View Full Version : What pets can you have with cats?

I know a lot of people on here are complete cat nuts like me, so do any of you know what pets are safe to have with cats? Mine are quite young, about a year.

I'd like to have a guinea pig or a chinchilla but I don't know if they would be safe around cats, I wouldn't want any of them to be distressed.

And before you suggest dogs I works so I can't have one of them either, only 38 years till I retire and then I'll have hundreds of the things. :)

Anyway, I'd love to hear your suggestions.

Thanks

Dogs, especially large dogs, understand cats as long as they are introduced properly. They are particularly patient with kittens.

We took on an ex-shelter cat and our dogs - a mature German Shepherd dog and a young Rhodesian Ridgeback bitch - soon accepted the cat, not only as a housemate, but very clearly as the boss about the place!

I'm working outside Sheffield at the mo, but when I come back if I'm near home I might consider a dog, but I'd feel too guilty if the dog was stuck in on its own, I don't think it's fair to get a dog unless you have a lot of time to give to it.

I used to volunteer at Battersea dogs home so I'm doubly cautious about anything to do with dogs, I've seen too many people who in totally good faith have bought dogs but their circumstances have changed a year down the line and they'd had to give them up which was heartbreaking from all sides.

Fuzzy, me and the old man hope to try out the kids a bit down the line but we want to have something more civilised that gets toilet trained in less than 2 years to set them a good example. After all, I've never seen a chinchilla mincing around with huggies and kandoo wipes.

Chinchillas are naturally scared of cats so not a good idea I am afraid.

At that particular moment it was sat in the middle, in the open, eating a sunflower seed. Calm as you like. It was so used to the cats.

no other small animals are safe as such

although we have a cat AND rats, the rats are never near the cat.........mainly cos they can smell the cat and go nuts.
i dont think the cats bothered anyway, it never goes peering around the ratcage

I've had rats while keeping cats and have just got 3 gerbils. I've never tried having both out at the same time, but they have access to the cages. My cats tend to show interest for the first couple of days then get bored when they can't get to them

Saxon's photo reminded me of one I took a while back - it's the best I have but we've had up to five at a time poking at his cage :) http://www.olliekitten.co.uk/hamster.jpg

We now have two hamsters and neither of them is in the slightest bit intimidated by our hordes of cats - in fact one of the hamsters usually has the last laugh, he'll monkey-bar along the top and nibble their paws if they stand on the cage for too long :) We do make sure their cages are always secure though, I'm not sure it would be so much fun if they were let out...

We did have rats a while back, and a couple of times they got out and roamed the house during the night without any problems. We also have a rabbit in the garden, and the cats love sitting on top of his run.

I should add to all this that our cats are complete softies, and things might not work out as well with all fluffy felines! Out of ten cats to date, there has only been one case of them bringing in a bird, and to be honest I bet they found that dead! :) We've had a frog twice (which survived, although it didn't half squeal, which I didn't know they did!), and plenty of worms, but apart from that it's paper bags, dog toys, a sausage roll and once a whole slice of pizza!

We have had a hamster with cats as well, and had no trouble. In fact when you put him in his ball to run around he would scare the cats by chasing them around in it.

Mine 2 cats are also too stupid to catch things outside as well, only had one mouse and that was alive still, and i had to catch it and put it back out. They only poke things to see if they move, and frogs scare them with the noise they make.

I wouldn't suggest guinea pigs either. We had guinea pigs and our next door neighbours cat was obsessed with them, would spend all day trying to work out how to get at them. The guinea pigs used to spend all their time hiding from it.

ferrets are ok with cats. They recognise one another as predators and can end up getting on quite well.

I have a canary as well as four cats. The canary is hanging in his cage from a curtain pole that goes across my bay window and the cats sit underneath with their eyes bugging out! I have had budgies before and one of the cats used to sunbathe on the top of the cage whilst having its fur plucked by the budgies underneath.

Just to let you know dogs are a bit risky. Ive got dogs with a cat and the dogs just torment the cat all day long, chasing it, barking at it, going mad every time they see it. At first the cat just ignored them and spent most time outdoors avoiding them but now shes started getting her own back by scratching them and winding them up by walking in front of them all the time. Not good.

Rabbits are ok, they confuse the cat by running up to it. The cat then runs off. Cats usually like to watch things first and don't understand the idea of just running up and looking at something.

We have a very large male cat, a ridgeback bitch and a large aquarium full of tropical fish.
All the lot of them get on really well!

ferrets dont get along with any pets they are hunters and could never be trusted 100 per cent with other animals except a dog they are used to

My ridgeback bitch was great with the cat - but used to swim in my carp pond chasing the fish. Little cow.
