Anyone visited the monday market at bakewell? I was there on bank holiday Monday and it was gorgeous, plenty of bargains, crowds, shops open, riverside, you can walk through to the agricultural centre where there is entertainment and a bar and cafe with stunning views of Derbyshire and the beautifull day was a bonus.

Have just come back from Bakewell today - went for a walk there. I was lucky that my grandparents used to live there (my Gran moved back to Sheffield a couple of months ago) so spent loads of time there when I was a kid. I have some very fond memories of that town, though I admit the market never particularly interested me at the time... You're right, though - the place has the potential to be very pleasant and the market is very popular. Popular with Bakewell's residents as well as tourists - it made up for the supermarket (and other essential shops) being so lame!

Bakewell is a beautiful town in a beautiful part of Britain, how sad that so many people you speak to who live in Sheffield say they have never been into the Peak district, and it's on the doorstep!

Th Peak District is fantastic. If I ever had foreign visitors, that is what I would show off to them. I love all the places. I hate driving normally, but love driving out there.

We often do a whistle stop tour: starting off at Peak Village in Rowsley, then Bakewell, then Cromford and finishing off at Matlock Bath for a walk on the 'prom' with fish and chips and a few pennies in the old carousel amusement arcade.

It's great.

And on the eighth day God created Bakewell and all was well in the world.

The countryside around there, within 5 minutes walk of the car park, is beyond belief.

Oh to live there.

Anyone visited the Old House Museum yet?

One day, yes. The houses are not that expensive, it's just the travelling to work.

Really?? I think the houses are quite pricey - on a par with Fulwood, Ecclesall, Dore, etc. Heres an example or 3:

It is a lovely place to live, though probably a bit too far out from Sheffield which is why I tend to prefer Hathersage.

It makes me laugh that all you care about is house prices.

It looks like the house prices there are similar to the prices in my home town.

Been mulling this one over, and decided that living there might be a bad move. Imagine having to cope with the influx of summer visitors and losing that magic that you feel when you visit every now and then. Suppose that if you live there and own a shop or something, then it may be good.

No, on second thoughts I think I prefer to treat it as an escape every once in a while.

When you live in a place like that you start to take it for granted after a while.

The Peak dist is beautiful, but the down side to living there is if you need hospital attention etc, then you have to travel to Sheffield, could be nasty in winter.

No, it's not "all I care about", but when someone says house prices in Bakewell are not expensive I have a right to contend that. A bit of research on upmystreet.com reveals that for an average property (across all property types) the average price is £188k, Vs a NATIONAL average of £162k (sale prices not asking prices). A semi in Bakewell averages £178k Vs national average of £146k. Hardly Chelsea or Kensington prices I know, but well above national averages. Worth it because it is a nice place to live.

No, not really, but the "seem" has a very active purpose in that statement.

Anyway, Bakewell ladies and gents...

....makes very nice puddin's!

Intyeresting statistic I heard the other day about the peak district. As you may know it is the most visited national park in Britain, but did you know that half of Britains population live within 60 miles of Buxton!
