The lesson was pretty basic and only about 30-40 mins long ... then it was just social dancnig after ...

Plenty of space on the dance floor and the atmosphere was very good ... the place wasn't packed to capacity ... but neither was it deserted ... maybe about 60 - 70 people there I guess.

Was fun though :-)

Hello. I'm one of the people behind this night. I really enjoyed the last one. We have another one on 13th May.........the Fez Club is a wicked little venue as it doesn't have to be rammed to get a good atmosphere. The lessons will be from 10-11 or 9.30 if people turn up then - then the full on dancefloor action continues until 2...........

By all means email me for more info welchiewelch@hotmail.com

Are you the dj for adelante/mas adelante? If so I hope you don't mind some feedback. I'm curious about how you have built your salsa collection - you play some stonking 70's NY salsa at times, but I have to say that at other times some tracks leave the dancers scratching their heads saying what's he playing this for, mainly because it is way too fast or way too slow, or the clave keeps changing and not good tracks to dance to.

Were you playing 2 weeks ago - there was a bit more variety from some of the tracks that get played most weeks - I really enjoyed that night.

I am the guilty DJ. I've built my collection up over some time, the 70's salsa is definitely my favourite but I will be honest and say I don't really view salsa / latin music from the dancer's perspective. I come from a more general dance music / soul perspective.

I deliberately try and mix other styles; reggaeton, hip hop, latin house, latin drum n bass, cumbia, salsa timba, batacada, samba, foro etc in. I know this isn't too everyone's taste but I don't want the night to be like any other salsa night - hence la mezcla ! Also, while I have respect for the dancers too many latin nights become a centre of excellence event and the casual dancer who may not want to take part in lessons etc is put off...I try to get the dancefloor going in a more inclusive way so anyone from your serious salseros thru to your p***ed up peeps who have just stumbled on the night feels comfortable to have a boogie...

The change in tempos is deliberate. I do it in other sets of hip hop, drum n bass, soul etc at Phonetics. I understand if its not too everyone's liking but it's the way I play !

I was playing 2 weeks ago yeah...

When you say variety what do you mean - variety in styles of salsa or general latin music ? What time do you normally leave ? Normally the later it gets the more the variety of the music. As drink quells my fear of the Salsa Taliban (copyright: William the Fastest Venezuelan in Town) !!!!!

Feedback always appreciated mate or mate-ess !!
See yer soon....

I realise that its not a full on 'salsa' night, and that you play for different audiences but wish it could be, but that's because I'm selfish and know what music I like to dance to! I tend to leave at about 1115 - when the pubs empty out - it gets dangerous on the dance floor with ****** people waving pint glasses around and stuff and the last thing I want to happen is my partner getting a glass or elbow in the face - not good! Dancers and pissheads generally aren't compatible. But fair enough - I know the "salsa taliban" don't have a monopoly on the night (interesting turn of phrase - who exactly are you referring to?!!!).

the night I am referring to was before the students came back and actually what I probably meant was that you didn't play much cuban music which I don't dance to much, so not really variety as much music I like.

Do you go to other salsa/latin events?

cheers, keep it up

I have to say that the variety of Welchie's music selection is the main reason I really like the forum... fair enough, it's annoying if all you want to do is dance... but it mixes it up and makes it interesting for everyone concerned and not just for those hardcore few.... (I think this variety is also part of the reason for Adelante's success...)

If you want to go for a pure salsa night then you should really go to Sabroso (Sundays at the interval cafe bar).... or even Son de Sabroso but only the real hardcore go for that... actually, don't think it's been on for a while now....

As for William, c'mon how can you not know him?... he's the whirling dervish whenever that one particular Merengue song comes on... I can't remember the song, but he dances it with a long haired blond woman and they end up spinning like mad! I remember then doing it in the forum once and people applauded at the end.... (Though when they do it at Sabroso, I think people are so used to it that it doesn't get that kind of response anymore.)....... At least that's who he is if we're thinking about the same person... :P

It was william's phrase "salsa taliban". Ok - basically quite a few latinos find the obsession with just the salsa ritmo funny because in Latin America the clubs mix things up and people are listening to hundreds of different styles (not all of them up my street!!!)

William is the whirling Dervish. A fine dancer with too much energy !!! He'll also be playing with me and Mario at the next Mas Adelante.

But bear in mind that in New York a salsa DJ would be shot for playing anything but, and they know a thing or two about music and dancing, those New Yorkers...

I agree that sometimes the Forum gets too packed. But then it is free to get in so the only way round it would be to charge a quid or something.....i'm in two minds whether I want to do that.

You will find more space at Mas Adelante, next thursday 13th May at the Fez Club. £2 entry or free b4 11pm. Its until 2am too.

I won't bother taking up loads of lucrative DJ offers in NYC then :D

I can handle the Salsa Taliban but bullets.............nah.

LOL! Will look forward to mas Adelante.

as a matter of interest, how do the bar takings in there compare for a) a tuesday and b) other types of music nights? If you are at liberty to divulge that kind of information, that is...

Yeah... they get the place packed, which is quite a feat on a Tuesday....

I one popped out for some fresh air, and had a look at Halcyon since a friend's housemate was DJ-ing there, the place was dead... I'd say there were two people in there...

Anyway, speaking from a teacher's point of view, it's doing quite well for us... got to the point where we had to turn people away or the lessons would have been far too packed. (Not sure about it nowadays, actually, since I haven't been for a couple of weeks... been busy)

Although what's annoying is that some people sneak into the lessons without paying... some people stand about with a drink at the bad and then just "slip in".... *grrr*

Finally I would like to say that I'm very proud of Keng San... he's put a lot of work into it and managed to pull it off nicely....
