Mornin' Vicar. Does anyone use one of those internet sites for renting DVDs?

I mean the ones where you pay a set monthly fee, and then creat a list of DVDs you want to rent, and then they're sent out to you in order - you get each DVD sent to you after you've returned the previous one.

There seem to be so many companies offering this service and I wondered if anyone could recommend one.

Another vote for Screen Select.
I did the Sunday Times 1 month free trial and got through 20 disks. One failed to arrive, lost in the post - no problem, tell them and they send another. A few were scratched, one or two to the point of being unusable but they sent replacements and with 3 in hand the distress of a scratched one isn't that bad. For 15 quid a month you get 3 DVDs sent in the post, keep each as long as you like then return (individually) in prepaid envelope and they send another. You can even pre-order stuff that's still in the cinemas. 19,000 titles stocked (up from 17,500 when I joined 6 weeks ago). I'm happy to pay at least until I've worked my way through the list of ones I want to see. Cheaper than renting one or two a week at Blockbuster and without the "when's it due back" stress , no need to go to the shop and the enormous range includes disks you might find difficult to source elsewhere. Not even worth running a DVD copier, if you want to see one again just borrow it again.

Just wondering if any other Screenselect customers have noticed a considerable slow-down in service recently? It's taking them at least an extra day to post out DVDs of late, which obviously means I'm getting much less value for money, so I'm not very happy.

I got 12 free lovefilm rentals with something I bought recently.

They seem pretty good. Might continue to subscribe after the trial. Beats going down to blockbuster everytime you want to watch something.

Hiya!

I use LOVEFiLM www.lovefilm.com and personally I think they are better than the rest!
They send your 3 new dvds out pratically sraight away!
There are no late fees so you can keep the same 3 dvds for as long as you want.
You never get any nasty or demanding emails or letters through the post.
Too be honest they are pretty chilled and relaxed and just let you enjoy your viewing pleasure.

Do they send out new DVDs as soon as you return the old ones? And do they send out DVDs on Saturdays? I'm thinking of switching over to them.

Yes, they send out DVD's pretty much as soon as you post the ones you already have.
They also post out on Saturdays!

I've just recently signed up with tesco and i'm more than happy with them so far. they've got a great selection (20000 titles) and they offer very good value for money (currently £13.97 for 3 titles at home).

ive just cancelled my contract with screen select after 1 or 2 months...cant remember which... send dvds quickly, have a pretty good selection. but getting the newest releases has become impossible for me... i had van helsing top of my list since its release day...and ive STILL not got it.. along with 5 other new releases....rubbish!

i will have a think .... maybe go to that lovefilm one.

you can actually get about a year free if you switch between the promo offers....if you can be bothered to do that.

Been using Mailbox Movies for about 18 months and not had a problem.

The odd dirty disc that I have had has been replaced as soon as I've emailed them plus an extra one aswell for the trouble.

Loads of different Subscription levels to suit everyone. They do the Unlimited (No limits, As soon as you return they send) 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 discs at a time. 1 discs under a tenner, 5s under £25.
They also do a cheaper (Limited) subscription. I beleive they do 2 or 3 discs at a time but your limited to how many you get per month. They even do a Pay per DVD offer.

Don't usually go round praising companies but Mailbox Movies deserve it.

What's the quickest anyone has had a new release from any of these services? We recently signed on with Screenselect but the new releases are not forthcoming even though we have prioritised a few.

We've had no problems otherwise and it's definitely more economical than using the shop down the road at the rate get through them.

My advice is to stick with one service for a few months, after which time it will start becoming slow in terms of turn-around time, low priority discs etc - the rationale being that you then become "their" customer, and as such are unlikely to cancel.

So, cancel!

Go somewhere else, and in the beginning you'll once again get good service initially. After a few months, cancel and go somewhere else...

One particular advantage of doing this is that the company you've cancelled with will periodically offer you an incentives (two months for the price of one, for example). In addition, signing up with a new company usually gives you at least a couple of weeks free straight away.

Overall, I've found LoveFilm to be the best rental company.

Tsk, tsk - ;)

The only problem I found with them, is the packaging can get damaged easily.

If you fancy staying with them, then we can both get discount - Craig recommended me, and we both got discount. :)

Anyone having problems with Lovefilm lately?

I recently bumped my membership up to Unlimited/3 (Three films at a time, unlimited rentals per month).

I then found out that, despite 50-60% of my queue being available (Fasttrak), I was only being sent one a day.

I'm apparently a 'High user' as I watch the DVD within a day or two before returning it, and I'm being penalised under their fair-use policy.

The Tariff is still being touted as being 'Unlimited' though.
My referrals have also started complaining that they go days without being sent new DVDs, despite having 20-30 in their queues. Seems to have started happening around the time they took on Webflix's user base.

I reckon they're over-subscribed.

angrybal
15-09-2005, 10:59
what does the high user mean - I've never heard of that and we have a quick turnaround on our discs. Does that mean they'll start slowing down?

I had a gap of about 4 days recently but that is it

Here's an example of my usage.

They send a DVD that lands on my mat on Monday morning.
I watch the DVD on Monday evening.
I send the DVD back on Tuesday.
They receive it on Wednesday and send me the next available DVD

I had no problems with this - It worked fine.

When I bumped up my tariff to Unlimited/3 (paying an extra £5 a month for the privilege) with the same viewing throughput, all of a sudden I'm a 'high-user' as per section 8.3 of their T+Cs.

They have had a fire mate in their warehouse, you should have a message when you log into your account.

They are sorting out compensation as we speak!

Also in regards to people not receiving the newest titles fast as well- there is a little tip to it...

When you see the title you want on the coming soon section, reserve it there and then- the quicker you do it to it going on the section, the quicker you will receive the dvd.
I get the newest titles, on the day they come out in blockbuster or in the shops using this trick :)

Only thing that puts me off somewhat from signing up for one of these, is unfortunately I trust postmen as far as I could throw them...

Meaning that I've had stuff go missing in the post before, so I'd be wary of signing up for something that would involve posting stuff regularly cos I don't know what the Ts&Cs state would happen if you were sending something back and it went "walkies" in the post.

I ended up cancelling my SS subscription, as I didn't watch enough, and being tight - I didn't want £8 to constanly debit my account for no reason.

Mailbox movies are now Screen Select and Webflix are now Lovefilm. These two giants seem to own many of the online rental companies now. Tesco are also powered by the same people as Screen Select so if you've had a free trial with Screen Select you can't get another one from Tesco.

I use Amazon. I pay £5.99 for 3 discs per month. It's handy if you don't watch that many and can't justify spending upwards of £13/month. Still works out cheaper than going to Blockbuster (which is miles away from me anyway).

Rich
26-01-2006, 17:43
Yeah, I'm half tempted to use Amazon's service.. Ruddy Choices video in Hillsborough never have any of the films I want in...

What I'm really after though is somewhere good and cheap that rents Xbox 360 games out, Choices only do last-gen Xbox games rentals... And I can't be arsed to go all the way up to S5 to Blockbuster at Halifax Road.

I actually tried all their free trials, I stuck with WHSMITH (lovefilm) for ages and then moved on and I felt they were all slowing down with sending films out. Also had quite a few lost in the post but you just have to fill out the letter from the post office and everythings fine.

I use amazon rental and couldn't recommend it enough! Have been sent my top selections most times.

i have been sent dvds that have been scratched and if its been a problem playing them but sorta watchable (like keeps skipping abit) you can either just let them know, let them know and and they send a replacement or let them know and they allow you another dvd a month for free for the inconvience, which is very nice! you can select how many you want a month and can have more than one home at a time depending on which option you choose and many a time they've let me have more dvds a month than i should have had - dont know why!

Dont know if anyone has mentioned this already as I haven't read all the posts, but www.amazon.co.uk now provide a rental service, starting at £4.99 a month for 2 DVDs.

I haven't tried them yet, but will leave feedback when I have.

I use Blockbuster online and I'm very happy with them. I used to just use the Blockbuster shop on Ecclesall Road, but to walk there and back is a one hour round trip from my flat, so I switched to the online service.

The only problem that I've had with them so far is that I ordered "Training Day" and they sent me "Curb your Enthusiasm" series 3. I didn't mind though as I watched it all and found it very funny.

If you're the sort of person who's impulsive when it comes to renting DVDs, i.e. one night you suddenly decide that you want to watch a film, and you go to the shop with no idea of what you want to see, then online DVD rentals are not for you. However if you're the sort of person who's quite methodical and has a list of films they want to see, it's ideal. Blockbuster has a list system, where you search their database for the film you want and then add it to your list (I presume others are the same too). This is useful because if I'm at work and remember a film I'd like to see, I just nip onto the Blockbuster site and add it to my list.

:)

I have been using LoveFilm for nearly two years and cannot fault the responsiveness of the service (I suppose the much maligned Royal Mail should take some credit). It is rare that the new disc doesn't arrive in 48 hours, i have also never had a disc lost or stolen.

The one slight frustration is that the priority listing doesn't seem to work particularly well e.g "Crash" has been at the top of my wish list for nearly two months. Yet to receive it although over the same period i have received at least a dozen other items which were well down the list. This morning I received a foreign film which was somewhere between 15-20th on my list.

Yea thats the problem im having with blockbuster online too. It was good when we first signed up probably because not many people were with them yet.

Might have a look at amazon...
