I wondered if anyone had done a TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) course. I am seriously considering doing one, with a slice of my redundancy money, if I have the credentials to be accepted.

Also, does anyone know the going rate these days for teaching at nightschool?

Any info would be gratefully appreciated.

Not exactly sure but I think Hallam Uni run Tesol courses at Castle college. Could be worth contacting them other than that have a look on their website.

Back from the dead thread!!!

Is this still applicable? I'm pondering the idea of doing some kind of TEFL course and was hoping there was one round here somewhere.

Hallam Uni eh? Might give em a call.

My better half did a TEFL course a couple of years ago - had to go to Newcastle.

And where did TESOL come from - I've always known this as TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) - but even if it were TESOL - what does the 'O' stand for?

TESOL is Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (now you know why it's shortened!).

Could I suggest that you dip your toe in the water with a little bit of volunteer work? Sheffield Association for the Voluntary Teaching of English are a charity which (surprise, surprise) uses volunteer teachers (which they train themselves to OCN level 3) to teach either on a one to one or small group basis.

They ask you to commit to 6 months at an hour a week, but it could be a way in to the field (and also a good reference for acceptance on another TESOL course).

I was a volunteer for a couple of years, and only stopped through ill health.

They're on 241 2765.

Good idea Medusa but 6 months seems an awful long time...

To be honest I'm considering trying to get to Thailand for 6 months / a year and am thinking of sensible ways to earn money while I'm out there, and teaching english seems like the logical choice, so I if I'm going to sort it, it needs to be as quick as so I can pack my bags.

I'm hoping I can teach / work a few days a week so I can spend the rest of the time getting my backside kicked learning Muay Thai.

The TEFL course is only a couple of days if you can find one.
