View Full Version : Sheffield yarn shops?
Lucy-Lastic 22-03-2006, 17:57 So are there any bar John Lewiss? I want to have a look at and feel the yarn before I buy but find Sheffield so depressingly short of real yarn shops:( Ive been buying mainly from the net but you know how sometimes you just need to see before you buy:S

I agree. I'd love to be able to go into a shop which has the same lovely array of yarns as they sell in Get Knitted (http://www.getknitted.com/). Where I live, we don't even have a John Lewis :( .
I know that Get Knitted do an open day on, I think, the first Saturday of each month. They're in Bristol though, so it's a long way to go.
If people could think of any knitting shops in Sheffield and the local area where LisaH and the rest of us can go and fondle some yarn, could they post them here and I'll add them to the sticky 'Recommendations' thread at the top of the page?
I haven't come across any others except the haberdashery department in Atkinsons Department Store on The Moor, theres probably less choice than John Lewis (i've not been in the Sheffield John Lewis yet, only Nottinghams) but they are slightly cheaper.
There is a lovely wool shop in Firth Park - if it's still there!

Can you remember its name? If it's still there, I'll post its details in the 'recommendations' section :) .

Fantastic! Another recruit :D . Ask as many questions as you like, that's what the group's here for.
If you decide to make the scarf too, we could do a knit-along and help eachother out. I won't be starting mine yet, as it looks as I might have to get the yarn for it sent over from America (Get Knitted haven't got the colours I really like in stock), so you've got loads of time to get lots of practice in first.
Forgive me if I'm repeating myself, but make sure to check out the 'Recommended Links' sticky thread at the top of the page. There are recommendations for good books and web sites for beginners. The web sites with the instruction videos are really helpful.
Any questions or problems? Just post them on here :) .
a knit along is a fab idea, altho im not sure when exactly ill be good enough to try doing the scarf. the links are really good i spent hours looking through them yesterday, ive found the very first thing im going to try out tho after my practise is over ... a jumper for Misty   ill post pics of her in it when ive ( *IF* ) i manage it :D

I wonder if it might be a good idea to start a knit along in a few weeks on a small simple-ish pattern, so that any beginners (and anyone else!) can work on it at the same time? That way, if you get stuck, you know there are other people on the forum working on the same thing and who might be able to see what the problem is if you go wrong. Sort of like a practice piece of knitting after you've mastered the basics?
Maybe I should do a poll to see what people think?
If anyone fancies going slightly further out of Sheffield, then there is a lovely shop in Bakewell that sells wool as well as patchwork material and other crafty things. It's the only local place I know of that sells noro, ggh etc. I think it's called Patchwork direct, although I may be wrong.

Thanks for that recommendation. I've just found the address and phone number; it is called Patchwork Direct. They also have a website where you can order things online. I'm just off to put the information in the sticky 'Recommended Links' thread at the top of the page.
carriewarr 13-05-2006, 14:05 For info, a new wool shop has opened at Hunters Bar Roundabout - Wool Baa I think it was called. Not a huge range of stock, and a focus on higher quality (and therefore price!) wools - e.g., Debbie Bliss and the like. They have an opening offer on of 10% off all yarns - but I didn't register when this ran until.
Cheers, Carrie

Thanks for that Carrie. I wonder if they have a web site I can link to on here? I'll look up the details and post them in the knitting shops section of the 'Recommended Links (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=98114)' thread.
on Abbeydale Rd I noticed a patchwork shop that has started selling 'Katia' yarns and patterns.
Travelling towards town, the shop is situated on left hand side , after the bottom of Carterknowle rd,in the same small group of shops where Carol's dress shop is.
I'm sure that place is called 'Patchwork Garden'
Hi Hecate,
I love the recommended links to knitters' blogs you posted, thank you for that  :)

Thanks for the recommendation, gaye, and to rooty for the name of the shop. I've added Patchwork Garden to the list of Sheffield knitting-related shops in the 'Recommended Knitting Links (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=98114)' section.
And thanks also to carriewarr; I've also just added Wool Baa to the list too :) .

Thank you :) .
I have loads of stuff to add to the blog section, and also to both the 'Recommended Knitting Links (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=98114)' and 'Recommended Crochet Links (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=102536)' sections. I shall try to get the sections updated before next weekend.
Lucy-Lastic 14-05-2006, 15:21 Just wondered - anyone who may have been into the Wool Baa, does it carry stuff that John Lewis doesnt - does it do sock yarns, stuff other than sirdar, Rowan, Debbie Bliss, Jaeger (I find it easy to get to JL but parking on Eccleshall road is pants?
Been to JL today and fondled all the yarn - particularly liked Debbie Bliss silk alpaca mmmmmmmmm  oh and bought half a tonne of pins for blocking:D

Gaye, thank you for the information. I tried to send you a PM to say a quick welcome to the knitting group, but I noticed you're not set up to receive PMs at the minute.
I'll do it here instead then: Welcome to the knitting group! Even though you don't knit so much these days, it would be great if you could be involved in the group. I know I'd appreciate the advice of someone with more knitting experience than I have :) .
Lucy-Lastic 16-05-2006, 20:46 Oooh just noticed this (http://forum.angelyarns.com/viewtopic.php?t=5021) on a different forum talking about the Wool Baa - maybe I should take some time for a visit:D

Hello again, Gaye. I somehow missed this post last week, or I would have replied sooner.
Yes, please do post knitting tips of here; they'd be very welcome. Feel free to start new topics (just click on the 'Start Topic' button in the top right-hand corner of the page), or jump in with any comments you have.
PMs are Private Messages; the way forum members can communicate privately with eachother without using email. I shall test yours out now :) .

I pass 'The Wool Bah' everyday - no website or email on their signage though....
Hi all, it was me who posted about the wool baa on tha Angel Yarns forum. It's a lovely little shop, stocking Colinette, Louisa Harding, Bergere de France, Laines du nord, Noro and Debbie Bliss, along with basic stylecraft yarns. The owner, Jill, is very helpful and last time I was in the shop we chatted about sock yarns and she will soon be stocking opal. It's not the biggest shop in the world, but it's a great place. Jill will be setting up knitting classes soon as well. She doesn't have a website, although there is an e-mail address. I'll have a hunt round and see if I can find it later and then post it.
Now that's fantastic news; a LYS which stocks more than Rowan. And Norro too? Good grief! :) . It really should be compulsory for LYS owners to have knitting classes and workshops too; I look forward to seeing what Jill will have on offer.
AmelieB, if you find the email address I'll post it in the 'Recommended Links' section along with the Wool Baa's entry. I'll also update it to include details of the yarn it stocks.
Wool Baa also runs knitting and crochet workshops for beginners (1 hour and intermediate/advanced (90 minutes) at £8 and £10 respectively with concessionary rates which I think are £4 and £6 respectively.
I've been to a few of the crochet classes and they're really good.
