I will move to Sheffield next month and want to see where I can access Internet for checking Email before I can connect to ISP. Any suggestions around Northern General Area, or else where, such as internet cafe? The best would be free internet access if availalbe!

I think there is free internet access in Firth Park library which is just round the corner from the Northern General Hospital.

I don't know what the area is like for broadband availability, you'd have to check that out for yourself by checking your postcode and/or phone number on the usual sites such as BT Openworld, Tiscali, Freeserve etc, but avoid AOhell like the plague! Their service is pants, and their customer "support" and service staff should be lined up and shot, in the head, several times with a sawn off shotgun, they're hopeless.

You may be able to access Telewest broadband, will download at 5Mbps for £50 per month. Other cheaper options available.

Try the BBC Radio Sheffield building located near Sheffield train station...i'm sure they offer free internet access.

Personally i'd recommend Pipex for reliable access or Telewest if available. If you a casual surfer and have friends in the imediate area consider WiFi access to their broadband link?

And aren't Telewest's packages limited to max of 256k upstream? worth thinking about if you want a lot of traffic leaving your house!

I can recommend Zen (http://www.zen.co.uk) for broadband. Never had a problem with them. Was set up well ahead of schedule, don't have to buy their modem and you get five static IP's.

There's a few internet cafe's in town centre (and one in Broomhill that I know of). If you're new to Sheffield and coming into the city centre, probably the easist one to get to is Havana on Division Street (I think it's the junction of Rockingham Street and Division Street - 0114 2495452). Here's (http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?X=435000.739999416&Y=387000.270551043&width=700&height=400&client=public&gride=434939.739999416&gridn=387105.270551043&srec=0&coordsys=gb&addr1=&addr2=division+street&addr3=sheffield&pc=&advanced=true&local=&scale=25000&in.x=9&in.y=12) a map. I don't know how you'll get into town, but if it is by bus and you get off at the interchange, just walk uphill and ask people where Fargate or Division street are!

Someone who lives near Northen General may be able to give you a better idea of how to get into town!

Alternatively you could head out of town to Meadowhell and see if the Dixon's staff there will let you "test" a PC ;)
There may even be an internet cafe in there, but I don't know as I tend to steer well clear of the place unless absolutely necessary.

You could also sign up to BT Openzone - the McDonald's at Meadowhall Retail Park (separate from the actual Meadowhall centre) has it installed now....

Can anyone list any free or paid Wi-Fi spots available?

Do you mean wireless connection? If so, the Site Gallery provides it for free (was in the cafe the other day working online - very useful).
