Sale Memorial was stated as the place of residence of Rosetta Marsden on the Marriage Certificate for her and Reuben Beard on 20 November 1898 at St Jude's Church, Eldon, Sheffield. Does anyone know where Sale Memorial was, and what it was?

Sale Memorial was a C of E on South Street (city side) in the Park District. I think the church school rooms were behind the church but because of the steepness of the property, you could see the church from town over the top of them. The school was actually on Granville Street (where the super tram runs now).

It was badly damaged during the blitz, although the spire was still standing, and never repaired. The ruin just sat there for years until that at part of Parkhill was redeveloped and the whole hill side landscaped.

I seem to recollect that the church was dedicated to a Saint athough most people in the Park refered to it as "Sale Memorial", its secondary title. Believe that Dr. Sale was some prominent memember of the C of E clergy in Sheffield but can't remember when.

The Church in question was called St. Luke's, Dyer's Hill, Park, Sheffield, built 1879 closed December 1940. Never heard it referred to as Sale Memorial.

St Luke's Dyer's Hill on South Street did indeed become Sale Memorial Church. I have come across it a couple of times as part of my family history research.

I was trying to get hold of a picture of it but have had no luck. :(

on picture Sheffield's site, there is a picture of the Midland Railway Station, looking up toward the Sheffield-Park district...

(hope this link works)

http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=s15298

there's a very distinct church building on this photo, in about the position that I assume the church concerned might have been...

(I know it cannot be St John's on Hyde park, as
a- it's far, far too close to the railway station, and
b- the spire is at the "wrong" end - i used to go to st John's)

I hope that helps.

Thank you, PT, that is St Luke's, it says so in the description :). Thanks ever so much. I didn't know about that website. It could prove very useful indeed for the family history.

An independent source has also advised me today that Sale Memorial Church refers to St Luke's Church at Dyer's Hill. I assume that Rosetta Marsden lived close to the church before she was married. Within a matter of weeks after the marriage she was known to be living at 4 Court 3 House Lord Street, Park. Thanks for all the help.

Lords Street, together with Norwich Street were two of the better known streets on that part of Parkhill, close to Sale Memorial Church. Where the Parkhill flats are now.

The Park Corp of the Salvation Army was on Lord Street, I think, before they moved over to the end of Bernard Street.
