View Full Version : Chocolate - Why are women obsessed with it?

Is there a scientific/biological reason for women's obsession with chocolate? Most men clearly aren't nearly as bothered about the stuff as are the ladies. (Note: non-sexist, non-patronising use of the world "ladies" intended!)
It's not sweetness 'cos Jelly Babies and Liquorice Allsorts don't produce the same response or desire.
Is there a biochemical response of some sort involved here?

Is there a similar effect involved in Gents' liking for Draught Bitter? (I'm sure it's not just the alcohol involved here)

I don't deny that some women like ale and some blokes like choccy biscuits but generally speaking there is a general gender difference here. Any ideas?

Well it does produce 'happy hormones' or chemicals or something, that make you feel less depressed during that time of the month...yes, i know there are many women out there who will know exactly what my sources are...guys? Well it's unlikely you'll ever know where I found that one out...

There is a high level of zinc present in chocolate and during certain times of the month women can have deficient levels of it in their body, maybe that is why they crave chocalate?
or maybe it's a great excuse!

it might be cos everyone wants the flake experience
lying in an overflowing bath with loads of candles and a big fat bar of choclate.

as for blokes i think that is more to do with the experience rather than the bitter.
sitting round in a pub, having a chat, relaxed.
or maybe blokes get a depletion of some other vitamin or mineral like girls that we don't know about!

Sorry, but the pedant in me feels the need to point out that white 'chocolate' is NOT chocolate. It's an abomination.
There I've said it.
I feel cleansed.

LOL

OK I accept that point. However it tastes gooooooooood (to me).
You may also notice I said plain chocolate AND dark chocolate... which really are the same thing.

Anyway... no matter... I love it all (he says while chomping on a 400g bar of Galaxy Milk Chocolate).

I have it on good authority that women can eat as much chocolate as they want during 'that' time of the month. This is because it's eaten purely for medicinal purposes and thus, has no calories!!!!

I believe chocolate increases Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) levels in women, which helps stave off things like depression and anxiety.

I can take or leave chocolate. It isn't something that I would go out of my way to buy.

Most women/girls I know enjoy chocolate. Probably men do this also, but they do not always dare to admit this.

We’ve made two cups of hot chocolate with my GF recently. It made us so very drowsy and relaxed that we could hardly kept off booking tickets to the land of Nod immediately ha ha!

I think men like chocolate as much as women.
The difference is if we want some, we just go get some, eat it and forget it. We don't moan about our wasteline or hips and don't have to feel guilty for hours after.

That's my theory anyway.

serotonin? Not endorphins?

Ah - it does have an effect on both serotonin levels (low levels are linked to depression) and endorphins (an immediate hit gives you a slight high).

I heard (can't remember where or when) that due to the physical similarities between males and females (apart from the obvious)....that it is not unusual for males to experience similar hormonal and emotional changes a for a period of approx 5- 7 days every month....sod all to do with choccy I know but there you go

I dont particularly enjoy chocolate anymore  I once ODd on many packets of Riesens and since then feel ever so slightly sick if I have more than one bar of choc. I also dont like chocolate on its own, it has to have summat in it like biscuit or caramel or nuts and stuff, in fact the least amount of chocolate the better :loopy:
My mate Kev however is scarily addicted to chocolate and has an umbilical cord attached to Thorntons. He went to Switzerland for a fortnight purely for the chocolate!!!
... so it aint just us girlies that enjoy the stuff :D
