having been in sheffield for 2 years now, I'm really keen on trying to set up a club night, but am having trouble finding a decent venue to hold it, was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of who/where to approach???

i'd like just to start something small and kind of cosy going with a d-i-y ethic (whoever wants to get involved can), playing rock, electro-punk, indie, riot grrrl kind of music (a mix of music that fuzz club almost but doesn't quite fulfill), music by bands like, le tigre, blondie, the ramones, sleater kinney, tracy and the plastics, gravy train!!!, x-ray spex, peaches, chicks on speed, yyyeahs etc etc ... basically some dirty dance around your bedroom variants on rock and roll, in an attitude-free environment
(kind of like a baby version of www.clubmother****er.com in london, or pussywhipped in leeds)

anyway, i was trying to find a home for this little idea but can't seem to find somewhere quite right, (small, kinda-scuzzy-in-a-nice-way, 2am license, free/or cheap to use, willing to house such a night)

I don't know as much about different places/venues around sheffield as i should, and have been trying to get out and find/visit as many places as possible, but would really appreciate anyones advice/help

cheers!

Sorry to say that it's unlikely that you'll get a place to run for free. I've been involved with running a couple of small scale club nights and for the most part they've charged in the region of about £200 or £300 for venue rental... However, if you get a good turn-out, then you can pretty much make up for that in ticket sales.

Check out Corporation, they hold events with the kind of music you're talking about, and they are pretty damned scuzzy.... Alternatively have a look at .Zero or Charles St. or maybe the Earl of Arundel.... Maybe a pub with a late license?

hiya mate,

I run the Bedroom on west Street, If you feel you've an audience out their that would come for your music, then I'm sure we could arrange something. preferably for a Monday or wenesday night.

The venue would be free to hire, it would be upto you if you wanted to charge.

Were currently licensed til midnite thursday - sunday, but normal bar hours the rest of the week.

Let me know or stop in and see me.

Cheers, Donal.

A good venue woulf be the ball room under the city hall - there is (or used to be) part of it with underlit floors! It would also make a fab venue for a swing or burlesque night :)

hiya, a couple of my mates run nights at .Zero nightclub in town. I dont think it cost them that much but basically the club takes a share of the door money plus all the bar takings so depending on how many people you get in there you should not only have a succesful night but you may also come away with a bit of profit. You have to pull in the crowds though otherwise they will pull the plug!!!!!

i also have several friends who have put on nites at .zero. i think u may be wrong with door split dante. they charge hire fees only. although u are correct if the promoters dont do the leg work and only pull in 50 people they do drop the nite, as the place is a 500 venue not a small pub. i think youll find any venue doing exactly the same.

yeah, totally agree on that one mate. Im sure my mate said they took a quid off him for every entry fee. Don't know where ive got that from then, maybe, im just talking ********!! Anyway, zero is a really good venue for a club night. Its well nice inside now. You can tell theyve spent a few quid getting it to look nice and the sound system theyve got in there is awesome. Some people still give it a bad rep from its old area 51 days but i don't see why. It's a really good club!!!

It's a lot of hard work. Unless you're prepared to do nothing else for the next 12 months don't do it.
