View Full Version : Football Play offs - Are they fair?
Our beloved Sheffield United face Nottingham Forest in the play offs this weekend.
Are they fair?
The Blades finished 3rd this year and potentially a team that has finished 6th in the league could go into the Premier League.
Personally I think they are good, but its going to be unfortunate for the Blades this year if they miss out.
Come on Blades

Michael_W 09-05-2003, 16:50 The team that finishes 3rd mikey, often misses out, but that's the play offs for you, 'Fair' no and have never been. Rumour is the number of clubs qualifying for a play off position is going to be increased and so will become even more unfair in the future, personally I think it makes a mockery of the (league) system and is purely a money spinning exercise.

I agree mate... should be the top few teams in the play off! None of this 6th place poop. If you're not good enough to finish in the top 3 then you dont get the chance to go into the premiership!
It would be a lot simpler if bottom 3 go down and top 3 go up! Sorted!
Michael_W 09-05-2003, 16:58 Having said that, if the Owls finish 8th in the 2nd Division next season and get promoted via the play offs I won't be complaining !
Come on Wednesday !

HAHA good luck... with your manager selling off 8 playesr already and the rest wanting out, cos lets face it who wants to be in a div 2 team when you've played premiership and div 1? You guys will see Div 3 before you see div 1 again!
I ain't complaining, my team finished 2nd :) , and last time we were in the premier we made it through the play-offs. I'm still mad about those comments Warnock made about us though, but I'd still like united to go up.
Michael_W 09-05-2003, 17:21 Turner knows the score and he'll build a squad with the 2nd Division in mind, I have faith in Turners judgement more players will come and go at Hillsborough before next season.
BTW - I reckon Wolves turn for promotion ! Sorry Lads !

Me too actually! I fancy the Wolves for Premiership.... I'd love my beloved United to make it... but I don't see it myself!

If United don't go up. I wouldn't mind seeing Wolves go up myself. I think they deserve a crack at it. They are like Birmingham were, always in the play offs each year but just missing out.
I don't think Wolves will go up. They can never get through the play-offs. I think they must be jinxed.
RobynBlade 10-05-2003, 22:14 Our beloved blades have done us proud this season, and even if they dont win the play-off race well no in our hearts it was well deserved, all we can do is carry on giving the superb support we have given all season, its up to us. COME ON U BLADES! We played well 2dy at the city ground, lets just hope to see a victory at Bramall Lane
If Blades do not make it to Cardiff, i would like to see Reading make it to the premiership - as they have done well and have not been in the premiership - plus its further to travel 4 an away game!
I don't think that they are fair at all, even more so now that a team finishing in 8th place could still gain promotion. I would rather see whoever finishes in 3rd place play whoever finishes 3rd from bottom in the league above for the right to stay in the higher league.
Michael_W 11-05-2003, 19:25 I agree Lickszz, when the play offs were first introduced back in the 80s, the format was, third from bottom versus third from top, then the football league powers realised what a money spinner the current format would be !
Play offs do generate excitement but if my team finished 3rd and 12 points in front of the next club and we failed to win in the play offs I'd no doubt think it was unfair. I recall Sunderland were promoted 26 points behind league champions Newcastle, and 12 points behind 3rd place club Reading. They were relegated the next year though...! The consistent quality of the team was proved to be lacking, the 12 points difference infact tipped the balance.
part-timer 16-05-2003, 01:23 Yes they are fair and here is why.
If you take a look at the top 6 (or even 8) you will probably find the best teams are not always the top3 (except this season). It allows for problems with injuries as most clubs in div1 do not have the money for a massive squad (and quality too). It also allows for cup runs which can take their toll (but not for Blades).
It also gives an end of season financial boost to all involved and drags a few more games of football onto the t.v. before 3 months of hell.
Finally it allows for a lucky team to get promoted when they don't deserve it and that means the current Premiership clubs are more likely to stay there.
However if we lose to Wolves I will change my mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just had to bring this to the top, to get everyone a little bit more excited b4 the weekend.
Come on Blades win it for Sheffield, and then we can decide if they are fair.
As a wednesday fan all i can say to the Blade Fans on this day is your team picked the wrong time to play rubbish. The second half was better but not much. oh well who wanted to go to Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal ,Newcastle :?
did anyone notice that united played better when warnock wasnt on the touchline...

Ha ha I loved that day when you lost to Wolves at the time. I'm sure United fans aren't thinking the same as RPG now.
