View Full Version : School Telly
When ar was a lad! back in t' 80's the schools used to have special TV programmes, supposedly educational drama's which we used to watch weekly.
They were always taped off the telly and were almost always scary & spooky ones. A show called 'Words & Pictures' with a small floating blob that was covered in squares called Wordy used to introduce cliff-hanger drama's like:
Dark Towers ( this was my fave )
The boy from space.
Interference - very spooky!
We all used to look forward to the following week to see what happens! does anyone else remember these?
Dark Towers RULED! I used to have the accompanying book to the series years ago.... The boy from Space also ruled!
Ah the memories, harks back to a day when the BBC could actually do GOOD educational TV, none of this lame Teletubbies/Tweenies/Balamory mush kids are subjected to nowadays...
Back in the 80s there were other CLASS kids programmes as well, Trumpton anyone?! Fingermouse?! Pigeon Street?! I could go on for hours!
jackthedog 16-04-2004, 10:32 Seems like I'm abit younger than you guys.
We sat through an entire series of 'Geordie Racer' at primary school. It was about pidgeon racing. Cant for the life of me think why it was part of BBC schools programming.
I think there was something that had the jingle 'E, Magic E' too. Cant remember what programme that jingle was off.
FairyNormal 16-04-2004, 11:14 I can remember being sat down in the school hall at Hillsborough School in the 70's to watch a really crap schools programme called "Cloudburst". It seemed to go on for months, years even and was so dull I can't remember anything about it at all!!!!
I do remember "You and me"
Me and you, you and me
Lots and lots for us to see
Lots and lots for us to do
You and me, me and you!!
I even have a You and me book!! How very very sad!!
Ah yes, You and Me... Another classic of the ages.
They just don't make programs like that any more :(

The BBC had whole series of stuff like this. Geordie Racer, Through The Dragons Eye, another about birds of prey- basically a dodgy drama fantasy mystery plot that taught you how to spell at the same time.
The "Magic E" was a rhyme by an orange alien robot thing that sang along the lines of:
"Kit, becomes kite with me.
Rid, becomes ride with me.
I'm magic magic E.
Magic Magic E."
You can remember the melody on its own i'm sure. :D
Fantastic TV actually.
Chris.
JamesRich 16-04-2004, 13:10 What about Geordie Racer and Badger Girl. Anyone remember them? This was probably about mid eighties.

I'd forgot Badgergirl was the other one! We sat through that one too...
JamesRich 16-04-2004, 13:19 Did badgergirl have bright ginger hair and was the story line about the "Beast of Bodmin"?
I can't quite remember.

Yeah, I thought spuggie was in Byker Grove too. She had ginger curly hair.
And also, thanks for reminding me about stotties! I remember we made them in cookery as a result of that programme. They were horrible, biscuity breadcakes!
JamesRich 16-04-2004, 13:43 One of the girls who used to be in Byker Grover (I think her name was Donna) worked in Schuh on the Moor about 2 years ago.

I loved it. When i was unemployed a few years ago it was repeated and its just as good now we're older. :)
Chris.
noseyrosie 16-04-2004, 16:44 Woweee!! We watched tons of these progs, unfortunately, the dramas were so...err...engaging and well produced, that everytime Wordy and his word wall came up I used to fall asleep and miss the rest.
We watched:
Geordie Racer (didn't the boy's older sister take part in the Great North Run? She was called Rita or something. And the dad was that guy out of the cop drama...there are only about 3 geordie actors on the scene anyway aren't there?)
Fairground (it's not on that webaite, but it was great, these gypsies moved to town and...stuff happened. Anyway here's the theme song as I remember it:
Flying high, flying fast
Touch the sky rushing past
Remember as you whirl around
Fortunes can be lost and found
Fair's fair on the fairground,
Fair's fair on the fairground!
Also watched Dark Towers, but have no idea what it was about.
And Earth Warp! We spent most of it laughing at the alien, that looked like...well...look on that website.
Oh and badger girl, what was her problem?
noseyrosie 16-04-2004, 16:46 Just listened to the theme tune on the website and i got the chorus almost right!
Are any of the episodes of Dark Towers etc available on DVD or video?!
It would be good to see the whole shows as well as just clips from the web site?
Wow! I just found this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4181695399&category=60902) on Ebay! A DVD of all 10 episodes of Dark Towers for 12 quid.
If only I wasn't skint. I'd get it.... Only 3 days left as well dammit :(
mega_monty 16-04-2004, 23:09 Dark Towers was my favorite Look and Read series, I used to like the friendly ghost that used to appear in his four poster bed.
Can anyone remember those silly countdown clocks that used to appear before the start of schools programmes, where all the dots would slowly dissapear and where accompanied with some crappy Interlude music, like the ones below:

www.625.uk.com/tv_logos/flash/bbc_schools_clock_83.asp

Oh and can you remember your schools video recorder, a huge top loader thingy with huge chunky switches

I think the education was supposed to come from Wordy's 10 minute slot in the middle of the programme. Not quite sure how Wordy fit in with the rest of the drama though...
SatanInHeels 18-04-2004, 19:19 spywatch rings a bell... but i dont really remeber all that much about it to be honest... not long since i was in primary school either!!
aim'n'Mark 18-04-2004, 19:47 does anyone remember picture box? it used to start with a glass box with a red material lining and it used to spin round.. it had some sad bloke presenting it, but cant remember his name!! There was also a maths programme with a boy and a girl and this weird bloke like a jester (i think) and they used to say "ticky ticky tocks into the box" and it transported them somewhere to learn about maths!! If anyone can remember that please let me know!!
I remember picture box, just from the box that used to slowly rotate at the beginning . . . I'd get hypnotised by it everytime!
Also, am i just dreaming or was there a childrens programme presented by Beryl Read called 'Mooncat'. with a cat puppet wearing a helmet??
While we're at it can somebody also tell me what the title of the Jackanory-type programme was - it was set in the ruins of a church and the storyteller would always tell spooky stories?

Yep, it was huge, silver, top-loading and had a not-so-remote control on a wire! And they never worked ever.
It used to be wheeled in on a large trolley/cabinet thing that was kept locked with a little padlock, and it used to take ages for the teachers to open the damn thing and find an extension cord for it! And we only had one per floor! They used to get wheeled all over the school!

'Tales From The Crypt' was something close to that.
Chris.
Does anyone remember Charlie the cat that used to give advice to his owner the little boy with the ginger afro?
'Charlie says...blah blah'
Also whilst im at it, do you remember:
Tickle on the Tum ( tickle on the what? . . look down theres tickle town, & theres the river Tum )
Wizbit ( hup hey this-a-way, hup hey that-a-way )
Cockleshell Bay - ( Robin & Rosie 'We're starving Mr Ship! )
Bric-a-Brac
Something with a large machine in it called Bertha?
Gideon, Jamie & the Magic Torch, Dogtanian . . . i could go on & on . . They were the days!
I remember the 'Charlie & I' ads. It was around the time when there was a lot of publicity about not talking to strangers. I found them amusing and I think got the point across quite well.
I also watched Dogtanian and the three muskahounds. It seems to go on forever and was also repeated quite a few times.
