SolidsSister 03-05-2004, 17:17 My brother Solid State played there. I'll ask if he's got any tapes. Society 09-05-2004, 19:09 Discuss? Well, yeah, it has to be well up the list! My name is Solid State and I was the main Sheffield resident at the Jam Factory throughout its brief run from Sept 1991 to June 1992. For those who don't recall this night, the other residents were Anwar and Green, Dave Seaman and Dave Ralph (Ralphy). Anyway, I have one tape from The Jam Factory, dating from April 1992... it's of me (sorry, not Dave Seaman!) I also have access to a tape of the April 92 Sasha appearance (provided my mate Rich still has it... a slightly long shot but you never know!) There are also several tapes still existing of my Fantasy FM Saturday show, and several home mixes that are basically Jam Factory demo's. Let me know if you are interested in copies of any of these. PS I too would be interested to hear from others who have managed to hold onto Jam Factory or Fantasy FM tapes from the 1991-92 era. ... Is There Anybody Out There? :-) SolidsSister 12-05-2004, 21:03 That's my brother I was telling you about. gibbage 20-05-2004, 15:14 The Jam factory was very good, but the best Sheffield club ever I think not!! In my opinion occasions(88-94) would take some beating,i've a few live tapes from it,but I would also be intested in the jam factory tapes as i was a reguler there too!! JamesRich 20-05-2004, 15:44 What about Rise at the Leadmill, from about 1996 to 1999. Me and my mates still reckon that was the best night ever. gibbage 20-05-2004, 16:51 I think "rise"started in 94 around the same time as "love to be" at the music factory, had some good nights in rise, but perfered the M.F. as had better DJs and a more clued up and friendly crowd. Must be up there for the most glamourous club in Sheffield:thumbsup: oldgreen 31-08-2004, 14:56 Originally posted by Society Discuss? My name is Solid State and I was the main Sheffield resident at the Jam Factory Hey richard, they never told me that !!!....green. BTW, I have NYE 91/92...."CJ's posse" on the microphone if you remember it. chri5 06-09-2004, 16:42 Jam Factory was a great club but I was torn between Jam Factory & Occasions (Techno city) (around 1990 -1991) Not heard the name Solidstate for a long time though nice to see your still around Sheffield! H.P 06-09-2004, 19:13 I remember techno city jon jack master j and owen music maker were residents there. I recall that the majority of clubbers seemed to be far too young to be in a night club. also remember the sweaty walls lol Damon 07-09-2004, 09:02 Occasions on a Saturday night around 1990 was a clubbing revelation for me. Parrot and Winston played the tunes, Warp Records were playing a load of their earliest cuts there - the bleeps of Sweet Exorcist's 'Testone' brought forth cheers and airhorns aplenty, and I believe it was first played there on cassette - and the 50/50 mix of black and white clubbers dancing to house, techno, soul and funk gave it an irresistibly unique atmosphere. Always hotter, sweatier and less dressy than Jive Turkey (in its neo-classical ballroom setting), Occasions on a Saturday was the night that showed me what clubbing was fast becoming. And the thing that was so fabulous about it was that it felt utterly and uniquely Sheffield. Regional differences in dance music really existed then as DJs weren't really travelling to other cities - I don't think a night like this would have gone off in Manchester in 1990. The Hacienda scene was very different. Only Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford were doing nights that looked and sounded like Occasions that year. And of course, as it reached its peak, it all rolled into the euphoria surrounding the Italia '90 world cup, and for some reason Cameroon became team of the moment - I recall "Cameroooooooon!" being bellowed across the dancefloor as airhorns went off and Winston yelled "Make noise!". I have been to nights that were madder and I've become a regular at clubs where ultimately, I've had more 'special' moments (Voodoo and Bugged Out in Liverpool especially), but Occasions was there first, and it was a Yorkshire thing - it felt like something that would be almost inexplicable to a clubber from London, or Bristol, or Newcastle. Delboy71 07-09-2004, 13:29 I started a thread about Jam Factory and tapes in the 'Going Out' forum. Me and some friends have some tapes and would be interested if anyone else has any. Could do with remastering if anyone can do this?? chri5 08-09-2004, 20:00 Originally posted by Damon And the thing that was so fabulous about it was that it felt utterly and uniquely Sheffield. Very true. Tunes like LFO, Tricky Disco and Nightmares on Wax used to rock that place. Society 19-10-2004, 09:39 Oops sorry Green! Me the 'main resident' ?smack me round the gob for saying that! Didn't know you were listening!... ahem! Anyway, I have to agree that Occasions/ Jive Turkey was the best club to come out of Sheff. I went within a weeek or two of it opening (Jan 1985 when it was called Mona Lisa's) and they were my main musical influence from then on (if only in the sense of consciously NOT trying to copy them!) - Winston and Parrot are hands down the most important djs Sheffield has yet produced. And yes, it was unique to Sheffield, the Jam Fectory, great as it was, was an 'import' - Greeen I think you were responsible for the idea of trying to copy Shelleys here in Sheff! Well, it worked. Tho Im still very proud of the night, it was never on a par with Jive Turkey in terms of innovation, uniqueness, quality of music etc etc...though, at the time, there was nothing to touch it for atmosphere. RIP to the both of em! Damon 19-10-2004, 10:22 Society/Solid State... did you go to Abbeydale Grange? Society 20-10-2004, 09:01 Yes, as it happens, I left in 1985, and my civilian name is Richard Hardcastle. Why, is something spooky about to happen online...? :-) Damon 20-10-2004, 10:07 Originally posted by Society Yes, as it happens, I left in 1985, and my civilian name is Richard Hardcastle. Why, is something spooky about to happen online...? :-) He... then j'accuse you of once going under the name 'Hitch' (I think) and hanging about with the likes of Joe Simpson and Dave Ranyard. And I've got a yellowing article stuck in a scrapbook somewhere that I snipped out of Melody Maker or Sounds - it's all about the Sheffield club scene (1988 vintage) and features a photo of your good self playing out somewhere or other, together with the 'hilarious' caption "Look! It's the lost Proclaimer!" Before it starts to sound like I'm some weird stalker, I must add that I snipped the article because it was about Sheffield, not because it featured a pic of your visage. Good call on Occasions by the way ;) Society 20-10-2004, 13:22 Correct on all counts... and yes, I remember your name if not your face... and of course 'Mr Fairclough' rings a bell...you prob remember my sister, Penny, too, who was in the year above you? How did you suss out the Abbeydale connection? Was it the Sounds article that 'joined the dots'? I still have that article too. Winston and Parrot are on there with another 'hilarious' caption re the dog getting Winston's jacket (cos was frayed - duh...) If you fancy meeting up for a chinwag come along to one of our Society nights (at Dulo, London Road, free entry 2nd Sat of the month) just come and say HI! I still look like the person in the photo, just balder! PS no idea about Ranyard or Simpson these days, have you..? Damon 20-10-2004, 14:12 I've sent you a PM mate. Please forgive me if dates and events do not add up, my memory is not what it used to be.:) I have a couple of tapes from this club, one by Dave Seaman from 27/06/92 and another one from 91 (think this one is Ralphy but not too sure). I had some of the best nights ever in the Palais, E'd and whizzed up, dancing my head off and not a care in the world. I am trying to put these tapes onto youtube this week hopefully and i will link them here when i get that done. I will always remember a chap with a short beard gurning like a madman chatting with me while i was getting a back massage off my girlfriend.
