom? Couldn't be much closer to the station. I've never eaten in the cafe, only the bar, but that was good.
http://www.showroom.org.uk/
Or how about the Blue Moon Cafe (St James Street) which does nice vegetarian food.
Antibo's in West One is quite good if you want more restaurant than cafe, but having said that not sure if they are open for lunch!
Have a look at this site
http://www.sheffschefs.co.uk/diral.html
ted97 11-12-2004, 04:30 PM What about macdonalds - the food is reasonable and always fresh and served piping hot
ted
manager of macdonalds plc
Andy C 12-12-2004, 11:58 PM Also near the station is the Old Queens Head pub in the bus station or Rutland Arms pub on Brown Street - both do food, or the Pizza place I forget the name of on Howard Street, where the Harlequin chippy used to be.
Another idea is Tony's fish and chip cafe by Ponds Forge - the fish and chips there are decent.
If you were looking for somewhere a bit smarter or special than any of the above then I think you are going to need to look a bit further away from the station, although of course if you go somewhere up Devonshire Green area you could get a tram to the station.
beckyaa 13-12-2004, 12:25 AM Ruskins is good too, near the Crucible, and the Wig and Pen behind the cathedral is a lovely little place and do great food.
Decisions decisions...
blessed 13-12-2004, 12:01 PM Lions Lair is great for lunch time / evening options
NatalieSheff 13-12-2004, 04:18 PM on eccles rd opposite the berkley centre(pizza hut and mini tesco) there is a little italian restaurant that your mum will adore, very nice food, very classy, waitress was a bit naff though
blue-kat 16-12-2004, 09:19 PM Many thanks to all for the helpful suggestions.
In the end I took my mum for long lunch at the Showroom cafe and it was great.
Lovely food, nice relaxed atmospher and not crowded.
Looking forward to trying the other places in future !

jenhoppy 17-12-2004, 08:08 PM If you want a traditional cafe try the one at the top of flat street.Changed hands recently and its nice and friendly, reasonably priced and the food is traditional stuff, homemade meals. Its now called 'Copleys'.Near to bus/rail station and underneath a car park....ideal eh?
muffy 09-03-2005, 10:10 AM I work down in town and am trying to find some where interesting and relatively healthy for lunch [the all you can eat pizza and chinese is taking its toll]
any one have any suggestions?
gaztat 09-03-2005, 10:14 AM theres a really nice bagel shaop just off west street, just past the cathedral. Reasonallby priced and loads of options!!!
neeeeeeeeeek 09-03-2005, 10:31 AM Blue Moon next to the Cathedral, it does not get any more healthy than that! Also the Priory 3 doors up, excellent food.
feargal 09-03-2005, 10:38 AM Oh, I second neeek's suggestion of the Blue Moon! It's lovely - relatively cheap, healthy, big portions, and delicious cakes and coffees.
MMM MMM!
DanSumption 09-03-2005, 04:47 PM The Olive Garden Vegetarian Cafe, upstairs from Wicker Herbal on the corner of Norfolk Street and Surrey Street, is also very good.
debilde 09-03-2005, 04:54 PM Cafe Uno, on Eccy Road, lovely food. Bit far to walk maybe but you could get Bus for 20p centro!!

Have you visited Crystal on Carver Street I went to the opening night and its a really relaxed atmosphere. The menu seemed reasonable too about £6 for lunch, just a little more than Maci D's. happy tucker!:D

If you get three hours + for lunch I can definitely recommend Crystal.
Though to be fair, we did go on the second week - the service might be a little less lethargic and a little more in tune with the prices by now. The food was pretty good though.
Relish on West Street does fantastic sandwiches.
jaki_fruit 13-03-2005, 05:19 PM go for sushi at wasabisabi on london rd!
Hubert 14-03-2005, 03:03 PM outside of towm woodys on ecclesall road is the nicest sandwich shop around
Kristian 14-03-2005, 03:18 PM I can't believe nobody mentioned O'Briens on Chapel Walk; fabulous sandwiches there!
K x
Norbert 16-03-2005, 10:40 AM Sadly despite being very popular the Olive Garden on Surry St has closed. Nearby in the Winter Gardens is Zoobies take away with some nearby seating. The paninis are good as is the coffee and cakes. The staff are nice and play good music.
If I want to relax in the city centre I go to the Blue Moon and eat and read the papers or there's Cafe 22 on Norfolk Row. You know, on the pedestrian bit between the Crucible and Fargate. They are very nice too.

I definately agree - i live for KFC's - have you tried Nandos? - Bit more classy and a bit more pricey but if your into your chicken i'd definately reccomend it!
Re the 'meal deals' try Deli France on chapel Walk - just down the side of USC its quite expensive but you can ge a meal deal for about £3.40 which you get a drink (hot Chocolate) a baguette (warm Chicken & Bacon mayo with mozz )and a pastry (choc Croissant). Thats my fave choice anyway!!
fagan138 17-03-2005, 11:13 AM TRY THE MASHOUSE ON DEVONSHIRE STREET GREAT BRITISH FOOD. ALSO DO EXCELLENT BREAKFAST. FRIENDLY STAFF AND GREAT SERVICE.
popestar 17-03-2005, 03:57 PM lunch for me is either
fountain bar to lose all my money on the quiz machine (golden boot ggggggggggooooooooooaaaaaaaaaallllllll)
subway on division street (also opening by tkmax on friday the 18th)
somerfield (near the end of month much cheapness)
or deli schuss for the best chinese chicken around
Gerald Haber 15-07-2008, 04:56 PM Around Sheffield there are many very nice pubs that do very good value for money lunches IE Carvery for £5/£6.
When My Wife and I go Shopping in City Center or even Meadowhall, we have not found anywhere that even comes close to Pub Lunches.
Can anyone suggest anywhere?
Thank You
