Nothing in Town or Hillsboro, I live at the bottom end of Loxley where it had settled a bit but the main roads are clear. I went along penistone road this morning and it's just raining.

Why does the snow disappear so quickly!

The snow in this country is so different to that in other countries, say for example the USA where I was this time last year. The snow over there is really hardcore compared to the watered down stuff we have here! (like everything else in the uk!) Over there the snow would stick to everything and anything! But over here it seems to be here one minute gone the next! Its so not fair! I like the snow, its great fun, just we never seem to get enough of it!

I'm sure there's a conspiricy theory in it somewhere! Like all the other countries who have lots of hardcore snow are watering down our snow so we have to take holidays abroad to enjoy some quality snow action! Or it could be the UK government doing it to stop us from having days off work due to snow!

I dont know what do you all think??

It's been the worst year for snow so far, in a long time.

Well I made it into town. I left myself an hour thinking the traffic might be bad but once you get past the co-op in Stocksbridge there really is no snow at all! It only took me 25 minutes! It's snowing a bit here in town but not sticking to anything apart from my hair.

I can imagine snake pass would be bad, its white over in Penistone melting slowly but only started at half past 7 there was nothing at 7am! Hills on top are white too :) How I love living here :D

Snake always has trouble with snow. This morning's snow was well forecast so why don't they have ploughs and gritters standing by to tackle it ?

We had about two inches above High Bradfield but it hasn't stopped the farmers getting feed out to their livestock.

1st) TV... Only Scotland and the East coast are going to get snow, inland it will be dry, sunny and cold

But then.....

2nd) Local Radio... We are going to get snow showers over the next few days.

I am 90% confident of a major snowfall event for us tomorrow night (Saturday) into Sunday. I am 50% risk of snow later tonight as the cold air begins to dig in. Its on a knives edge for tonight - could go either way.

Met Office are currently saying 50% for our region, but as I glance over the latest models, it would appear that the risk is growing.

My preditiction = 5 to 10 inches (certainly more than last time) and a heavy fall. (I could be wrong so please don't club me to death if I am).

This is the first warning of disruption due to Heavy Snow and Blizzards.
The Met Office is forecasting a period of heavier snow across many northern areas of the United Kingdom for a time over the weekend. The greatest risk of disruption will be focussed over higher ground where up to 15cm of snow could accumulate and drift in strong winds. At lower levels and across other parts of the country, the risk of disruption is much less. Milder air pushing in from the west will turn the snow to rain so any disruption will be transient.
There is some uncertainty with regards to the timing and amount of snow but the risk is considered high enough to issue an early warning for this event.

Going by the latest model run, much of Scotland, Wales, N/NW England and the Midlands could see 3-6 hours of moderate-heavy snow, with perhaps 6-12 hours over higher ground. Mainly for early hours Saturday night into Sunday. Again, its too early to say, but ped... further to your question, have a lazy morning by all means, but maybe play safe and head off the shops early afternoon? Although I cant say for certain it will be snowing by 6pm tomorrow night, I guess its better to be safe than sorry.

Update, expect widespread snowfall (in my opinion) for a good 4 to 6 hours, affecting (from worst affected) Wales, Cheshire, Staffordshire, Liverpool, Manchester, Lancashire, Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, East Yorkshire, Lincs, North Yorkshire. This also gives an indication as to the general movement of the front i.e from the west (yes, its an Atlantic system). The models are showing some of the best charts for very heavy accumulating snowfall for most of England, Wales & Scotland in a long time! It would appear now that touchdown will be overnight Saturday (tonight!) into Sunday. There is also a secondary risk of snow during Monday night and into Tuesday.

The situation is developing and changing all the time with regards to precipitation amounts and distribution - obviously this has a net affect on changing forecasts.

Certainly looks like a classic cold/warm air battle and one that could actually SERIOUSLY deliver. Could well be a bumpy ride.

lets hope so candy, but shall we say - the situation is still (pardon the pun) "fluid" at the moment as to the EXACT snowfall locations, although our chances are high for a considerable fall, others WILL probably fair better - the further west you are located, the better the results. If anyone has relatives in Lancashire, head over today, for a truley winter wonderland tomorrow! Wish I could be this certain for our region, but will update as the situation develops.

My prediction - note - incoming feature out west. White indicates areas to be affected - although this could be a "sweeping generalisation", note - we are still potentially "borderline".

It's a a battle between warm air coming in off the Atlantic and cold air pushing in from the continent - forecasters are now thinking the cold air might resist the warm air for a few days more.

Watch the 'Countryfile' forecast on BBC1 at around 11:45 am tomorrow for a detailed forecast...it could mean that any snow we get tonight/tomorrow could persist, - at least on high ground and there's another front coming in for Monday night/Tuesday morning which could give further snow.

Well, its been interesting watching the developments today. The band of precipitation (snow!) has been intensifying as it makes headway from the west. Currently its eastern edge is nudging the west coast and beginning to affect places from Glasgow area all the way south to Prestwick, Ayr, into the Cumbrian coast, and North Wales. The heavier stuff is just behind from the IOM to west Ireland. Its expected to pep up as it heads further towards us (east) and intensify further as it hits our pool of cool air. As it comes up against this air, its expected to stall, allowing for considerable accumulations. I expect the west to be badly hit (yes places west of here!) -affecting the likes of Manchester, Preston, Carlisle, Glasgow bearing the brunt with upto 2foot (certainly in hillier areas). For the rest of us - expect accumilations of approx half a foot to 1 foot (at a stretch) in places - especially over higher ground. Regarding this "stalling feature". Its still not understood where the front will stall, but I would expect the Pennines to act as a bit of a barrier - however, I could be wrong. MAY I STRESS that even though we will see snow, WE ARE STILL BORDERLINE as you will see from the graphic below. The white stuff being the heavier snowfall with the greyer matter being lighter.

Its important to understand that we are borderline (in terms of the greatest amounts of snow - which will fall to the west of us) - as others will come off worse.

I've included a graphic (from the met office radar at 17.30 today) which I have edited to show the extent of snowfall overnight tonight and into tomorrow.

Summary

Heavy snowfall for us but not as heavy as locations north and west of here.

Expect half foot to 1 foot (esp on higher ground)

Expect max 4 to 6 hours of snowfall

Expected Arrival (still difficult to judge but no later than 2am tonight) - as I mentioned above, the front is due to stall over the west of england.

Will become heavier as the front transits slowly from west to east - sunday AM will be additionally dicey.

I know loads of you enjoy reading my reports... I do hope this one is helpful and explains the scientific assumptions/hype which is being banded around weather news-land currently.

I am no expert - but whatever happens people - be careful out there...

It's started sticking on my street in Stocksbridge even though the ground was very wet to begin with. It's sometimes a bit deceptive up here though because I'm up a hill off the bus route. Sometimes when it's bad up here it's fine on the main road.

A good covering out here on the moors above Bradfield, roads are generally OK but the strong wind has blown the snow into drifts in places.

Lying snow in the fields is between 1 and 2 inches - still snowing and blowing but snow should die out in an hour or so. Temp hasn't been above zero since 8pm last night - currently -3.0°C !!

This year the government promised us ‘the worse winter on record,’ thanks in part to me spraying aerosols directly at the ozone at every waking moment – it never came. I believe that the government has failed in its duty to provide the type of snow that will at least get us all a longer weekend - it has! Do you all think it is a coincidence that all the snow that we have had, has fallen on the weekend when most of us are off and therefore less damaging to the economy? Global warming? It’s ****ing freezing!! I therefore propose that you join me in my Campaign for Real Snow or CAMRS.
CAMRS will campaign for the following
• Real thick snow that can kill the old
• Snow you are able to roll up into a big ball, stick a carrot in its face and wrap a scarf round its neck and give it a name until the local kids come into your garden and kick its head in out of jealousy and spite
• Snow that is so thick that it will close schools and bring the transport infrastructure to gridlock until the beginning of the summer holidays.
• Snow that will make skiing an option in meersbrook park and the luge the only way to get into town from Broomhill

Sorry for the slight delay in me updating. I have been outside building half a foot snowmen. I managed 3 before all the snow ran out. They must be the only people i know to have noses (carrots) longer than their bodies.

Well all, what can I say?...........Other than I have been devastated by the outcome of this snow event (come on, if we can really call it a snow event). At midnight last night, all the evidence I had suggested a decent fall through the night. However, as I watched events unfold and witnessed the "moisture" pep up - it simply never made it as far as west Manchester before simply fizzing out.

The Pennines were a big factor in protecting the transition of the front from west to east, along with our comparitivley cooler temperatures - saw a drying effect on the moist air. It wasnt until the sun came up and temps rose a little for the frontal activity to forward itself (in shame) over our way. As my first post of the morning stated.... GUTTED.

Grey is right though, looking forward, there is a still the possibilty of more snow this coming week. A similar scenario with a band of rain coming in from the west, possibly turning to snow as it heads our way (but I feel that by this time we will be a bit on the warm side). ETA for snow possibly Tuesday.

Our second chance does come from Wednesday onwards when winds turn north-easterly and could drive wintry showers inland.

I got so sick of the GD snow, I hopped on a plane last week and came down to Florida, where I now am working on a relative's PC. It's 80 F outside, and I decided to have a little gloat at my son back in frozen Connecticut. He told me it was 70 back there. Curses, foiled again.
Still I got to visit the Kennedy Space Center, and Daytona for bike week. He didn't.

I felt very hurt indeed when I read that Minimich wants to polish us owld 'uns off with a dollop of snow .
Haven't we suffered enough over the years ? Up to our necks in muck and bullets during the '39-'45 caper ; survived Stafford Cripps , Eden , Michael Foot , Thatcher and the threat of nuclear wars ; reeling with shock when we get the gas bill , electricity bill , water bill , insurance bills , Council Tax bill and final demand letters for things we never had .
Heart attacks and dizzy spells when we switch on T.V and see Big Brother , by accident . Minimich , haven't we suffered enough or are you completely heartless ?

Speak for yourself :D - I still enjoy the snow and the cold weather. It hasn't been above freezing here since Saturday morning and we still have most of the snow that fell on Sunday. Temp is currently minus 1°C and windchill (how cold it feels) is minus 4°C so the snow that arrives over the next 24 hours will certainly stick.

But snow and frost in March is a nuisance if you're into gardening and I'm having to feed the birds pretty frequently, poor little sods should be thinking about nest building but they've all on just to stay alive in this weather. Sadly for them, and expensively for me, it's going to get even colder towards the end of the week with the likelyhood of yet more snow.

Anyway I'm sure you get plenty of snow in China ?

Looks like most of the rain and snow is moving north east.During the night and in the morning there may be the odd bit of snow but no probs on the roads.The rest of the week looks cold with an easterly wind with the odd wintry shower

Last saw snow in 1987 in the Snowy Mountains, Australia and its going to cost me about 5000 quid to see it again this year for a week. You lot don't know how lucky you are all that white stuff every year for free. It is also snowing ere in Dinnington at the moment not very heavy just very fine but is slightly settling but dont think it will last.
