They say it's the lowest form of wit, but I wouldn't even give it that much credit...

As for the music living on, yeah it does but it sounds dated to me now.

I used to be a huge fan of Nirvana but things have moved on, and the vast number of pretenders and bandwagon jumpers in the industry have pretty much killed my enthusiasm for all things grunge sounding.

Nickelback anyone?

Can I just ask where those ten years have gone? Really quite scarey. I had a ticket to see Nirvana in manchester as well. unfortunately didn't make it for obvious reasons. Oh well!

Yes, those 10 years do seem to have flown. I was lucky enough to see Nirvana perform in 1991.

I was a big fan of Nirvana aged about 14, and i went off them hugely for about 5 years solid, but i'm listening to it again now and to me it doesn't sound dated at all. I know bands like Nickleback and The Vines can't recreate the music one little bit, but i never see how that takes away anything from the original source. Nirvana still have great songs.

Plus, i find it ugly how some fans are insulting for very little reason. You find it a lot with loud music, i guess it must be linked.

Case closed.

It's the old dead rock star syndrome though, isn't it.

Nirvana made one really good album (Nevermind). The rest of their output was so-so.

If Kurt hadn't died, then I suspect Nirvana would have just faded away along with most of the other grunge bands.

Soundgarden, for example, were IMHO a lot more interesting and creative than Nirvana, but fashion changed and they quickly lost popularity.

But if a rock star dies at their peak, then no matter how good or bad they were (Jeff Buckley is another example), immortality is guaranteed.

Besides which, we can never really forgive Kurt Cobain for giving us that appalling self-publicist Courtney Love, the Yoko Ono of grunge.

Gotta agree with you Mojo, die at your peak to guarantee immortality.

Funny thing is, most of the huge Nirvana fans I know are too young to really have been into it at the time.
I reckon - despite how unpopular it may make me - a lot of kids like Nirvana because they think they should. Because it suits their chosen style.

I'm a rock music man, but I cant help but see Nirvana as being quite over-rated. It's good music, but not deserving of such high praise.

I'm gonna go with you again Mojo, they probably would have just faded away had Cobain not died.

The thing is, a lot of heavy rock and rap fans are not into it for the music, so much as the "anti-everything" image it portrays.

Sad as it may seem, many 14 year-old boys see Kurt Cobain as a youth hero, not for his music, but for the fact that he blew his brains out.

They view his tragic and pointless death as a somehow romantic image, possibly in the same "Live Fast, Die Young" way that people have been viewing James Dean for 50 years.

the "anti-everything" image

A lot of people seem to be rebelling against things at the minute.
I know people who hate 'the establishment' and hate being told what to do, and hate the world, and everything in it.
But dont complain about the cars their parents bought for them while they enjoy their £8000 Uni education.

Most of the rebel kids I come across really have nothing to rebel about at all.

Not much has changed there really jack. I think most kids go through a rebel stage at some point. Not always for the sake of rebelling, just to fit into a group or crowd. I did when I was 16. Nirvana fitted in quite well with the scene at the time as you said. Did used to like Nirvana, but didn't consider them to quite be the groundbreaking band that others did. Was more of a Pearl Jam man myself. Difference is, i still listen to old pearl jam albums and still think their brilliant.

Have to agree here. I was into alternative music from a young age and was very much into the grunge scene. Had all the music from all the bands and all the side projects and the side projects of the side projects!

I did love Nirvana, I remember getting sent a copy of Bleach when I was about 14 or 15 and liking it. This was before Nevermind came out (maybe that should be a claim to fame as most people got Bleach after Nevermind!). Then Nevermind came out just before I turned 16 and everyone jumped on it big time. I liked the album, but at the time was more into Pearl Jam and particularly Soundgarden, who to this day remain a firm fav. The thing that annoyed me about Nirvana was that it became too commercial and anyone and everyone got into it, all the boys used to go mad and turn into violent moshing knobs on the dance floor!! All wearing the same longsleeved tops and having the trademark kurt bleached bob. It took the alternativeness away from it and became a fashion, which at the time I was trying to avoid. (very cliqued I know, but back then alternative was alternative and not so much a fashion like it is now, so I didn't like the way Nirvana became a fashion!). So although Nirvana were great I just didn't like the way they were followed!

I was upset that he died, luckily I did see them live, but I do think it gets a bit ott how people go on about the tragedy. A tragedy is e.g being shot dead like John lennon, he was murdered. Becoming stinking rich and famous, being able to do anything you want with your life and being in the position to enjoy life, but instead getting high on drugs everyday, depressed and not seeking help or doing anything about it and blowing your brains out is just sad and doesn't make you a hero, like everyone seems to do with kurt. There are many people in life who are in really bad positions, depressed, homeless, being abused etc etc who commit suicide. In a way Kurt was a silly idiot. He couldn't cope with the fame etc, then why not give up the band and go get help. Suicide is not the answer and the fact that people worship this is sad. As I said, I was a fan, and I was upset when he died, but I really don't think Nirvana should be thought of as the best band and most influential band like they are. I think they would have ended up fading away too if Kurt hadn't killed himself.
