View Full Version : Welcome to the Sheffield Knitting Group!
I am incredibly pleased to be able to say welcome to the new knitting group, the first group in this new section on Sheffield Forum! Many thanks to Geoff and to the others behind the scenes for making this possible.
I am your point of contact for any questions you might have about the group. Please don't hestate to get in touch via PM if there's anything at all you want to know.
Those I have spoken to via PM and on the forum will have a good idea about what this group will be about, but for newcomers, here's a quick summary of possible subjects we'll be covering:
- Recommendations of shops for knitting supplies; those on the internet and on the high street.
- Where to find the best patterns; free ones and ones to buy.
- Help with any difficulties you might be having with a pattern.
- Suggestions for books, internet resources, blogs, yarns etc.
- Discussion of the things we're working on. Feel free to post links to pictures of works in progress and finished items.
Any other suggestions and contributions will be welcome, so get posting!
Wow, we're the first group, was only wondering the other night when it would be up and running. Can't wait until its all running smoothly and people get posting pictures of their projects! :)

Hello rooty! Great isn't it? I'm sorting out piccies even now :). I'll post a message soon just to make sure that everyone knows how to post links to their photos.
Can't wait to see what you're working on.

Brilliant stuff.
Not working on anything at the moment but building up for great things (hopefully).
Glad there is somewhere I can come when panic sets in.....
Ok, here we go!
A good place for anything knitting or wool craft related is Wingham wool works (http://www.winghamwoolwork.co.uk/)
If you want to introduce children to knitting Then this (http://www.myriadonline.co.uk/dummy-book1.html) is a good place for products too.
Happy shopping

Thanks for those links, Titian. I'll add the shop to the recommended list in the sticky at the top of the page too.
I've used Wingham Woolwork. My subscription for Interweave Knits was from there. They're very good value and do a speedy postal service.

I do love the 'Rogue' pattern. I was thinking about making it a while back and then got side-tracked by the lure of sock-making :) . I'm sure I've come across a modification of that pattern that gives it a zip up the front; I'm not sure which one I'd prefer. I can't remember if it was from the same site though. I'll have to have a look around and see if I can find it again.
I think I'll post a link to the 'Rogue' pattern in the sticky of 'Recommended Links'. There's a section for free patterns, but I haven't set up a section for bought patterns yet.
What socks are you working on?
Lucy-Lastic 22-03-2006, 17:08 Just the free pattern from Web of Wool in socka safari Yucatan http://www.webofwool.co.uk/socka/mexicosafari.html Im new to sock making but the potamus ones you have done look brilliant - were they hard to do:D

Hi can any one join your group? I would love to try knitting I crochet a bit but the idea of a group sounds great, when and where do you meet?

Hi Wifey. Of course anyone can join the group :) . Just jump in and post a message, or start a new thread. Let us know what you'd like to do, and someone will be able to help you out.
This is a 'virtual' group, though; we don't meet up (well, not yet anyway). I replied to your message in the 'Stitch n Bitch' thread about the Sheffield Stitch n Bitch group, which meets up in the city centre. Details are in the 'Recommended Links' thread. Let me know if you start going to those meetings.
I'm really interested in joining, could you give me more details please

Hello wifey. I've sent you a PM with some information about the group :) .
JayneRay 22-04-2006, 23:20 Hi please help just been looking on a web site I think from spelling it is American. Can anyone tell me what worsted and sport weight wool translates as thanks

Here (http://www.yarnstandards.com/weight.html) is a good web site which has a table giving information about the American system of yarn weight classification. It has the figures for stitches per inch (well, per four inches, but it's easy enough to convert), and also the recommended needle size.
To answer your question, Debbie Stoller in her 'Stitch n Bitch' book states that sport weight yarn is equivalent to DK (double knitting), and worsted is equivalent to Aran weight. It's always best to check the exact stitches per inch figure, if you're going to be comparing and substituting yarns, because even within one category (eg DK), the yarns can vary slightly.

Hi Hecate,
Can you send me some information as well please? I'd like to join this group too. Thanks.

Hi Bami, and welcome to the knitting group  .
You don't have to 'join' the group as such; it's open to anyone and everyone who's registered on Sheffield Forum and who has an interest in knitting, crochet, spinning etc. Just by reading the threads, and posting a message you're automatically a member.
We don't meet up in 'real life' as yet - we're an online group who meet on here to discuss what we're working on, exchange ideas and the like.
Feel free to jump in and start new topics whenever you like :) .
What are you working on?
Hi Bami, and welcome to the knitting group  .
<...>:) .
What are you working on?
Hi Hecate,
Thanks for your welcome. Nice group this is. At the moment I'd like to do two things. On a carboot I bought blue wool I want to knit a cardigan from and I also just bought a second hand knitting machine (old) and i'd like to learn how to use it.
For the cardigan i am looking around for nice and easy stitches to use and an easy pattern. For the machine I think I will do the same course as Fireguard37. So, enough to do for the coming winter months :) .
If you want any help finding a cardi pattern, just us know what sort of wool it is and someone might be able to suggest a suitable pattern or point you in the right direction for where to look.
Are you an experienced knitter or a beginner?

It's 'English Maid' Aran Knitting (25% wool) for 4.5 needle, plain blue. I think I'm between beginner and experienced - years ago I knitted for my then little sons and myself sweaters but they were mainly simple and only in knit & purl.
I'm looking for a site with different kntting stitches and photos. Thought that would be nice to try. Does anyone know a good site?
