Cafe Guru between west street and division street is nice, and a bit different

Zeenats is great and a nice traditional indian in Attercliffe

As far as takeaways go, they dont deliver but Bilash on sharrow vale is class.

I'll second cafe guru, had a meal there last month and it was great.

Also if you want to eat so much you can't walk then Cha Cha's is the place to go. Its pretty basic decor wise but the food more than makes up for it, one of my favourite places to eat in sheff.

cool...what are the worst ones out here in Sheffield?... Heard bad opinions about Balti King, but I found it to be a nice place.

Take away wise, Curry Tonight is bloody awful. Avoid like the plague. Ill second Cafe Guru as being good though, although its not your usual '8 pints and a ruby' kind of curry house.

Best I have had is The Everest on Chesterfield Road, ate there this Tuesday passed, excellent service, ambience and the food was top notch - even the beer which to be honest is usually pretty lame in restaurants was good.

Butlers curry house is the best in my opinion. Great food, great service and very reasonable. 192 Brook hill, just off the big round about.

In general, most of the curry houses in generally are alright, the two I've really liked are Butlers and Woodseats Tandoori.

In terms of bad curry houses, avoid the Balti King in Broomhill, truly the worst I've been to.

i just heard a few times that the food isnt up to scratch, cos i dont think its a cheap place, so when you pay a decent amount for a meal you expect good food.....but on the same note ive heard good reports about the food and service, like i say ive heard mixed reports and i suppose people expect different things. Ive never actually been even though i live just round the corner, i always end up in damons like a mug!

But i think you will enjoy, it definately looks nice ;)

I'd like to know where the sheffielders that originate from these countries eat. I'd like to eat an 'authentic' indian meal and not an anglacised version. I used to work in Bolton which had a little cafe near the train station called the Rice 'n' Three. I still hanker after the food they used serve there, 3 types of curry and rice for about £3.00.

I went to Amraj last night. I'd only rate the food as ok, though that may have been my choice of meal rather than indicative of the restaurant as a whole. I thought the food was a little too mild, I don't like burning hot curry, but I expect to taste the spices in something described as a medium!
Also the portions were a little on the small side and a little more expensive than I'm used to in Sheffield.

It didn't come close to my favourite, Butlers, but if you're taking your Mum out Butlers might not be the best location as you are likely to spot 'ladys of negotiable affection' wandering past the window! :)

Yes

Nirmals - good food, though a bit pricey.
Induz - good and cheap
Takeaway - one on Eckleshal Road next to the Parkhead pub (Sheffields most boring pub), I can't remember it's name

No

Delhi junction - all style and no substance - food like M&S ready meals, very tame.

By far probably the best Indian Curry House in Sheffield used to be Gulshans.

Trouble is it was on the Wicker, so majority of people didnt used to go there a lot, especially on a friday or saturday night (stigmas/reputation etc...)

However there were plenty of locals there who knew it was OK and you never got any trouble.

Their restaurant were simple decor (like the hotels in the indian sub continent) and the food would blast you out of the Galaxy.....

Its always a good sign when 90% of the Indian/Asian majority go there for meals also. Not anglicsed indian version but the real thing.

Chicken peices small, so more spice and sauce to cover the whole chicken (as opposed to giant cubed boiled with paprika and shoved in a pan with some sauce).

Sadly - the management sold out about 1 year ago, so it has changed to completely new hands and it isnt as good (so i have heard).

It would wipe most of Bradfords (curry capital) curry houses off the map.

Shame as it will be missed!

Mangla (Spital Hill)and Gulshan (Wicker) are about the most authentic I think and very reasonable prices. Also the Induz on Attercliffe is really nice. The Amraj at Crystal Peaks is what I term 'Indian for English' - I think the meat is just thrown into the sauce without being marinated or actually cooked in the sauce, so the overall taste is not authentic. The prices at the Amraj are also v high.

In respect of indians, the Balti King in Broomhill is the worst I have ever had. The food was just like water with abit of curry sauce mixed in it.

My best indians are Jaflong, Indian Chef and a new one call Jeera. They are all in crookes and I have never been disappointed with any of them and they all do take aways as well as a sit down meal.

I didn't realise Gulshan had changed hands.

IMO Mangla is the best place to go in Sheffield. Well worth the £5 cab ride from town.

Mates have raved on about New India Garden -had it on NYE and it wasn't all that.

Heard good things about Cafe Guru too - not tried that yet either.

The best Curry House in Sheffield is undoubtedly The Seven Spices at West Bar roundabout. It truly is the "Bhunabeu" of the curry stadia in town.

I can't take anyone who thinks Balti King serves good curries seriously . It's good for students at 3am, when you can't tell the difference between the "yellow one" or the "red one".

My favourite curry place has got to be Ayeshas in Dronfield, excellent food and a lovely restaurant.

Dil Shad is always spot on too.

I wan't impressed with Hasinas at Meadowhead though, the order came wrong despite asking the guy on the phone to repeat it to me again, and it was tasteless.

I'm a big fan of Butlers. Been going there for nearly 10 years, and never had a bad meal or poor service. Went to the Amraj recently and after waiting 20 minutes for two lemonades without a menu in sight got up and walked out. Will try it again at some point, hopefully I was just there at a bad time.

Also keep meaning to try the Seven Spices - supposed to be really good and driven past it hundreds of times, but never quite got around to trying it.

The Mangla still has yet to be beaten for me, and now I live in Manchester.

For me, nowhere on the curry mile has beaten it and i've been to all the main ones.

Apart from the Mangla, I went to Sahibs and it was alright, the Kashmir Curry Centre is great if you're veggie and Gulshan is decent, just don't have the Karahi (too much garlic).

After extensive trial of the Mangla, (we used to eat there when it was at the other shop and you sat in their back room) I've decided Chicken Bhuna, Meat Karahi, and Meat Dopiaza are some of the best you'll get anywhere.

I've lived in Sheffield for so long, and never knew such authenticity existed! I will try the ones in Spital Hill now...

If you want a plate of 3 curries and rice for a cheap price. Then there's a little secret place near the back of Arndale on the same side as that fabric shop. Not sure whether it's still there now. It used to be like a greasy cafe, but serves great curries that has been stewed for a long time. So u do get a good taste of the meat in it. Also, instead of the curry mile, try those Asian-looking cafes called Abduls on Oxford Rd. It is so much better...

Have been twice in last week to The Sweet Centre on Meadowbank Road, Rotherham (just past Meadowhall). Strongly recommend it - food great, good value & friendly service. The Thalis are excellent - 3 selections of currys, rice, nan bread, sheekh kebab & tandoori chicken all for under £8.(They do Veggie Thalis as well). It's not licensed but you can bring your own booze which makes it even better value. They own an Indian Sweet shop next door so you can have proper Indian Sweets as well!

i love the Amraj as i like the whole "indian restaurant, indian waiters thing"....and they play authentic indian music....i i appreciate the immersion and the atmosphere. The waiters are awfully quiet though!. the food is fantastic!

I went (again) to the Butler's Balti t'other night....amazing pupadom sauces there...worth going for that alone! however the mains come in a big balti dish which adds a great touch and the food is outstanding!

Butlers best in sheff city centre IMO!

Butlers best in sheff city centre IMO!

I had some from butlers last night after a friend recommended them and have to say they are really really good, wouldnt say the best though would say they on level with SB's under the showroom - it actually tastes almost exactly the same. SB's is really nice place to go if eating out and their sauce stuff that you get with the salad and baji's is a bit nicer but butlers deliver and free delivery over £10 which is great as SB's dont deliver. Will definately be ordering all my indian takeaways from butlers in future

I meet your criteria to answer - and I'd recommend Mangla on Spital Hill (although leave your expensive jewelery at home - lol). V trad. Punjabi food - you might want to ask for it mild as even I find their food too hot. I'd recommend the Keema (mincemeat dish) and their kidney beans with a naan (the size of a satellite dish).

Decor is basic and the not the place for a first date.

Having grown up eating home-cooked Indian food for the first 18 yrs of my life I'd not go anywhere else.

The Mangla is superb best rogan josh I have ever eaten. Everest is good too but not as good as mangla. Mangla do deliver and do lots of veggie meals too.

Also Mangla is really cheap about £12 for two, starters and main meal. You have to take your own wine or cans or get a jug of beer from the East House across the road.

Also the East House is well worth a visit any way.

The new Saffron Club, underneath the old Glossop Rd baths and next to Hu Wei chinese is good - friendly staff, quick service, and the food is tasty. The best bit was the spiced aubergine side dish - quite garlicky, but dead nice. Also not too far from the Devonshire Cat, so an opportunity for a few pints of good beer before (and potentially after - not TOO filling) a decent curry - ace!

The Everest on Chesterfield Road, Heeley Bottom.

The food is great, naan bread to die for, and to agree with the other chap below, even the beer is ok.

Service is good and I like the layout of the place, with the small columns dividing the tables on one side - it gives a nice bit of privacy which I like.

Dil Shad on Woodseats also a good one
