It is a lovely place with lovely people who will make you very welcome.
Just do a bit of Googling and you will see the beautiful beaches and corals.
Check what time of year as it can get a bit wild in the cyclone season, but generally OK.
It is a long way away though. Total journey time will be around 24 hours but as you will have to go via Los Angeles, or Singapore, Australia or New Zealand, it makes a lot of sense to have a stopover as well.
When we lived in NZ we did a house swap for a month with a family from Suva. We had a marvellous time with one exception, I contracted some strange virus which had me bed-ridden for 3 days which means I can no longer give blood. The upside was I lost over a stone in weight.
Do it or, you'll regret not having done it in later life.
MissGobby 15-03-2006, 10:57 i really really wanna go, i cant wait now!!
only down side is that i have looked for flights and they are all nearly £2,000!!!
anyone know where we can get cheaper flights or if there is any cheaper flights, there is no way on earth we can afford £4,000 for a holiday!!!!!
Agent Orange 15-03-2006, 11:03 Having never been to Fiji I can only go on what I've been told by friends who have been there. I've been told that it's paradise, but be warned that, as a woman, you are likely to be treated like a second class citizen. Apparently, it's not uncommon for the men folk of Fiji to spit and shout abusive comments or even ban women from going in shops etc. This extreme behaviour is probably limited to areas off the beaten track, but I thought it would be worth mentioning.

You should be able to get that down to about £1,000 each (if not lower).
Try looking at 'Round the World' tickets.
Oh.... and I have never seen anything of the sort mentioned by Mr Dastardly.
Like anywhere else, some of Fiji is paradise, but other parts are very run down, poor areas. My friend who's been there says Mana island is a bit rough. It would be well worth looking up info on the specific area where your fiancee's friend lives as it is likely to be off the normal tourist track.
I also haven't heard anything along the lines of women being treated like second class citizens. However, revealing clothing should be confined to tourist resort beaches only to avoid causing offence so you might find people are refused entry to shops for that reason. Crime rates (pickpocketing etc.) are fairly high and lone women are particular targets, so you shouldn't carry around significant amounts of money.
That aside, I'm very jealous!

http://www.cheapflights.co.uk/flights/Nadi/Glasgow/ Just did a quick google and found flights from Glasgow, some of which are around £600 - £700.
sharpend 15-03-2006, 12:08 Sheffield Eagles rugby league had a couple of fijian players a few years ago and I think its fair to say that they found it a bit cold in Sheffield...
When I went to Fiji I likened it to Pitsmoor with palm trees
