Whats the area like in general? DaBouncer 11-04-2004, 11:47 AM Norton Lees is anice area. Not sure about the best pub. Maybe the sportman? Not really been drinkin round there TBH. The people are nice, it's a safe area and environment (especially for kids) which is a bonus. Yeah... you've picked a nice area there mate! fnkysknky 11-04-2004, 12:25 PM Apart from it's full of Newfielders ;) Funky Dave 12-04-2004, 12:58 PM I lived most of my life in Norton Lees, and it is a nice area (though you occasionally get some low level problems fro the Newfielders during their lunch/leaving times). The pubs are all filled to the rafters with locals who've been going there for decades, but they're all friendly and you'll never see any trouble in any of them. The Prince of Wales is a good one. If you have kids the Cross Scythes is probably your best bet, as you can dump them in the play area while you sneak off for a swift half. uniB 20-04-2004, 02:59 PM I live in Norton Lees, I like it, pretty quite and the people are friendly (apart form the ones who tried to get in my car the other night although I suspect they might ahve been on an evening outing from Newfield Green or similar) The only problem for me is the lack of pubs, normally end up in the Woodseats palace on Chesterfield Road which is about a 15-20 minute walk away or the Red or White Lion. My local Co-op has recently had a cash point machine fitted - it's getting well hi-tech in Norton Lees these days!! evildrneil 23-10-2004, 11:36 AM I've been looking at houses in Norton Lees recently and although it seems a ncie enough area (though in a bit of a not in town, not out of town limbo!) the houses in the area don't seem to be selling and theres LOTS for sale - anyone got any ideas as to why this may be the case - and anyone got any comments on the area (preferably not involving the use of the word chav which is becoming WAY over-used!) LittleWitch 24-10-2004, 01:25 AM From what I've found on my house search, some of the houses at Norton Lees are leasehold, which is a situation not many buyers want to get into these days. marycrookes 24-10-2004, 08:36 PM I have lived in Norton Lees for twenty years and have never had a cross word with anyone, there is a mixed age group, the majority of people are very friendly, plenty of shops at Woodseats also plenty of pubs, also at Woodseats, the pubs on Derbyshire Lane have already been mentioned, close to schools and parks.I live at the top of a hill, so have wonderful views. Our house is for sale but it's freehold, and we're having to move for health reasons or otherwise we'd never leave it,I hope you are as happy as we have been. espadrille 27-10-2004, 07:11 AM I used to live in Norton Lees 8 years ago,now just sold my house at Meersbrook, which is just down the Road. The Thorpe House Rd estate is popular. The locals are ok, not snobby or anything. There is a co-op , a post office, an off licence and a newsagent. That is about it. The nearest pub is Cross Scythes at top of Scarsdale Road, or Prince of Wales on Derbyshire Lane. Carfield school is a good one, Newfield( see topic on this) is not. Meersbrook Park is ok.Check out the secret Walled garden in the corner of Meersbrook Park. Fowler 27-10-2004, 01:52 PM I have just moved to Norton. The area is nice but 1 word of warning. If you use public transport this is not the place to move to. The number 20 is terrible!!!! DaBouncer 27-10-2004, 01:57 PM Originally posted by LittleWitch From what I've found on my house search, some of the houses at Norton Lees are leasehold, which is a situation not many buyers want to get into these days. I shouldn't worry about leasehold property. Our new house is leasehold and the ground rent is about £20 a year - nothing really when you think about it. My in-laws property at Whirlow is leasehold and has a ground rent of a whopping £5 a year. Leasehold is hardly anything these days. wibbles 27-10-2004, 02:25 PM Ha..mines £1.95 per annum. paddywac 27-10-2004, 03:42 PM Originally posted by Fowler The number 20 is terrible!!!! What, just in general? Fowler 27-10-2004, 05:46 PM They are Dire. Currently a petition is being arranged to be sent to the council. I work in the city centre for both my job (day and night). I have waited for up to 1hr 50 minutes in an evening for a supposed 30 minute service and up to 50 min in the mornin! Truly terrible. We have some great excuses thrown at us from the transport exec. From smashed windows to.............smashed windows! Once we phoned them up regarding 2 seperate buses each one supposedly had their windows broke. Emma83 29-10-2004, 03:39 PM just read about petition that has been recieved by the council for additional lighting on footpath at chessel close/norton lees lane. can anyone tell me anything about the pathway? any incidents that have taken place or generally orhwy it would particulary need more light? Funky Dave 30-10-2004, 01:23 PM The bus service in Norton Lees has always been a joke. When I lived there the buses were supposed to turn up every 20 minutes in the morning, but at least 2-3 times a week it wouldn't turn up and you'd have to wait for the next one. I'm annoyed to hear that it's still happening. marycrookes 30-10-2004, 09:04 PM The buses are about the only downside about living in Norton Lees, and the disgraceful cancellation of the 33, which were suppose to run every twenty minutes, only to be replaced by the number one which is only every hour only adds insult to injury. There's a lot of older people and disabled that live round about the Cross Sythes, how are they going to walk up and down Scarsdale Road If they can walk down to Woodseats to do a bit of shopping, it's impossible for them to walk back up, they try not to be of any inconvienience to anyone, and then the council do this, and this is the council that want to stop people using their cars, dream on, Jan Wilson this latest move of yours is sure to help. JonMMUK 05-11-2004, 03:06 PM I lived in Norton Lees for the first 26 years of my life - on Warminster Road - and I have to say I loved it there. I only moved out because my nan had died and I felt like I needed a "fresh start" somewhere else in Sheffield. The area's nice, good parks, the co-op, the bus service isn't THAT bad, and we were just on the snow line so we got a dusting but not enough to make it impossiblt to get to. Pubs: the Cross Scythes at the top of Scarsdale Road, the Sportsman on Warminster, the Prince of Wales on Derbyshire Lane, the Mount Pleasant a bit further up... Jon JonMMUK 05-11-2004, 03:07 PM Originally posted by Emma83 just read about petition that has been recieved by the council for additional lighting on footpath at chessel close/norton lees lane. can anyone tell me anything about the pathway? any incidents that have taken place or generally orhwy it would particulary need more light? It was just really dark... the bit at the end of the path on North Lees Lane/Angerford Avenue is cobbled and slopes down a bit, and I guess you might have problems if you couldn't see where it was going. I do remember a story from maybe 6-7 years ago about some woman getting attacked in there once, but I don't know any more about it than that. Jon Couljo 05-11-2004, 06:05 PM Saw a piece in today's Telegraph (5th November) that First have announced an increase in the service of bus number 2 along Derbyshire Lane every 30 mins Mon to Fri "during most of the day". Apparently this is due to residents pressure so good on you! jay_oscar 09-11-2004, 06:39 PM .................... muddycoffee 21-11-2004, 01:27 PM I live in woodseats, and sometimes we go up to norton lees to the Pubs, which are well worth a visit. The Prince of wales has a large garden at the back, a pool table which isn't usually busy, a good selection of drinks including real ale. And apart from the discusting wall paper is a nice place. The Mount pleasent is a smaller quieter pub, but with 2 rooms. It is popular with people who play golf, but nice atmos. Couljo 26-11-2004, 05:46 PM I've been really pleased with the comments made about this area as fingers crossed moving there in the New Year (if everything goes ok with our house sale/purchase). We are having our first baby in April and really wanted to settle somewhere we could be a family without too many worries about crime/safety etc but still commutable to town - thank goodness the bus situation seems to be improving! Does anyone know of anything in the area for new mums and babies? Cheers. espadrille 27-11-2004, 08:01 AM Yes. There is a playgroup that runs daily( I think ) in Meersbrook Park. There is also a playgroup at St Pauls Church. There are lots of groups for Mums round here. mine are 9 and 14 so I obviously dont need them now. I think that Norton Lees is underestimated by others living in slightly better areas. It is a relatively quiet respectable area and the people are neither rough or posh, just ordinary people who look after their property. I hope the bus service does improve and you will enjoy your life in Norton Lees. Couljo 29-11-2004, 11:18 AM Thanks, this is our view of the area too, can't wait to move now! uniB 02-12-2004, 01:02 AM Originally posted by jay_oscar the woman who owns the off-license is really freindly but shes selling it in a couple of months to someone else. That is sad news, it'll be sad to see her go, it's getting increasingly rare to experience generally friendly people in shops these days - she's always so friendly I choose to go there rather than other shops as I'd rather go somewhere where they make an effort to be friendly. And they do eight cans of Stones for a fiver Mr_Ned 10-01-2005, 12:49 AM Can i just thank everyone for their views. Moved and so far really enjoying it. Regards to the ? why are houses always going up for sale, easy, due t the property boom people are cashing in, A house exactly the same as mine, which i paid £110k for is now up for sale at £185k. To anyone thinking of moving up here, have no fears uniB 10-01-2005, 01:40 AM Heay Mr Ned, Glad you decided to join us! There do seem to be a lot of houses for sale at any one time up here, not sure why, maybe it's because it's quite a family area and the houses only have 3 bedrooms (generally), one of those being a tiny box room, so maybe people grow out of their houses and have to move on to bigger things. Just a guess. shelley1 14-01-2005, 10:04 PM When June sells the shop i hope we get someone as nice as she has been, she has been there for years and was there when i was at newfield school. Wish we had a pub just a bit nearer, oh well the walk does us good i suppose. I like living in this area. You are viewing an archive. To view the actual thread click here: Sheffield Forum | |
