Me and the mrs went in march this year and I've got to say..
York is by far the creepiest town at night to get lost in I have ever been to.

It turned about 7pm- all the shops were shut and the town was just eerily quiet.. especially around the minster area..
and we got lost! Doh!

And we basically sh** ourselves...

Anyone else been to york at night and felt like they were being watched near that area?

I've spent alot of time in York and can't say I would describe it as a creepy place. I do like the place alot, in fact I think it should be the capital of the UK.

Im sure York was the place where a guy was working in a cellar on a property referb or something, when he turned around and saw a roman army marching through the cellar walls...... ummm thats creepy....

Anyone know if Most Haunted have been to York yet ?

Most Haunted were there looking for evidence of Dick Turpin.

yeah it is scary. Parking was bad too and the only place we could get was in a scary place in the dark. It was OK in the day - a pretty big carpark at the back of a load of big shops but in the dark the shops were closed and it was just damn scary.
Its so good in the day though and the restaurants are nice so that makes up for it.

York's brill, a bit different from your average city centre, but I wouldn't really call it creepy.

Yeah, it was. Maybe he was just over-tired or something.

I lived in York for years and the only scary thing about it after dark, is the hoards of drunken people there when there has been a race meet!

Lickszz, you're dead right - York should be capital of England!

Also, it has one of the best cocktail bars anywhere. Which is obviously very important! ;)

Being originally from York, I would rather be walking around York centre after dark than Sheffield!

Current local controvosy is the introduction of parking charges after 6pm. The fact that you have to pay £2 / hour to park probably contributes to it being deserted!

I think York is a fantastic city, but I must admit getting a very strong feeling of evil when we visited the crypt in York Minster, i've never ever felt this in any other church building, most strange, and it was experienced by both me and my wife.

Has anyone been in Dick Turpins supposed cells in the York Museum.. very weird atmosphere when you go into the cells area which have been converted.

An absolutely wonderful city to visit!!

Still scary though around the minster area at 8pm onwards at night..

I hadn't found it too bad. The thing that scared me most was the junkies in the tower on the walls, horrid.

If you go on one of the ghost walks it can feel scary, there are certain parts where you get the hairs in the back of your neck stand up, but is interesting especially if they are true. But do be aware of dubious characters who know that these groups are usually tourists and will take opportunities to try and take advantage, don't leave the end of a tour alone. In some bits of the city centre it can be very quiet.

One of my favourite cities along with Lincoln, some great history, walks and shops. Go on the tour of the foundations of the Minster, now that is scary to think that it is just them bits underneath that are holding it all in place (though many bits have now been re-enforced). I would like to do a rooftop tour will have to find out if they do them.

Have you been down Attercliffe at night? very scary. It's like Michael Jacksons Thriller at times - podgy, balding men appearing out of dodgy massage parlours and lap dancing clubs in the early hours, unable to walk!

But what about Sheffield as capital?! We're more central in location too.

York's a great place and last time I went it was far from deserted at night - mind you it was in the middle of the summer and at the time of the Ebor race meeting so there were more than a few visitors bumbling around. What's the crack with the drinking laws in York anyway, something about no under 18's in pubs and you're not supposed to be drunk on the street or something daft???!!!

I am also originally from York and don't think I've ever been particularly scared at night - I feel safer walking around there than Sheffield, as long as it's no later than pub kicking out time. A high concentration of pubs usually mean there are lots of people about.

The ghost walks are pretty good, a bit creepy even if you've heard all the stories lots of times before.

I think making it the capital of England would probably ruin it though - it's a nice little city as it is (prefer living in Sheffield though - no tourists! and nearer the peaks, plus hills are more interesting if more tiring)
