View Full Version : Recomendations for Vegetarian / Vegan Restaurants

Just wondering if there are any restaurants that have a good reputation for doing good food that cater pretty well to vegetarian and vegan tastes?

I'm not vegetarian myself, but know quite a lot of people who are, (my brother is a vegan) which makes an extra thing to take into account when arranging meals out...

So, any recommendations? I seem to remember seeing a veggie cafe in the centre of town near the winter gardens... Though a place that does meat too won't go amiss...

Blue Moon Cafe next to the Cathedral does the bestest vegan food. Kum Quat Mae down Ecclesfield Road (i think) is meant to be very good too.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I guess the difficulty here is in finding a place that can cater equally well to both veg and non-veg people. Especially since I don't want to separate my friends by food preferences...

Kumquaet Mae (spelling..) is on abbeydale road, next to the spar, and the pizza hut. Have read many reviews, meant to be really good food.

Neither of us are vegetarian, but we have dined at Kumquat Mae several times because the food and atmosphere is just so.

I have never tried it, but once a month they have a Japanese or special menu that comes highly recommended also.

If you do go to Kumquat Mae, then mention the forum!

I am a vegan and have been to all of those places.

They all do vegan dishes, it depends what you're after really. If you want a quick meal (lunch) then Blue Moon or Olive Garden is a good bet. Olive Garden isn't as big as Blue Moon so may be busy.

For an evening meal Kumquat Mae is great.

Blue Moon is impossibly full at peak times, but went yesterday for the third time, not too full as it was about 2pm. Hommity pie...yummity...

Actually, the name Kumquat Mae sounds really interesting... is it a chinese restaurant?

Thanks for all ther recommendations, people.

But as I said, I'd like to have a place I could take veggie and non veggie people... a normal restaurant that does very good vegetarian food, without having to "cobble something together"... Having said that, I think I'll probably have a go at Kumquat Mae anyway....

Kumquat Mae has alot of different food and the menu changes. All the food is fresh unlike alot of places, the humous dip that came with the started i had is great compared to shop ones

Kumquat Mae is fantastic - but make sure you're hungry if you decide to order more than one course, they don't stint on their portions!! I'm not a vegan myself, but I'm reliably informed that the Bah Nah Thai restaurant in Broomhill will provide Vegan alternatives to a lot of their dishes if you ring them in advance, which means that the meat eaters don't lose out and everyones happy! (Hopefully!) x

p.s. another good thing about Kumquat Mae is that you can take your own booze! (-:

There is a restaurant somewhere along West Street which I keep passing on the tram, can't remember what it is called but the sign on the window says that vegan and veggies are welcome, which would suggest that they also do meat dishes. It looks like it may be a South American restaurant but I am not sure.

If the food is good, the food is good, it shouldn't make a difference whether it has meat in it. So go to Kumquat Mae and tell your meat eating friends to shut up, eat and enjoy!

Kumquat Mae is the way forward. And if the people who eat meat miss it that much there's Chilli Chicken across the road.
I'm sure they won't mind you popping over inbetween courses.

The Fat Cat down by Kellham Island is great for veggie, vegan, gluten-free and always has meat options too. It's not a posh place but the beer's great and the atmosphere's always good. There's a website if you google.

I'm veggie, but I like plently of fat and sugar in my food and lots of it, I really can't be doing with all this healthy stuff.. I love the Olive Garden and the Blue Moon Cafe, but was disappointed with Kum Quat May - I vaguely remember small portions and a general feeling of having wasted my money, but obviously this is just my opinion and lots of the other people who answered you feel quite differently. Barring steak and burger joints, I usually find that most placed have adequate veggie choices. For something less formal but totally scrumptious - veggie or not - try the Peacock at Owler Bar, Its a pub but the food is superb!

Can't believe you've had so few replies... Try Kitos in Woodseats, Alaturka on London Road (my favourite - great staff too), The Mediterranean Sharrow Vale and the Siam InterThai on London Road

Cheers for that, is Alaturka a Turkish restaurant, it sounds it. What type of food do they do and what is the average meal cost?

Alaturka is Turkish yes, and they have a great selection of both meat and vegetarian dishes. Not only do they have a range of veggie main coiurses, but they are also happy to do any starter as a main course if you ask. The staff are really friendly, the foods really good and the atmosphere is great. I also went with a large group of freinds for my birthday and there were no long waits for food and we even got some free wine.

The long list I posted above is still current as far as I know, but note the Olive Garden closed a few years ago now. I heard there's a veggie cafe and health centre in Beighton called the Lifestyle Cafe, and there's the New Roots Cafe, 86 Spital Hill, Sheffield S4 7LG. 270 0972. Do you know of any places I can add to my list?

I heard there's a veggie cafe and health centre in Beighton called the Lifestyle Cafe.

So I made a trip to Beighton yesterday and found the Lifestyle Cafe where I had a soya Cappuchino on a comfy sofa. It's a nice space at the back of a "unique centre for complementary therapies and community initiatives". They run classes like Knit & Natter, Back Pain & Migraine Clinic, Painting, Meditation, Fitness, Children's Yoga, Pilates and lots more.

I went to The Bohemian recently, with a group of friends, and the food was just fantastic. I had a vegetarian goulash, with chick peas and mushrooms, served on cous cous, and it was delicious. Another friend had a feta filo parcel, which was nice, all chees-y and tomato-ey. Another couple of friends had the fish dishes, (one of which was pollock) they looked really nice, but, as a non-meat eater I wasn't enticed!

The menu is substantial, and varied, and the desserts are fab, too. I had pineapple and ginger cake (MMM-mmmm).

i used to be a veggie but ate vegan mostly cos i had a vegan girlfriend. i have never really liked the blue moon cafe, food always tasted a bit bland to me. problem with specialist veggie places is that good intentions don't magically turn into good food! lebanese restaurants generally have some good vegan options, you could try Sheiks (i think its called) on West St.

So if you (or someone with you) wants veggie food in a restaurant in the city centre in the evening, the choices are extremely limited. It would still seem to be just the veggie options in the usual indian, italian and chinese places plus the odd place with a bit more choice (such as Sheik's).

A decent veggie-friendly restaurant in the city centre must be a viable option for an entrepreneur out there surely? Non-veggies eat this kind of stuff too (unless they eat dead flesh at every meal and never eat veg) and they often want to eat out with their veggie mates.

I'm trying to find a city centre restaurant with vegan options... and I can't seem to find any. I've been ringing places but the staff always seem really unsure, so I don't want to risk going there and there being nothing for him to eat. It's happened before that we've been told there are vegan options only to find none when we get there....

I would cook myself only there'll be at least 7 of us and it's meant to be a treat for me ;)

edit - que tal on west street do lots of vegan options apparently!

I've booked at a number of restaurants before, and most are usually very good if you say you'd like to book but will have a vegan in the party. They usually come up with something half-decent if it's for a group.

I've had good vegan dishes recently at East One, Sheiks, Wagamama, Las Iguanas and the Showroom. None of these restaurants are specifically aimed at vegetarians/vegans, so acceptable places to take omnivores wanting 'normal' food, though chances are when the food arrives they'll peer at your dish going "ooh, that looks interesting, wish I'd ordered that" (that's what seems to happen to me at group meals, anyway!).

I haven't tried these yet, but I also noticed Que Tal has a vegan section on the menu, also Pizza Express will make vegan pizza if you ask (the bases and tomato sauce are vegan and they make the pizzas up from fresh so can leave the cheese off vegetarian ones).

Platillos, the tapas place in Leopold square does a good selection of vegetarian tapas, as well as meat and fish.Lovely place too, not cheap but the food is really good.

I'd also recommend the Bohemian on Chesterfield rd mentioned above, they only do vegetarian, vegan and fish dishes, delicious food food and great value especially if you take your own wine.

Ok, ok Cheryl22 and Steel117, we know about Bilash.

Please, this kind of persistent advertising just puts people off. People go with honest reviews given by people who have no ties with the place they are reviewing. Whether you do or do not have any ties, this constant advertising suggests that you do and just annoys readers and puts them off from visiting.
