Can anybody recall the first? circus coming to Hillsborough Park.

I think it was in the late 40's.

A man brought a large Russian Bear on the end of a very long steel chain to the bottom gate on Catch Bar Lane of the Hillsborough county school.

He stood up and danced for all us kids who gathered in the playground to see him.

I'm sure many will have their own circus stories to tell and i would love to hear them.

Happy Days!

I think it was Billy Smarts Circus..My Dad took me to see it when I was 5 or 6 years old, I loved the clowns..the Equestrian acts bored me, the juggler was great, and the lions scared me...The next circus to come to town after that was Chipperfields.

I remember going to a circus in hillsboro, about 1972. I went with a girlfriend and her younger brothers and sisters.
My big memory is how shabby it all was. The acrobats were from Russia. The clowns from Brazil. The knife thrower from Mexico. The trapeseist from Italy..and it was all the same people over and over again.
The elephants had boils (honest, they really did!!) and the monkey kept chasing one of the handlers. It really didn't like him and kept trying to grab him.
The best bit was a 'Cowgirl' who did tricks with the horses and a whip.....

I'm frightened of clowns...
