View Full Version : Is this the dearest chippy in Sheffield?
Draggletail 10-03-2006, 15:19 Whilst working up at Totley Rise the other day, I popped into The Abbey Friar on Baslow Rd for chips and curry sauce (on a tray, open) :)
My mouth almost dropped into a gaping stance when the assistant asked for £1.75 :o
I paid up and on my way out noticed that the haddock/large cod were priced up at £3.
Does this sound like the dearest chippy in Sheffield, or do you know of another?
EDIT 23/11/2007 - just to point out, this was first posted 20 months ago, an as such £3 now may not be unreasonable for a fish - just that one or two people don't realise it's and old post and think I'm mean :D
fish for £3.00 is alright, but chips & curry sauce @ nearly £2.00!
thats a £1.20 at the most
Did you get a choice of curries ?
youwhatref 10-03-2006, 15:38 It's on the higher side but not OTT. I know the Admirals out in Frecheville, Beighton and Mosborough you'd be paying £1.60 for it and the fish are £3. Nice big fish though and the chippys are always busy.
Draggletail 10-03-2006, 15:53 Did you get a choice of curries ?
Forgot to mention nick2, the curry sauce was watery and very bland :(
I was in a chippy in Swallownest t'other day, and they wanted £3 for Scampi plus about a quid for the chips.. What the hell?!
Good job I wasn't bothered about fish and chip lunch and bought a cheese sandwich from the Co Op.
cgksheff 10-03-2006, 16:11 Just goes to confirm that a lot of you need to get out more! :hihi:
If a large piece of fish (I do say "large") comes in at less than £3, you should not eat it.
£3 for Small Fish & Chips is acceptable. I no longer expect to pay anything less.
Go down the fish market and see what a piece of wet fish costs and then understand that someone has to make a living out of using premises, hiring staff, buying ingredients and paying bills.
A good chippy can make a good living, but it is hard work and many have tried and failed.
.... Oh and by the way, thank the EU and our wimps in government for stuffing up our control of fish stocks!:)
Sarah1982 10-03-2006, 17:54 To be fair it is a good chippy though, think pretty much everywheres about £3 for Cod/ Haddock etc its the new salmon...
Nowt better than Manor Top chippie, not sure of the cost but worth every penny, even the scraps!
yorkiepudd 10-03-2006, 18:18 Got to agree with the Manor - would get a special from there (with curry sauce included) for less than that.
As regards the Admiral(s) I used to go out of my way to buy from them, but they have gone well down hill over the last year. They have got loads of eastern european looking chaps working there and (no disrespect to them personally BUT) they just don't have a clue how to cook fish and chips properly.
poucinet 10-03-2006, 19:21 £3.50 for cod/haddock in Dinnington excluding chips
When I was driving I used to know all the best chipies and sandwich shops. I always gave Abbey Frier a miss because of the price.
A large fish and portion of chips is £2.80 at my local chippy.
It's well known though that it's a waste of money as it's in one end and out the other all within the space of half an hour :gag: I'd much rather pay more and have a decent fish.

I totally agree I nipped in there the other night for some fish & chips for me and the better half, never again!
The dog ended up with most of it, he's a Labrador so not to discerning.
bjshooter 10-03-2006, 23:18 Nowt better than Manor Top chippie, not sure of the cost but worth every penny, even the scraps!
Yep that chippie is gooood and fairly cheap:)
bhunaboy 10-03-2006, 23:35 Manor Top!!!!!!!!!!! ****E!
I live 5 mins away and had em today and, tasteless pap.
£2.45 for small chips peas and roe, fish is crap too.
Go the extra mile to Richmond. You will apreciate it!
When it was becketts is was marvellous, but it's now living on former reputation.
Isn't there somthing else I should be doing???
SHANE-D-PAIN 10-03-2006, 23:37 I usually expect a portion of Chips to cost £1 to £1.50, seems pretty fair if they are decent chips.
Fish usually costs £3 - £4, never seen it for any less.
I think £1.75 is about normal for Chips and Curry Sauce these days.
thes_cat_man 11-03-2006, 15:26 How much for fish and chips?
sod it im off to Mcdonalds for the £ saver menu!!
maggyirene 12-03-2006, 00:51 nooooo wayyyyyy would rather have fish and chips anyday fills u up more than mac crap
How about taking it all in context...
Just look at what you get at Macdonalds or a similar place - For around £4 you get a miniscule amount of fries and a squashed burger.
Now do fish n chips sound so expensive?

This is my Local Chippy.
The fish is very very small for the price, however the chippy up at Dore village is around the same price, the owners must think that we are all on £5000000000 a year.

Richmond chippie is never open though.
This is my Local Chippy. Best Chip Shop is Taplin Chippy @ Hillsborough
Been there, it's excellent.
bhunaboy 14-03-2006, 19:49 Richmond chippie is never open though.
I know! And they dont bother with kebabs neither. Just like 'proper' chippies back in t'day!
If they could still wrap em in yesterdays papers they would, I tells ya!

It's an 'age' thing. I can remember when a fish was a tanner and a portion of chips thruppence ;)

...And you could have a good night out at pub, sup seventeen pints, fish 'n' chip supper ont' way 'ome and still have change from a florin, eh Greybeard :D
Best Chip Shop is Taplin Chippy @ Hillsborough
I think we may be spoilt in Hillsborough! Everyone loves the Taplin Chippy, and the Supper Spot on Loxley Road is right nice as well. Still - at 2am nothing tops a Chatanoga Pizza!

There is also the Chippy on Holme Lane across from the old tram sheds that has very large fish.
crookesey 15-03-2006, 09:19 The Totley chip shop is my local, tried it a couple of times and found the quality poor and overpriced.
The one near Banner Cross traffic lights is first class, cod & chips under £3.00, the one on London Road accross from Harrisons camera shop is also good quality and great value.
Taplin chippy in Hillsborough??? Are you all head mental?? Its maybe the worst chippy Ive ever been to.
Unless you like grease for dinner. :gag:
The one on holme lane is far better.
crookesey 15-03-2006, 10:52 It's an 'age' thing. I can remember when a fish was a tanner and a portion of chips thruppence ;)
How much was a pint then? We can then work out the cost of your night out based on you drinking 17 pints.

I understand it has recently been took over?
I now go to the one on Holme Lane across from the old tram sheads

Nah!....that would have cost you ten bob, - if you include the ten woodbines ;)

Dunno - I was too young to drink. But you're never too young for fish'n'chips :D
Owdlad might remember how much a pint was in the 1940s :hihi:

Since you last visited Draggtail the price has shot up :suspect:, They no longer do large cod's/haddocks , and small fish in now £3.10p:mad: and the chips are around £1.20 , I rarely go in unless I have too, I wonder who owns these chip shops
£3.50 for cod/haddock in Dinnington excluding chips
Which chippys that then? You can get 2 x large fish, one large chips and large peas for £7.50 at the one on Lidgett Lane?
Ive seen a portion of chips exceeding £1 ont board - not prepared to say where.
ArtfulDodger 22-11-2007, 17:22 Why would anyone want to eat it?
ArtfulDodger 22-11-2007, 17:24 Let alone pay for it??
ArtfulDodger 22-11-2007, 17:29 How about 'which is the BEST chippy in Sheffield' as an alternate thread; 'cheapest' seems to be a pathetic determining factor.

I'm working up that way next week, I'll peer through the window to see how much the curry and chips has gone up :D
The best deal I know of (and it's great quality too) is The Admiral at Crookes - they do a lunchtime special for £1.90 - you get small fish, chips, a choice of curry, peas or beans, a sausage (or a rissole if you prefer)
Bootiful :)
I was in a chippy in Swallownest t'other day, and they wanted £3 for Scampi plus about a quid for the chips.. What the hell?!
Good job I wasn't bothered about fish and chip lunch and bought a cheese sandwich from the Co Op.
I have stopped buying scampi from chip shops after I was charged what worked out at 25p (Thats 5 shillings in real propper money) per piece of scampi.
I bought a bag of good quality scampi and oven chips from a supermarket they are in the freezer I use them when I need them and its a lot cheaper

Go and work on a Trawler then I bet you wont mind paying £3 for a piece of fish, I've paid up to £5 for fish n chips.
Fish prices have risen sharply recently. I bought some cod a couple of weeks ago and it cost more than steak. I think chippys are having a hard time and to help stay in business they have raised the price of chips.
Problem is I can't find a decent chippy. Every time I buy chips out they are terrible. Last time I did this I bought chips from the Devonshire Chippy in the city centre. They were so bad I threw them away. I then went to the shop, bought a bag of potatoes and some veg oil and made my own. They tasted so much better.
So if someone can tell me the name and location of a decent chippy in the city centre I will give it a try.
I don't care of they are expensive as long as they are a quality product. I hate shoddy goods and service.

Sorry but its not in the city centre but used to be a great chippy its Tony's in mosborough near the fire station, nice thick steaks of COD, dont know if its still there though.
IluvStaffys 22-11-2007, 18:57 I have tried most chippy's in sheffield, Baracuda on Duke st (city road) used to be the best chippy, but like the rest it was took over by a family from cyprus, and it went down hill not long after.
The best chippy i go to is the flying fish on sicey Ave, the food is very nice and well presented. Ive never really bought anythin, and had to throw it away.
The chippy on fulwood rd next to the Ranmoor inn is ok
They do mini fish dinners for 2 quid, and there nice
Fish and chips are so cheap anyway, does it really matter if it comes to £3, £3.50, £3.35, etc?

handypandy 22-11-2007, 19:35 A couple of good chippies for you:
Tony's in Mosborough village( on the back wack, NOT the dreaded Admiral). Fish is fresh every day and you can tell!
Surprisingly, the pokey little one on Wolsey Rd opposite the new mosque. Its run by a Pakistani gentleman and his fish and chips are spot on.
My mate once went in to a chippy and asked for two chicken legs open. But he is a strange bloke
yorkie75 22-11-2007, 19:52 My mate once went in to a chippy and asked for two chicken legs open. But he is a strange bloke
Have you ever tried a leg of liver???

Oh, my original thread is 20 months old - exmrbd dug it up - three quid for a fish might be a better deal now, but The Admiral at Crookes do a lunchtime special for £1.90 - you get small fish, chips, a choice of curry, peas or beans, a sausage (or a rissole if you prefer) what can I say, other than the well of residents at Totley are paying accordingly for where they live (nothing to do with the trawler men getting a fairer wage) are you an ex trawlerman BTW? You must be if you paid £5 for take out fish and chips :P (which is what the thread is about)
Vinegar, anyone? :hihi:
My son lives in Margate and there is a chain of fish and chip shops throughout Thanet that do Saithe (whatever that is) and Chips for £1.75. Big portions of both fish and chips.....and very tasty. And when we buy then from Margate or Ramsgate it's just a two minute walk and we can eat them on the beach looking at the sea. :D
There is definitely a dearth of good chippys in this city.
I remember Richmond from visits to my Nan as a child. Used to have fish and chips every Saturday in front of Grandstand. It was lovely but I haven't been there in about 15 years.
In Chapeltown, they all seem to be owned by the same person (Chapeltown Fish Bar on Station Road, the new Ocean Blue on Burncross Road and the one across the M1 in Thorpe Hesley) and while the fish isn't bad (it's not great either) they really don't know how to cook chips. They're always greasy and soggy.
The best one in the North of Sheffield that I've found, is LesAls at High Green. Marishells at Ecclesfield isn't bad either but their chip portions are tiny.
hagardriley 23-11-2007, 00:24 Marishells at Ecclesfield isn't bad either but their chip portions are tiny.
The other one at ecclesfield, on the shopping centre down the road from Marishells, is many times better value and much better tasting too. One of the best around Sheffield IMO.
Never been to that one - will give it a try.
try eating more cabbage its cheaper and you wont join the large peoples society.and expect to be burdened out when you pop.
mattfjohnson 23-11-2007, 11:29 This thread is making me really want to buy fish&chips now. I'm so hungry. When I first saw the thread I thought to myself, £3 is pretty cheap as I saw a fish was about £3.50+ in Sharrow the other day and add chips to that at £1,20+ and you're topping a fiver. Then I saw it was posted in 2005. It just goes to show how cost of living is spiraling upwards. e.g. cinema £6.40, petrol £1+, bread £1.80
Have you had a 15% pay rise since 2005 to cope with this rise in cost of living? Cos I haven't. But then I'm not a civil servent and can't go on strike every 2 mins if I don't get my regular pay increase ;) (await torrents of abuse)
I like fish&chips as much as the next man but to be honest the tought (or smell) of it is usually better then the actual event. You'd be better off going to one of these 2-4-1 pubs with a friend and getting a full meal with cutlery and sauces :) for a fiver. Can I suggest the Porter Brook on Eccy Rd. Fantastic deal of 2 main courses for £8. Hmmmm, Steak&Ale pie...

That's my local :)
We had dinner there the other Sunday for the first time in years, and to be honest I was surprised how good the quality of the food was, especially at that price.
Having said that, we went for a 'two for the price of one' at the pub down the hill from Owler Bar roundabout, it was horrible.
Plus all the menu's were coated in grease :gag:
In the Porter Brook, you see them cleaning the menus both sides every night.
zongamin 23-11-2007, 12:10 Seems like a reasonable price to me - come on its not 1930.
Got to agree with the Manor - would get a special from there (with curry sauce included) for less than that.
As regards the Admiral(s) I used to go out of my way to buy from them, but they have gone well down hill over the last year. I got large chips from there for £1.25, was not large by anyone's imagination. Struggled to share them between me and my son (who usually has about ten as he's not too fond of them). I go to the admiral and can get enough for 2 adults and my son for less.
Draggletail 23-11-2007, 12:50 Seems like a reasonable price to me - come on its not 1930.
As pointed out earlier, the original post is twenty months old and has resurfaced :)
£3 for a fish is pretty much to be expected now :)
