hi there
looking to lose some of my lardiness and wanting to join a gym in the Sharrow area (i live near the General Cemetery). I am female, 35 years old, i like to use the gym, swim ocasionally (but this is not essential). I want to do gentle classses esp yoga and pilates. i did look at the Hallam uni gym but they hardly do any classes there, and only 1 yoga a week. i am not into gyms that are macho and competitive, full of people with their veins bulging out, or pretentious people admiring themself in the mirrors! And i don't want to be plagued by kids.
I have heard the Virgin Active club recommended, but then Greens is within walking distance of my house. i work in the city centre so that's a possibility too. i don't want to spend a fortune but I can't do off-peak.
Any advice / experiences welcome. Thanks so much :)

I use Esporta which contry to popular belief is not pretetious but very friendly and the classes are free well the ones i use are.

It is however not cheap but it is still good value for me as i use it several times a week.

I have had nothig but good reports abut Greens by all accounts it is a really good gym with not to many kids.

Kids are not allowed in the gym area at esporta and the opening hours are great 6.30-10 pm in the week and open till 10 pm on sat sun too.

I have heard Virgin is a great gym but gets very busy and is full of kids so for me i would avoid it.

Esporta is really quet i have been the only person in the gym/pool on more than one occasion.

Hi, I'm a member of greens and I think they are good value for money. I'm not sure how much it would cost you but I think it would be cheaper than esporta and virgin (don't quote me on this).

They have lots of classes both peak and off-peak as well as a separate womens/beginners gym. You should take a look around. I found the people that do the membership are not pushy at all.

I use Greens near the Waitrose, at the bottom of Eccie road. It's got a good pool, ladies only area, lots of classes, they maintain it well. If you pick your time right it's quite quiet, there's no trouble finding a free machine to use. It's 40-odd quid a month for peak membership, I don't know how that compares to other places.

There's a few posers and machine hoggers, but only in the weights area. I saw one bloke take his shirt to admire himself once in the mirror, he stood there flexing himself. if you can laugh at people like that you're alright there. Guess you get them everywhere.
