Bradfields my favourite place in the whole world, I walk there often. Greybeard lives in Bradfield but not sure if he is an original or not. only_me 21-03-2006, 08:30 PM I once lived at bradfield for a short time' a place called thornseat lodge. Sadly the place is now in disrepair but i feel lucky to have lived in such a beautiful place. The views from the lodge were really good especially when it snowed. Then there was bradfield village' everyone seemed to gather in the local pub and sing along to folk music' even the village bobby' great times. Greybeard 21-03-2006, 10:01 PM Greybeard lives in Bradfield but not sure if he is an original or not. Afraid not - only been here for six years and not in the village but a good mile outside. Woke up to a covering of snow again this morning :D PopT 22-03-2006, 06:09 AM My favourite place around Sheffield, Bradfield. I was there last Christmas and the village views were exceptional, covered in a dusting of snow. The Bradfield Brewery is turning out some good beer also. Have a pint for me if you are in the area, just to see if it still tastes as good. Happy Days! PaulTansley 22-03-2006, 11:31 AM My favourite place around Sheffield, Bradfield. I was a choirgirl at High Bradfield Church, and was raised on a farm. Those were magical days. The trouble is they don't last. When you walked to the farm next door you could see all three dams. Dale Dyke, Ewden and Dam Flask. In the woods we could pick bluebells. We could drink milk straight from the cows. RoyalRegular 22-03-2006, 12:02 PM I loved growing up in Bradfield. PaulTansley 22-03-2006, 05:34 PM Just got back from Agden having walked round the whole res. 60 Whooping swans have landed on there way to the arctic, fabulous site. Bellasdad 23-03-2006, 12:20 AM My Grandparents (Merriman) ran the farm (Thomson House Farm?) that borders Dale Dike Reservoir, from the 30's to the Early 70's, and continued to live in a farm house there in retirement. My Uncle (Deakin) was the dam keeper, and still lives in the dam keepers house. What was Thornseat Lodge? My grandfather took a retirement job there, I believe. Going OT a bit here, but if you're into birds, (of the feathered variety) I had a report today that Red Kites have been spotted in the Strines area. Something to look out for when you're out that way. only_me 23-03-2006, 08:51 AM My Grandparents (Merriman) ran the farm (Thomson House Farm?) that borders Dale Dike Reservoir, from the 30's to the Early 70's, and continued to live in a farm house there in retirement. Thornseat lodge was a childrens home' i was there in the 70's it may have closed in the 80's ???????? dragonlady5 23-03-2006, 12:57 PM I can remember the winter that brought all the power lines down and the snow was so heavy we had to walk on the top of walls. It was also the first time I had seen the Northern Lights dancing around the sky. It was such a fascinating thing to have seen. We could'nt go to school because the power lines were on the floor across the way out from the farm. I never did like the winters. jumpingjonny 23-03-2006, 01:00 PM I also went to Low Bradfield School from 1958 untill we moved to Loxley in 1962 and my fondest memory of my school days at Bradfield was getting the slipper off Fanny Wilkes! I also attended Bradfield and mimed in the school choir in the Tenor section along with a certain Keith Goodison (better than lessons!) The junior school closed many years ago with chidren now shipped to Dungworth due to lack of local pupils. The site is now being converted to a coffee/craft shop but seems to have ground to a halt. dragonlady5 23-03-2006, 01:08 PM Mrs Wilkes was my head as well. I really liked her. The thing I hated most was the milk we had to drink, I cringe as I remember. It was horrible. And the puddings that had rhubarb or prunes in and the semolina puddings. Uggg!! jumpingjonny 23-03-2006, 01:26 PM Hi Brenda (alias Draggonlady 5) At the risk of putting Friends Reunited out of business, I thought i'd say a bit of an hello. Don't get me started on Bradfield School otherwise we'll be here all day! All the best JE dragonlady5 24-03-2006, 01:22 PM Hi Jumpingjonny, Got your message. What about the school, what was wrong with it? I loved my school days, wish I could turn back time. bazjea 24-03-2006, 10:37 PM Brewery, what brewery, can't say I have ever seen that. Where is it. Regards the Bradfield Brewery. If you are coming from Sheffield up Loxley Rd. When you get to the start of Bradfield Reservoir continue straight forward toward High Bradfield the brewery is about 200 yards before entering High Bradfield Village,on the left hand side of the road. Ally68 24-03-2006, 10:45 PM Bradfield is lovely. The place holds many special memories for me. Happy days! PopT 27-03-2006, 07:20 AM Cycleracer The best directions to get to the brewery as I can remember are:- Leaving the Horns Pub at High Bradfield proceed towards Sheffield on the top road. The brewery is on a farm to the right of this road down a private lane. You can see the farm clearly and a great new barn type building which ids in fact the brewery. It is nearly opposite the cottages next to the old Castle Hill. There are no signs indicating a brewery but be assured it is there and the different brews they produce are excellent. They have only been brewing for around a year but it is quality stuff. Funnily enough the last time I was in Sheffield you could buy it at the Riverside pub on Harvest Lane in Sheffield but not in Bradfield itself. There is a website for the Bradfield Brewery if you want to look it up. Good Supping, wish I could join you. Ive been going there since I was five. we used to stay in wilkin hill cottage for many years but still visit regularly. I spoke with the famers at woodseats farm and they say that a contractor owns them. These Buildings must be protected? Bye for now Jay only_me 08-10-2007, 11:42 PM Hi Jay, do a search "Strines Road Murders" there is some info that may intrest you. Minimo 09-10-2007, 05:39 PM I recall seeing on the path to St Nicholas Church there is a gravestone with the inscription `sacred to the memory of ... (can`t remember the name) who died` There is no more so it`s intriguing to wonder why the inscription is incomplete I certainly hope everyone buried there died! responderman 10-10-2007, 12:55 AM Hi Jay, do a search "Strines Road Murders" there is some info that may intrest you. Hello "only me" Yes that is interesting, local gossip seems to favour the named owners. not sure where to go from here but I think if i draw attention to the problem at Sheffield city hall it may rattle a few cages and get these properties sorted out. Thanks for the prompt, But why do these lovely properties attract such morbid tales? TTFN Jay speeder 22-10-2007, 12:38 PM Used to go to Woodseat Farm in the early 80's, Went to school with the eldest lad there, Are they Geordies still? Thornseat was still open until 83-84ish, remember quite a few names from the area, went to school with among others, Robinson, Merriman, Simmons, Oakes, and a girl called Rachel? who lived in the caretakers house? at Thornseat, picked many great mushrooms on the hill behind Wilkin Hill centre. Thornseat lodge and Wilkin hill cottage are to be investigated by an official organisation, why these properties have been allowed to get in this state by thier owners. My friends the Marsdens (they lived at Burnside, Low Bradfield 1969-1998 ) used to say that electricity must be delivered to Bradfield by lorry, because whenever snow closed the roads the lights went out :D:D ;) ccclarke 18-11-2008, 05:59 PM I lived at Thornseat Lodge in 1940(approx)until the age of 3, when I was sent to the Fulwood Cottage Homes to join my 3 brothers. I too, remember the "Lodge" as being a much happier place than the Fulwood Cottage Homes. i would be interested to know if it is at all possible to find out the exact dates of my stay and departure from Thornseat Lodge. I now live in Canada and spend my retirement in trying to trace my family tree. You are viewing an archive. To view the actual thread click here: Sheffield Forum | |
