Can anyone tell me what this means...

Mais ce volontarisme étatique a des effets pervers et contribue au repli sur ses bases de la culture française.

It's the part in italics I'm not sure about. Sounds a bit idiomatic to me...

...I thought it might mean it contributes to the collapse of French culture but I'm not too sure...

This is what Babelfish translates it as:

"But this official voluntarism has perverse effects and contributes to the fold on its bases of the French culture."

Not sure if this helps!

It's more the meaning I was after than a literal translation but thanks for trying!

Luckily for you, I am French but have lived in Sheffield for some years so my French can sometimes be a bit out of date. This phrase means:-

"Maisy ecstatically volunteered some effete perverts to contribute replies in basic french".

That of course is a literal translation. We would probably put it slightly differently in English.

I hope this helps, I am also available for German translations.

Wow! Thanks Ken.

Looks like I need to get myself a new dictionary. Mine's clearly not up to scratch...

I'll get back to you re the German translations.

'But this voluntary etatique of the perverse effects and contributes to the withdrawal on the basis of the French culture'

Hi Tartempion, I'm a French native and my guess is that the bit in italics means French culture is shutting itself off, becoming a bit of a recluse/outcast if it makes any sense. But I might be wrong. I sometimes find my own language hard to understand or explain!
PM me if you want.:)

yes but repli is from the verb se replier, which means to shut yourself off from the rest of the world/people.

Thanks for all your help! I think I've got the gist now.
