One of my old French teachers used to be one of Sheffield's best ! Mr Willan I think his name was. Say hello from me if he turns up !

A famous comment from Sir Thomas Beecham: in this life, try everything once, except incest and morris dancing, incest is illegal, and morris dancing should be!

I'd be careful there with your Morris slander (though I would tend to agree with you...possibly, having spent most of my childhood at some morris festival or another), my mum (Melody On) is dancing there on sunday! I might go along too...oh dear. Don't get me wrong, I mean, I've preached the greatness of the folk arts before, but morris...

Melody On is calling me from upstairs: "Tell them that it's not that crappy morris with hankies" so there you go.

It's Border Morris (team name: Boggarts breakfast), which involves lots of shouting and Big Sticks, so you might be lucky enough to see an injury of some kind!

Are they the team where the girls do all the dancing and the blokes letch and drink beer and occasionally make a sort of grunting shout?

No Tony, sorry to disillusion you. We ALL-men and women alike- dance, drink loads of beer, letch and shout in a grunting fashion occasionally. See you there anyone who doesn't believe me....

Hey, I took part, it was great fun. Dancing in the street (or Ecclesall Road) with loads of people in costume waving sticks. What a laff!

You got photos?! And hey is the fancy dress option still open for the meet?! Might drag out the Vampire outfit if it is ;)

Be warned though, it's VERY scary! Even more so than me out of costume!

I have photos of the dancers inside the pub but not of me dancing outside! Bit hard to take the picture and whack a stick at the same time. Would love to see any photos of this if there are any kicking around!

grown men skipping about with sticks and bells in a boozer full of rockers sounds like an accident waiting to happen lol. Post pics on the net please

This quote has been wrongly attributed to many people over the years, from Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Thomas Beecham and even, more recently, Stephen Fry.

The actual quote is "You should make a point of trying everything once, excepting incest and folk-dancing" and is thought to have been first uttered by Guy Warrack (1900-86), the Scottish composer and conductor.

The Morris Dancing part is obviously a later (English) corruption
