I'd like to know any other good places. For takeaways we go to Wah Sing on Myrtle Road, and for eating out we either go to Candy Town on London Road, Zing Vaa on The Moor, or Golden Dragon just off The Moor.
Candy Town do a good vegetarian set menu (we used to be veggies, not anymore!) and the Golden Dragon do nice wontons.
I would be interested to know if anyone's been to Canton Orchard (always fancied trying it, but don't want to get there and find it's out of our price range!!)
Cheers
mikey 15-03-2003, 04:43 PM Hi Fronbow
I have heard Canton Orchard is very expensive, never been though.
There is one at the bottom of London Rd that has just moved there it used to be a bit further up and was called Tin Po Cafe. My wife used to go to the cafe and said it was brill, so give it a try. Also heard Vietnamese noodle bar on London Rd is good. Its always packed.

I've been to Tin Po. It served good food, the people working there were friendly and the price was OK, but the state of the place wouldn't make you want to go back! It feels dirty and a bit unwelcoming - shame when everything else is fine. I've been more than once but wouldn't take 'guests' there.
The best takeaway we've found so far is on Crookes Road, but I'm not sure what it's name is. It's easliy the best we've found for vegetarian food variety, though we've not really looked that hard :)
eckyfukinbo 14-04-2003, 04:11 AM all of you need to go to tin po cafe on london road, its the **** im telling you!!
Tony Ruscoe 14-04-2003, 01:05 PM I've been to Canton Orchard a couple of times.
The first time it was great. Expensive, but really good quality food.
The second time I went it was Chinese New Year and it was very disappointing! It's the first time I've ever seen a table of 9 people finish a complete banquet with nothing left (not even the stir fried vegetables)! Most of us were still hungry too. Now, they were busy, but that shouldn't have affected the portion sizes. We paid good money and got below average sized portions.
Having said that, I'd definitely go again.
Take aways... "Wok This Way" on Fulwood Road is fantastic (despite the name)! They do good deals like "spend over £12, get a free main course dish" and it's quite reasonably priced with a massive selection!
Anyway, enough talk of food... I'm getting hungry!
back2basics 14-04-2003, 01:34 PM I went to Zing Vaa a month ago and it was some of the worst Chinese food i have ever had. Very bland.
mikey 14-04-2003, 02:21 PM I went to the Vietnamese Noodle Bar on London Rd recently, it was fantastic value, good service, and you can bring your own drink!!!
As well as the noodle dishes they also do set meals and other oriental dishes.
You only have to drive past and see for yourself how good this resturant is, it is packed out all the time. They work on the principle of pile em high sell em cheap, so service is quick, and clearing away is quick, because they don't want you hanging around too long. They want the next punter sat down.
I had a basic sweet and sour chicken noodle dish cost about £3.40 and I could not eat it all!!!
Check it out its great......
takumi 14-04-2003, 03:54 PM golden dragon and mei's is good
:)
:D
Chris 14-04-2003, 08:23 PM I've been to Wok this Way and have avoided it since as it seemed unnecessarily expensive. Must have ordered the wrong thing...
Classic Rock 15-04-2003, 05:15 PM The Golden Lee (London Rd, Abbeydale Rd junction) is divine. They deliver locally. Ring up and you get a bloke answering who sounds like Roger Moore (deep sexy James Bond voice). Lovely food too. Very accomodating and cheap.
Wavey 07-07-2004, 12:01 PM I usually use the Hollin Royal at Hollinsend which is consistantly good but they have a very ordinary menu.. it hasn't changed in years.
Where do you suggest?
owdlad 07-07-2004, 12:19 PM The one behind the Old Harrow (owd arrer) at Gleadless is good,
but watch out for the slippery tram tracks outside.
owdlad.

claiireee 07-07-2004, 06:07 PM I think it's called Rising Sun (opposite The Springvale Pub on Commonside, near to the indian I mentioned on another thread...).
mr craig 07-07-2004, 06:41 PM East One Noodle Bar (www.east1noodlebar.co.uk) in West one is the best i've ever been to. The food is amazing, especially the roast duck and char sui.
Reidstar 08-07-2004, 03:01 PM Candy Town on London Road - no question!
Wavey 08-07-2004, 03:11 PM Does Candy Town do take outs then? I reckon I could drive down there and then get back in 10 minutes on an evening..
I've never been in but heard good things.. might give it a try in the week.
Thanks you lot!
Reidstar 08-07-2004, 03:47 PM I think they do take outs mate. It's slightly pricey but well worth it. Probs best to ring 'em first their number will be in the Yellow Pages innit.
Hope this helps!
Wavey 08-07-2004, 03:49 PM Thanks!
Just looking for some variety.
jwatson 08-07-2004, 05:29 PM Don't know what part of town you looking at but the one next to the apollo video store in Firth Park is beautiful and quite cheap.
Something like Manderin Palace???
My fav by miles.
PuressenceUK 08-07-2004, 05:42 PM Hoong Too in Hillsborough near SWFC on Penistone Road.
Classic Rock 08-07-2004, 05:51 PM We had food poisoning from a prawn dish from the Red Lion. Golden Lee, a bit further up London Rd, gets our vote.
fox20thc 08-07-2004, 08:12 PM Don't know what its called, its always been nicknamed Rickys.
The tiny one on Middlewood Road opposite the post office.
Special Chow Mein and Chips, about £5.
You get enough to feed 4 adults and its delicious:D
slh73 08-07-2004, 08:16 PM We always use the New Dragon Inn on Harborough Avenue. Great food, big portions, quick delivery, and they do Thai food now as well.
samsmum 09-07-2004, 12:14 PM the canton king in hillsboro...used to be kwongs.
huuuge portions at about £4.50 average.....
...loverley stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shell 11-07-2004, 05:22 PM Blue diamond on Holme Lane does a mean singapore fried rice & excellent sweet & sour chicken
Wavey 12-07-2004, 09:46 AM funnily enough we got a menu posted through our door last night which looks quite interesting.. its called Jade Garden at Gleadless, it does Chinese, Thai and Malaysian. Anyone tried it yet?
CaptainSleep 12-07-2004, 11:58 AM i went to the canton king over the weekend and it was fantastic. There was more than enough for three people. Brilliant food and excellent value
PuressenceUK 12-07-2004, 12:30 PM Conton King is nice and the portions are ridiculous, but still say Hoong Too edges it for quality, even though the portions aren't as big it's still enough to stuff you silly.
Nooka 12-07-2004, 02:05 PM I like the China Kitchen on Ecclesall Road, near Endcliffe Park.
Recommend the Palembang Beef and the Szcheun Crispy Pork.
Nice big portions too, usually have some left for breakfast next day. Hmmmmmm :-)
Golden lee on london road they deliver are dead friendly and the food is excellent
jsys11 14-07-2004, 10:07 PM The New Hing Wah (i think thats what you call it) on School Road, Crookes, excellent food been travelling from Sheffield 9 to there for past 7+ years because cant find a better place!!!!!
Rubber_soul 15-07-2004, 12:07 AM Wok's Cooking on Prince of Wales road is worth a try.
You can usually tell wether a chinese is any good by the standard of their egg fried rice dishes.
dwhembro 16-07-2004, 09:31 AM Went to china cafe on london rd last nite. Very, very good. Clean cheap food in a relaxed enviroment.
I recomend it.
Dave
Squiggs 16-07-2004, 07:13 PM The one on Holme Lane that used to be the China Lunch is now under new management.
Fu Hui something or other it's now called.
And the food (not that I had any complaints about the China Lunch) is really nice. Even the 3 quid lunch deals.
I had the satay and found the sauce to be tasty without being overpowering - you could taste every detail of the dish rather than just taste the sauce.
And the main menu (other than the specials) is more varied with some interesting looking dishes that I'll have to try soon.

Hi,
Anyone know any good chinese takeaways reasonably near to the Meadowhead/Woodseats area? Only just moved to the area and have no idea so any advice would be great.
Thanks,
Lee
Bluelunar 26-07-2004, 12:48 PM theres one at meadowhead, called china delight (its next to spar and the chemist near the round about)
they do deliveries aswell, call 0114 2748808
:D
Knoxville 26-07-2004, 01:08 PM Chian Delight at Meadowhead is good although in my experience they're not very reliable with delivery times. You tend to get your food quicker if you just go there and order. Longest I've ever waited is 15 mins and that was on a busy Friday night.
Canton Wok (258 1225) on Chesterfield road is very good. Never had a delivery from them as it's only 2 minutes walk from my house.
theres one of abbey lane on hutcliffe wood next to the co op
yorkshirei 26-07-2004, 04:10 PM There is a new 24 hour chinese opening in Sheffield. Wok around the Clock
Hi there
If you have a car, about five minutes journey to Dronfield, down the bypass, in Dronfield is Wok wonder!
This had a mention in the good food guide a few years ago!
The food is prepared by chefs in front of you, usually about 6, and all the ingredients are fresh, it beats any Chinese for miles!
Their Vemichelli, Duck menu, is exceptional!
I use to live at Meadowhead!
If you want the best Chinese around for miles, go to >
Ka -China
114 School Road
Waleswood

Takeaway and eat in Resturant, the staff, food is the best ever!
It is infact better than Wok wonder, which held my personal record for 3 years, unti lthis newcomer appeared!
Regards Mark ..
BBC222 01-12-2004, 12:34 PM whats the best chinese takeaway in sheffield, i really like the 2 handsworth ones rainbow and jewelcity
Ousetunes 01-12-2004, 12:44 PM Wok This Way in Ranmoor is usually good. I also like Red Ruby down in Hangingwater/Oakbrook but they are a little too expensive.
Although take aways are great, I still reckon that if you can get out for one, Jumbo Restaurant near the Crucible is fantastic! Done it three or four times and every time it has been superb!
Agent Dan 01-12-2004, 12:49 PM The Noodle Inn on london road is my favourite. Superb quality of food even if the menu is comparatively limited!
Fantomas 01-12-2004, 12:51 PM Canton Wok which opened in Woodseats a couple of months ago is very good.
Captain_Scarlet 01-12-2004, 01:08 PM I love China Garden on City Road and Canton House on Chesterfield Road.
CG put their food in plastic tubs, great for re-using ;)
scottf 01-12-2004, 01:23 PM The one next to endcliffe park is amazing- china garden i think- really quick service and the food is amazing :D :D
gezmac 01-12-2004, 02:39 PM There's one at middlewood across from KFC & they give you loads of food & it's good stuff.
JuLyCrystaL 01-12-2004, 04:56 PM Why not try No1 buffet? New Jimbo take away is cheap & nice as well.
RoyalRegular 01-12-2004, 04:58 PM Stannington's good, but only ask for a small portion of chips or you'll be eating them for weeks!
HarrietStar 01-12-2004, 05:04 PM new zing vaa on ecclesall road and east one in west one are both excellent :)
cosywolf 01-12-2004, 05:04 PM Canton Wok on Chesterfield Road, and they deliver. Gorgeous, and not all gloopy msg.
Tin Po Moor next to the Waitrose car park on London Road. It's a restaurant, but you can phone up and order for take-away. For veggies, they do mock duck and mock chicken. Yummy!!
Wok this Way - I think Abbeydale Road? Not used it but never heard anything but hugely glowing reports. From everyone.
Cosy:clap:
boyface 01-12-2004, 06:05 PM ah right...so Mock duck and mock chicken is pretend meat
I didnt know if this was the case or it was a style of dish I hadn't heard of
I shall check it out maybe :)

LOL! Not some strange recipe, but a veggie thing. I would never dare to ask what it is made of - some things are better kept a deep dark secret.
But soooo yummy!
Tin Po Moor is quite a nice little informal restaurant too
Cosy:D
Zebra 01-12-2004, 07:12 PM PLease just don't use The Red Lion on London Road, merciless bunch of rude rip off merchants.
On a brighter note, I second the votes for Jumbo, No1 Oriental is good but too much like a school dinner hall for my liking.
Vietnamese Noodle Bar on London Road is excellent, their fresh pressed apple juice is amazing and I prefer the take out rather than eat in, but thats me.
dolls 01-12-2004, 11:01 PM SUN YEE in Aston is the best, and they deliver
Anywhere else that's good for vegetarians. I like the sound of mock chicken or duck but live in S6.
pdrnsf 14-12-2004, 08:43 PM does anyone know of a good chinese takeaway in netheredge? moved here recently and havnt found one yet! thanks.
Fletch 14-12-2004, 09:18 PM as i type i am eating th best chicken fried rice in the world!! unfortunatly for you its from off school road in crookes
mat1978 14-12-2004, 09:33 PM Have a look here (http://www.sheffieldforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22543&highlight=chinese+takeaways) mate, there might be somert.
Mat:)
lazyfish 15-12-2004, 01:21 PM A place called Noodle Out opened for the first time last night. We got a few things from there and it was brilliant. It's run by the people who do Noodle Inn on London Road. It's on Abbeydale Road, so not quite Nether Edge, but they do deliveries - phone number is 250 7888.
mjlacey21 15-12-2004, 02:43 PM I live in nether edge and find Wild Rice on london road really good, so is the Noodle Inn, but avoid the Vietnamese Noodle bar cos it's really gone downhill in the last six months
Romario 17-12-2004, 09:32 PM In my oppinion, the best take away, is at the bottom of Chippinghouse Rd & is called 'Hing Lung'.
From the outside, it looks like nothing much, but is very busy always.
They still use the old fashione foil trays also & portions are huge.
Ecclesall Rd takeaways like China Kitchen & Zing Vaa seem to give you less in the re-useable plasic trays, & charge you more, not the Hing Lung.
Jumbo chinese buffet in town is excellent value also, for eating in!
Bilge 22-12-2004, 03:34 PM That funny-looking one on London Road [badly painted in a fetching brown gloss!] near the newsagents and library where the road forks into Abbeydale Rd.
The food in there was brilliant last time I tried it and staff very friendly. Seldom busy so I don't know how it pays. The decor doesn't inspire but it's def worth a try. Also a licensed restaurant open after pub hours.
Zebra 22-12-2004, 06:45 PM Unfortunately I have two DONTs rather than a do.
The Red Lion on London Road, used to be the bee knees, had a slowly decreasing quality of service and then a great big nightmare. I would say give them a miss.
Tried The Imperial on Abbeydale Road a few nights ago after one of their leaflet drops. Eeeek. I won't be going there again. I found the food too greasy and the spicy chicken and prawns utterly flavourless. I don't mean not to my taste, I really mean bland.
Jumbo in town is great, good flavours, great variety for eat in. Cheeky prices, they hiked them up £1 each just for December in order to capitalise on the festive season.
No1 Oriental Buffet is a little too 'school dining hall' for my liking but the food is ok.
If you hear of anywhere good let me know, I'm in the market for a supplier of my fav food!
Gazza 02-02-2005, 11:22 PM anybody know of a real good chinese takeaway around hillsborough / Ecclesall area ????
**Please dont suggest Middlewood Road, im looking for quality not quantity!**
Romario 03-02-2005, 01:03 AM Hi
The best chinese takeaway by far is the Hing Lung on Abbeydale rd at the bottom of Chippenhouse rd. It's small & the sign is yellow!, it looks like nothing, but is always busy, the food is ace, you get a carrybag full of prawncrackers in one portion.
On Ecclesall rd, the ground rate is expensive & not neccesarily good food & small portions!(plastic reusable dishes!)
The chinese comunity are Abbeydale rd, cheaper ground rate & proper foil dishes, bigger portions! & not making you pay more!
Rom
Shiesh 03-02-2005, 02:17 AM if you wanna travel to pick up your meal would suggest Mandarin house at Woodseats - huge portions and do a deal on Mondays for 3 main courses for £9 ...bargain!! Do delivery but as I recall that is £1 if you spend less than £12!! Otherwise FREE!!
scottf 03-02-2005, 10:36 AM Red ruby is around there and its amazing :D
skinner 03-02-2005, 01:44 PM Best by far is New Zing Vaa on Ecclesall Road.
coopster1974 03-02-2005, 02:53 PM Try the Hung Too on Penistone Road, near the Wednesday ground - very very very nice and they deliver as well as beef pork n chicken!!
Eclaire 03-02-2005, 04:03 PM I agree that The New Zing Vaa at Hunters Bar is the best tasting takeaway.
Zinger549 05-06-2005, 04:36 PM can any one recommend a good Chineese Restaurant
drolnhoj 05-06-2005, 04:41 PM Jumbos Buffet restaurant opposite the Crucible was very good when we went a few weeks ago. £8.99 eat as much as you want. That was in the evening. Cheaper earlier in the day. I think it is £4.99 up to about 4pm, £6.99 to about 6:45pm then £8.99 at night. I am sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong with the price breakdown.
Zinger549 05-06-2005, 04:45 PM chher i might check it out

jumbos is hit and miss, sometimes the food is great sometimes not so good, i have been recommended that one by the tram stop called no1.
oenbl7100 05-06-2005, 06:17 PM I WOULD NOT GO 2 ANY OTHERS AS I LIKE NICE TOP QUALITY FOOD AND NOTHING ELSE AND WHY NOT.
Dreamer 05-06-2005, 07:17 PM Zing Vaa on the moor is excellent. Have been on multiple occasions and not had a bad meal. Canton Orchard in Fulwood is meant to be good, went years ago and was then but do not know recently. It does tend to be more expensive though.
probedb 05-06-2005, 08:52 PM Jumbo is usually good, the one near the tram stop isn't as nice I don't think.
There's one across from HSBC just off Pinstone St that is supposed to be very nice. Zing Vaa is quite nice and cheap!
kirky 06-06-2005, 09:23 AM the one at the bottom of london road is nice can't remember what its called but its across from bed, best split link ive had:thumbsup:

Foodwise the Zing Vaa is excellent but I've always had a problem with the staff, who look on you (or look down at you, more likely) as though you're about to do a runner. (It's okay, Boss, I can easily afford your food!)
The staff/owners never smile and so I'm reluctant to praise this place, which is a shame because the food IS good.
Canton Orchard I've been to a couple of times and not enjoyed the experience. Small portions IIRC and again, snotty staff.
Golden Dragon seems to be where the Chinese community stuff their faces, which is about as good a recommendation as you can get.
I've done Jumbo about 4 times and absolutely loved it although the staff here tend to rush you. Why, one even brought my car to the door whilst I was finishing off my ninth portion of prawn toast.
Only joking, but you shouldn't be rushed no matter how cheap and cheerful the restaurant's policy is. Although I've heard that it can be hit and miss, depending on when you visit, so far for me it's been spot-on every time.
poimaster 06-06-2005, 12:52 PM As far as im concerned THE best chinese has gotta be Wild Rice on Lodon Road. Had (yet another) meal from there last night as was as impressed as always. I highly recommend the crispy beef in szechauan sauce....amazing!
The staff are friendly and always get my order right and they also keep your delivery details so you dont have to bother giving your address each time.
They also do a great selection of Thai food...give em a whirl...you wont be disappointed!
I've been to Canton Orchard a couple of times and the food was excellent. Their szechuan dishes are home made and are miles better than the normal "out of a jar" stuff you get.
However, it is a lot more expensive than the other places mentioned.
oenbl7100 06-06-2005, 05:47 PM I HAVE BEEN TO ALL OT THE ABOVE MENTIOND PLUS MORE IN SHEFFIELD AND HAVE FOUND THEY ARE ALL BAD IN 1 WAY OR ANOTHER HAS ANY 1 BEEN TO MAO YET ON LONDON RD.

OH DID I MENTION I AM A DIETITION AS WELL.
MAO 11 OUT OF 10
alessandro 06-06-2005, 06:02 PM Vietnamese Noodle Bar cant be touched for Chinese food.
Ive tried most of them on London road, plus various takeaways, and its great valuse for money plus tastes the best!
Romario 06-06-2005, 06:35 PM Whats up can no-one cook?
Jumbo is ok ,but full of msg & makes you feel ill, as do the rest!, cook it yourself or as i'm trying to start my own business cooking from your homes, invite me around!
You will then know it won't be full of crap!
Guest_225 06-06-2005, 10:45 PM I've said it before and I'll say it again -
JABU - London Road
Not your run of the mill Chinese and it's cheap too.
They have a regular menu, but the things to go for are the Chinese dumplings and "fondue". You get a big boiling bowl of soup mix and order up a vast variety of stuff to cook in it. You have to go there to really understand ! The staff are ultra helpful and friendly. BYOB because it's unlicensed and it's probably best to book because they only have 5 or 6 tables.
PS
citygirl 06-06-2005, 11:04 PM My favourite is Zing Vaa. I've always had a good meal at the Top Wok (side road off the moor) although the last time I went we were waiting quite a while for our meal. I had a lovely meal at jumbos but the layout reminded me of a canteen.
Darkdreamer 06-06-2005, 11:06 PM If you are looking for a good chinese buffet then try Marbel court it used to be called top wok its about £9 all you can eat but in sted of taking a tiny little plate and serving ur self in what feels like a school canteen you order as many dishes from a list of about 30 as you want and they cook it fresh as much as u wish and the staff are nice.
Good food ,good atmostphere well worth a try ;)

Why do I get the feeling that you work there? lol
I love Jumbo, indeed the staff seem to know me now
No.1 near the tram stop is awful in my opinion, it's like being in a large cold school hall, and the food isn't very nice.
Jumbo also have Bradwells' Ice Cream, which has to be worth £4.99 of anyones money :D
I've been to Marbel Court...well I say i've been, we actually did a runner asap, as we didn't like the idea of having to order from a menu, it was like they wanted to jump on the bandwagon of having a buffet ' all you can eat' offer on, without the worry of having food going to waste....it also gave them every opportunity to look down on you as you order your 12th portion :D
cellarhigh 07-06-2005, 10:37 AM its quite obvious oenbl7100 works there i think, three posts for the same place is a bit much and you can always tell the people who are dodgy cause they write in CAPS :D
besides iv been to that one on west st. and although its decor is extremely nice I thought the food was distinctly average for a chinese resteraunt. Nice but wouldn't rush to go again. Plus I went on the opening weekend so its not like I would have caught them on a bad day. Maybe I'm just too picky with my chinese but like I said the resteraunt is really beautiful, sheffield needs more up market styled places.
Jo7777 07-06-2005, 12:47 PM East One Noodle Bar definitely gets my vote for being the best Chinese around.. excellent choice of food, good value for money, delicious dishes and situated in the trendy part of Sheffield.. What more can you ask for?!
MissGobby 07-06-2005, 01:27 PM Yeah, if your wanting a buffett style meal jumbos is your best bet, its lovley there, mind you, you might put a couple of stone on though...lol....its cheap as well! :)
jaki_fruit 07-06-2005, 04:03 PM well ive never heard of this fella 'oenbl7100'
but i work at mao so im bound to recommend it! i do enjoy eating there, the food is great and the staff are very attentive and this is the majority of what mao sells itself on.
try the minced pork lettuce wrap starter... its amazing!!

Does it come with any sauce – say, the blood of a million Tibetans and Cambodians? ;)
Looks like a nice restaurant but I think the suitability of the theme is more than a little questionable.
SilentStatic 07-06-2005, 06:58 PM Number One Oriental Buffet is highly recommended from me. Only four quid at lunchtime (all you can eat) for us students, but there was still loadsof choice. And tasty it was too :D

You're absolutely spot-on, Citygirl.
The food at Jumbos is lovely and very good value, but it IS like a canteen there. There's a distinct production-line feel to it. But hey, you gets what you pay for, I guess. And the food is fantastic!
The Zing Vaa is far and away the best Chinese restaurant in Sheffield. I've eaten there many times, and the food has always been delicious. The only better Chinese restaurant I've ever been to is in Stockport, and that's a bit too far to travel to for an evening meal! :D

haha not that ive noticed!! i agree that the theme isnt the best but it beats the usual 'china kitchen' 'oriental ocean' stuff cliche stylee places!
Grachan 13-06-2005, 01:20 PM They do great pork dumplings at Mei's, which is a bit hidden away down some stairs near the Grosvenor hotel, just along from John Lewis and that shop that sells the funny furniture.
I always go there for my take-aways. Pork Chow mein with crispy noodles and pork dumplings.
Marvellous.
johnnyh23 25-07-2005, 09:54 PM Hi,
Me again, also Could you please tell me the best chinese?
Thanks
mjonah 25-07-2005, 10:45 PM MANGE on Heeley Green is the best chinese takeaway
evildrneil 25-07-2005, 10:46 PM For a resturant I like The Canton Orchard :)
Maddy 25-07-2005, 10:51 PM For take away The Golden Lee on London Rd can't be beat and the guy who often answers the phone/does delivaries has the best voice :D
PuressenceUK 25-07-2005, 11:05 PM I'd second the Canton Orchard in Fulwood - lovely grounds, lovely food and not outrageous prices.
Ka-China at Waleswoood (used to be the Waleswood pub) is brilliant.
It changed to a chinese restaurant soon after the pub closed and wasn't very nice at first. I think they have new owners now and it's been totally refurbished. The menu is extensive and the staff are lovely and friendly.
You'll need to book for Friday or Saturday nights though. It's out of Sheffield (Waleswood is right next to Wales) and close to Rother Valley so it's a bit out of the way if you don't live that side of town, but it's well worth the trip.
Meaks 26-07-2005, 12:25 AM Come along peoples... Candy Town?
Carmine 26-07-2005, 11:30 AM The Zing Vaa on the Moor is a very good choice, or for a more modern feel you could do far worse than Hui Wei on Glossop Road.
Tubthump 26-07-2005, 11:54 AM If it's proper authentic Chinese food you're looking for, head down to the Golden Dragon on the Moor. It's by far the best Chinese retaurant and holds it's own with some of the best that London's Chinatown has to offer. I'd reccomend going down on a Sunday lunchtime for a Dim Sum lunch.
MJonah, I live near Heeley Green and the Mange looks disgusting. Is the food honestly good or is your opinion born from not trying out any alternatives?
KookyKoo 26-07-2005, 12:10 PM I'd say either the Golden Dragon, or Mei's- not v nice setting, but the food is excellent!
Malkin 26-07-2005, 12:13 PM Candy Town Candy Town

Exactly what I was going to say...
For a cheaper but fabulous alternative - Vietnamese Noodle Bar (London Rd) Not as friendly but the fried noodles are the best I've ever had.
And I have to say - living in Heeley Green - Mange is the WORST takeaway I've had in my entire year of living in Sheffield!
They don't even do crispy duck! (plus it's called mange - which I can't say without wanting to giggle.)
Steelcity 26-07-2005, 06:36 PM Generally on the Chinese, Japansese and Thai food front, we love:
Take away:
Noodle Out - little or no MSG as far as I can tell (I'm fairly sensitive to it), incredibly fast serving and the food is gorgeous and relatively healthy
Sit Down:
Wasabisabi, London Road. Not cheap, but the Super Sumo Set Teppanyaki is the biz.
My snapshot:
Best Dim Sum: Zing-Vaa
Best for larger groups: Candytown
Best Buffet: Jumbo's (Hit and miss tho)
Best Noodles: Noodle Bar on London Road
Best for Corporate Entertaining: Canton Orchard
Try a Thai?: Baan Thai
A bit of Everything: East Ocean Cafe
Overpriced: Hui Wei
Personal Fave: Mei's
Takeaways: Many!
There's new places popping all the time that are worth a try tho.
daverity 27-07-2005, 05:22 AM Can I stretch this a bit to include perhaps dronfield and nearby. Just posted one about pubs and places to go out there and nearby because I'm moving there. What's the Chinese, Indian and general restaurant/take-away situation like in that part of the world? Tell me about the bad ones as well as the good. Thanks
gribz 27-07-2005, 11:31 AM Simply Chinese in Dronfield is absolutely spot on IMO, very nice set up in there and pretty quick. They also do takeout but you have to phone the order in first.
There's also Little Italy which, so i'm told, is quite a good Itailian (never been there myself, but always looks packed out when I go past).

Thanks for that Gribz will give them a try. Was going to ask why you were calling me IMO but just worked out what it means:D . Any worth staying away from or is that a bit sensitive to post on a forum?
trophyman 27-07-2005, 12:06 PM got to admit wah sing on myrtle road is excellent. they charge £1.15 to deliver to gleadless but thier food is first class
safc_leggy 27-07-2005, 12:59 PM Jumbos just off arundel gate isnt bad, all you cant eat buffet although they do charge you for tap water which is shocking

"All you can eat" Chinese restaurants = Yesterdays leftovers standing for hours on end, coated in a thick sheen of MSG with chips = :gag:

None that I know of, but I don't venture into Dronfield that often :) The Toby Carvery right on the edge of Dronfield/Sheffield is good as well if your after a nice Sunday Lunch. ;)

jenhoppy 28-07-2005, 10:28 AM Try the Crystal tkeaway at Beighton next to the snooker club............yummy by far the best i think!!!
Ja Ru (Ja Rue?) on London Road. it's a 'fondue and dumplings' place and it's lovely.
It's a little strange at first as you are provided with two bowls of soup on a hot plate and all your food is brought over raw. You cook it in the soup of your choice.
It's only small, but that makes it feel more imtimate. The waitress who works there is very friendly- I'd go there again just to chat to her.
And plus, it's so cheap. Eight of my friends went for my birthday, we were there for four hours and ordered that much food that, as well as the two tables we had, they had to bring over two trolleys stacked with the rest. And it only cost us £68.
Amazing place.
morientes 19-08-2005, 02:44 AM East Ocean Cafe has got to be the best for variety of food (I had Japanese sushi for starters and Chinese for the main course) but the quality was easily the best compared to any (Chinese) on London Road. Service was excellent and the waitresses are so well mannered (and not bad looking too!). Surprised that it hasn't had much mention on this forum.

Zing Vaa - no way could you recommend that restaurant. It is definitely the worst in my opinion. Today, was my second bad experience with Zing Vaa and never again. The first time, the skinny waiter swore expletives when it got slightly busy at lunch and my missus (who is Chinese) was upset by his rudeness! Today's experience was the final straw when 6 of my pals were forced to sit on a table crammed against the wall and we all walked out when the waitress literally threw the menu at us on the table. Poor control of staff definitely will ruin this restaurant no matter what its reputation is.

I second that.
I love the Japanese Bento box. Food, Atmosphere and service easily the best in Sheffield.
Jumbo good for a quick chow.[SIZE=3][SIZE=4]

Why do people go to a Chinese restaurant for a curry, but never go to an Indian for noodles?

He may work there, but he's right. I wouldn't go so far as to say cheap but we did have a really really nice meal there... interior decor is lovely and you feel you're somewhere a bit more special than a chinese on london road - we've decided that Mao will be our "special occasion chinese", our "everyday, just cos we fancy one chinese" is the Vietnamese Noodle Bar on london road - ooh crispy noodles! our "in between, must be payday chinese" is Candy Town, also on London Road.
KookyKoo 19-08-2005, 02:27 PM I'd like to push Hui Wei on Glossop Rd/West St to the top of my list, it is sooooo good, delicious food, great atmosphere + decor and good service (apart from an incident involving a waiter insisting that the Martini Rosso he'd brought was a Bianco- which is what we'd ordered- but they later brought us a complimentary Bianco when they realised their mistake :) )
I had a meal once in the Canton Orchard which was as good as any I have had.
Colonel 29-08-2005, 07:22 PM Wharncliffe Side Chinese is soooooo lovely! They give you alot and the food is better than all the others i have been to. And believe me, i have been to a lot. It is also quite cheap and frankly is and undiscovered gem!
They do delivery too! Brilliant!
C
You obviously have tried the East Ocean Cafe on Matilda Street near the Moor. Its my favourite restaurant in town. Food wise it has the best variety (Chinese, Thai and Japanese) and quality but the service is excellent. Highly recommended!
cloza1991 18-09-2005, 04:03 PM Jumbo's and number 1's in town!
they both brill!
prices r gr8 2!
food is gorgeous!

Please read the above thread before choosing to eat at the Vietnamese Noodle Bar on London Rd....They have lost my custom thats for sure...
BennyBlanco 18-09-2005, 09:37 PM Hoo Wah on Middlewood Road, Hillsborough has always been good quality takeaway in my experience
Internetowl 18-09-2005, 10:09 PM We go to the takeway at the top of Bellhouse - very good food and reasonably priced...
Last chinese sit down meal I had was a place off the Moor - it was ok. Used to go to the Water Margin at Woodseats - now that was great food...and sorely missed...
Jimbob1989 18-09-2005, 10:53 PM My folks have been to Canton Orchard before but only on special occassions as its not cheap. Normally we do with a chinese take away a little further along from Canton Orchard in nethergreen opposite the juniors school. Food is pretty nice from there.

natasha77 28-01-2006, 11:23 PM i found the best i have been to is MAO on london rd
.the food is great authentic and no curry
I agree - Mao is an excellent Chinese restaurant. Sadly it never seems to be busy as it should be. But perhaps that's because we've never actually been at a weekend.
Highly recommended.
dxmedia 29-01-2006, 02:00 PM Jabu, opposite Mao, very very good.
Hossy 29-01-2006, 07:16 PM Lived in Sheffield since September and still haven't had ONE single Chinese takeout... I need to know the best one there is, in your opinion? I live on Park Grange - hope they deliver to me!
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!!!:)
officegirl 29-01-2006, 07:20 PM kins kitchen at gleadless is fab 0114 265 1889- they do charge delivery but its worth it
vidster 29-01-2006, 07:45 PM We used to use Kins kitchen but after one or two dodgy meals we switched to New Jumbo near the top of Granville Rd.
0114 2781919
Very nice indeed :D
Dear_Ladies 29-01-2006, 08:35 PM Best IMO is the New Zing Vaa on Ecclesall Road opposite Somerfield, but they don't deliver and it's miles from you. Saying that, I know somebody who used to drive from Walkley.
uexports 29-01-2006, 09:25 PM The finest chinese takeaway is the Red Lion on London Road. It looks like nothing from the outside and inside for that matter the but food...oh my god...the food....
thingy 29-01-2006, 09:36 PM golden house on richmond road is nice. we order from there regular and always find it nice and reasonably priced too
Yellowrose 29-01-2006, 10:08 PM Why is it Chinese takeout now and not Chinese takeaway? Is this another Americanism?
kwtcl1 01-03-2006, 11:30 PM i will recomend a excerllent chinese buffet itsb on george street in town near crucible its absolutely delicious
fridgeman 02-03-2006, 05:57 PM tried the WOKSWAGON on halifax rd tuesday night, it took less than ten minuets to serve me with a chow mein value meal £8.80, very good service and loads of food. very good
natasha77 02-03-2006, 08:39 PM Wokmania on west street is great!!
sTaGeWaLkEr 02-03-2006, 11:36 PM We went to the 'Number One Oriental Buffet' last week, just across the road from Ponds Forge, where the tram is. Food was excellent.......choices were massive........food temperature was as it should be. Environment was very different to anything I've eaten in before (well, apart from the refectory when I was a student ;) .....it's like a big hall. I think it used to be a Bank?
Anyway, eat as much as you like for £10-00 (starters, main courses, and dessert)
Overall, really impressed.

Yeah it is nice in there, I have been a few times and have always enjoyed it. The funny thing is I don't like chinese food, but there was so much choice I found lots of things that I did like.

maggidee 03-03-2006, 05:16 PM The "Golden Lee" on Highfields. although not a buffet is fantastic value for money.Try it, i am sure you will like it. Not expensive and and real tasty food!!!:) You need to book saturdays, but other times usually ok.
surfinjim 04-03-2006, 11:29 PM My vote goes to No.1 Buffet as well. They are really friendly and dead helpful with the kids, fetching high chairs, replacement forks etc etc.
Food there is plentiful and very very tasty! Especially the salt'n'pepper ribs...ddddddddddrrrrrrrrrooooooolllllllll.
IMO Jumbo is terrible. The food is ok, granted, but you can't get near it as there are too many tables in there for the space. When you ask them if you can sit upstairs, you just get Ring No Reply on their vacant expression's!
Jim:thumbsup:
SundaeGirl 13-03-2006, 05:28 PM Hey can anyone tell me where's best to get a good delivery of Chinese grub in the Chesterfield/Abbeydale/London road area? Not necessarily the cheapest (although obviously value for money is great), but the nicest.

theres one in woodhouse called china town restaurant that i use frequently and are superb they do delivery and may deliver to your part of town as there extremely helpful, if thats any good?

syko1979 14-03-2006, 05:03 PM I just love my local one, China Kitchen on Ecclesall Road.

shells2909 19-03-2006, 07:30 PM It has to be Hoong Too, Penistone road, near SWFC, food is fantastic and not too expensive, they deliver locally too, and although sometimes the waitin time is about an hour the grub is definately worth the wait!! Nicest curry sauce ever!!;)
skellypelly 07-05-2006, 07:08 PM Just had the worst chinese takeaway experience ever at the Rising Sun on Commonside, Walkley. As it is a Chinese-English, the only chips on offer are chip shop style chips, and rubbery-tasting ones at that!
Also, no free prawn crackers with the meal, as is normally standard.
Tried to make amend by visiting the chinese on Fulwood Road opposite the Tesco petrol station and the chips there aren't much better, and the prawn crackers were horrible!:gag:
:(
Will def stick to the New Zing Vaa on Ecclesall Rd in the future!
Randy Savage 07-05-2006, 07:15 PM i will recomend a excerllent chinese buffet itsb on george street in town near crucible its absolutely delicious
Isn't this the one which had the environmental health people in due to an infesation of ants - yuck!
Zing Vaa is good as is the take away, but IMO Vietnamese Noodle Bar rocks!
