View Full Version : Where can I find good food and service?
powerkitegir 16-04-2004, 07:50 seem to find it virtually impossible to get a restaurant with good service (and good food). Anyone know of any? Call me a moanining old cow if you want but surely this should come as standard?
By the way anyone know what the Old Mustard Pot is like, near Stocksbridge? (with regard to food, service, beer and atmosphere).
*Twinkle* 16-04-2004, 08:01 I can't fault BB's on Devonshire green :) Lovely food, staff, service and prices!
Greenback 16-04-2004, 10:43 Mustard Pot is ok-ish - food's average but pricey, service is fairly good and it's pretty quiet. I think it likes to think it's better than it actually is - if that makes sense!
It's a bit far out but I'd seriously consider giving Lovers Leap at Stoney Middleton a bash - great, friendly service, lovely bistro-style food and it's a very cosy little place to boot. Otherwise, can't go wrong with Thyme.
Try 'The Cricket Inn' Totley, Dore.
(- or The Lions Lair in town)
Both run by the same bloke.
A friend went to the cricket and said the food was fantastic and v. classy, but well-priced. Similar style at the lions except more lunchtime market. Service at both supposed to be v.good and the cricket is aiming for big things, so get there first.
Skatiechik 16-04-2004, 11:30 I agree with Greenback's comments on the Mustard Pot.
I quite like the Foxhouse, good food, good prices, and good service. Altho' there is a downside, it is normally quite busy.
powerkitegir 16-04-2004, 12:04 thanks for those. I have read some of the other posts, and wondered if there were more Japanese restaurants, or just the one (which didn't get particularly good reviews)? Oh, and where is Thyme and what is it like?
neeeeeeeeeek 16-04-2004, 12:18 Thyme used to be fat jacks in broomhill, it;s expensive but dead good. only eaten once, service and food both excellent.

That's the Thyme Cafe. The Thyme restaurant is in Crosspool.

Went about a fortnight ago and it was just about empty :) Pretty nice but I've had better - went to The Sitwell Arms, Renishaw last night - steak was a right git to eat, full of grissle - took about a week to cut it up.
Go to lions lair on burgess street, also the wasabisabi is very good.
If your wanting something v.special, try fichers at baslow.
Also solas just refurbed and is pretty smart.
If your after Pasta head to the Pasta Place on Sharrowvale road, its owned by the guy who used to have santinos. V good.
powerkitegir 16-04-2004, 15:29 so, whats Thyme Restaurant like? Which one is the reference to?
Greenback 16-04-2004, 15:37 Sorry, I was referring to Thyme restaurant at Crosspool. Good, modern food, and not too stuffy - though I read in some guide that some of the customers can look a little too pleased with themselves foreating there, and I can't really disagree with that comment. Still, shut your ears and you'll have a lovely time (or thyme) :)

crowefan 17-04-2004, 02:34 thyme cafe and the crosspool thyme are both good.
all bar one has good food and service generally is good also
lions lair is lovely too but smokey.
not many people think of going to "sparks" at the sheffield college,or at least probably have never heard of it,they do both lunch and dinner at very good prices....its a teaching resturant,so you get everything from classical dishes to special "themed evenings" friday night is the best though, the lecturers in the kitchen are masterchefs of great britain and most importantly THE BOOZE IS CHEAP! lol
hello i am the chef from lovers leap bistro and i would come here to eat but i have to cook so i can't! i reckon we are as good as any in sheffield. give us a try. when booking quote sheffield forum website and me (glen)
we have a website if you are interested www.loversleap.biz
Sorry to be negative - but I've been to both Thymes ie the restaurant at Crosspool and Thyme Cafe , Broomhill - and I wouldn't go back to either. The service at Crosspool was dreadful (and it was midweek, thought we were a largish party) and the food was 'ok'. The Thyme cafe food was pretty bad and expensive for what it was. The Cricket Inn bar food is great - haven't tried the restaurant yet.
For something very special try Greenhead House Restaurant at Chapeltown. The food is fantastic, you'll need to book as they only have about 12 tables. It is pricey but well worth it.
tinkerbell 28-07-2004, 11:14 Try The Wig and Pen on campo lane behind the cathedral. The food is outstanding and the waitress I had was lovely - really attentive without being pushy.
try having a look here, it might be a help.

I agree with caprice, you cant get much better for great food and excellent service, plus you can take your own booze, so its never an expensive night out, it suits a quiet meal or a wild celebration noght:) go you will not be let down.
cluelessmuff 09-08-2004, 20:50 I agree too with caprice - BB's is a great place to eat out. It's in such a good location where you can go out afterwards to some decent bars like the forum. I'd also like to recommend piccolos on west street. Again this is bring your own wine, lovely and cheap food, charming waiters, and a central location. Definately 2 italian restuarants that are worth a visit.
scottcross 10-08-2004, 10:09 I've been on this topic before and cannot praise enough the food and service at Napoleons, Owlerton. Its good modern cooking, the waitresses are friendly and where else can you get full on service like this from 7 at night till about 3 in the morning. We had a party and there were banners up and a cake, all the works, like I said I think they deserve the praise.
The Crown and Cushion pub at Burncross.
EdnaKrabappe 13-08-2004, 17:48 Went to the Mustard pot on Sunday. Lovely on a hot day. Although not much choice for veggies, very stodgy choice for Starter and main course and i couldn't finish it as it was too rich. Only cheese and leek rissotto for starter and then mushroom ravioli for main. Would have liked something more salady or lighter on a hot day but we'd driven all that way.
Desserts to die for though. Shared a creme brulee, although not as good as Sola's old one.
I've eaten in alot of places in Sheff and I don't think it gets much better than Marcos (near millhouses park). The food is to die for, service is perfect, the resteraunt itself is very classy and very unpretentious. Worth the extra couple of quid.. Only problem is its a bit hard to go eat anywhere else once you've been there..
Try The Peacock at Owler Bar. Really nice food and very polite and friendly service. Can get quite busy tho so be prepared to wait.

I used to work there as a waitress! Yes the food is amazing and cant fault the service either.
Really enjoyed working there and the rest of the staff did aswell, so i think that must have come across in the service
Try VIVA TEQUILA .What a place.www.vivatequila.co.uk

Looking through your posts, you seem very keen for people to visit TEQUILA - in fact, it's the only topic you post on.
Maybe your advertising would work better if you were to tell us reasons why it's such a great place!
eviljock 26-08-2004, 13:00 Try Regent Terrace - reasons here:

gtblades 01-09-2004, 20:27 Try Canton Orchard in Ranmoor. It's a bit out of the way but it must be the best Chinese restaraunt in Sheff. It's not cheap but not too expensive either probably around £60.00 for two including wine and beer. The owners are a good laugh although the lady chef (probably the top boss) can appear a bit sharp!

I know some very good places, BBs on Devonshire st, Gill the lady who runs it is great, then theres Maso's on Surrey st, the chef is lovely, and the service in both is great, Vitos on south rd, or if you want pubs the Rose & Crown at Stannington or the Admiral Rodney on Loxley rd, both on bus routes and also the service and price is good, or a little further out is the Yorkshire bridge, at ladybower, good food and good service, and if u drink too much they are also a B&B. Hope this helps.
anyone know if regents terrace is open on a sunday?
