goldenfleece 08-03-2006, 10:16 AM Going out in Walkley/Commonside tonight......been a long time, about 11 years actually. What is any good these days? Used to hang out in the Hadfield (old Hadfield), Beer Engine, and sometimes Closed Shop. I wonder if they are unchanged......
Ousetunes 08-03-2006, 10:45 AM I work in this region and would safely say that the Hadfield is by far the best pub of the lot. It is the one pub I go to after work.
It's clean, bright, always lively, has three pool tables, excellent cheap food, decent beer and Sky Sports on large screens.
The Springvale is cold by comparison - it just feels dull and boring and I've not had a decent pint in there in ages.
I used to like the Hallamshire years ago (when it served a decent pint of [original] Wards) but like the Springvale, I get the impression they don't like turning the heating on.
The Closed Shop is 'okay' although it's the pub I'm least likely to go into. Further up, the Cobden View is very good serving excellent ales.
But The Hadfield wins hands down for me. (It's also a two minute walk from my business premises.)
Modculture 09-03-2006, 12:02 AM Is that odd-looking French eaterie still there? And that tailors that looks like Mr Benn's fancy dress shop? :hihi:

Does the Hadfield have real ales these days then?
Meaks 09-03-2006, 07:36 PM Last I knew it hadn't? Thought it was a nitro keg student's pub.
I may be wrong of course.
I lost my wallet in the Hadfield last year
Asked at the bar about it, all I got was the Landlord bleating about how there is NO crime in his pub so it could not have been stolen :loopy:
Meaks 10-03-2006, 12:50 AM Erm... you lost it, so that makes the pub full of thieves?
Erm... you lost it, so that makes the pub full of thieves?
No, all I did was ask at the bar to see if it had been handed in
And all I got was some jobsworth Landlord bleating about how it couldn't possibly have been pinched because crime does NOT happen in HIS pub.,, :loopy:

He serves Carling, that's criminal enough in my eyes... :hihi: ;)

I have worked at this pub and I think you may have got muddled by what was said. We used to have loads of purses, bags, phones wallets etc handed in every week that it would be unusual for something to be stolen. But then if your stupid enough to leave your phone lying around you deserve to lose it. Its your responsibility to look after your own property not the pubs.
goldenfleece 15-03-2006, 10:41 AM Last time I went in the HADFIELD was about 1992, and it was full of new age travellers and 'after party' ravers with dogs on bits of rope in the small room, and drunk Irish and locals in the other.......but a very nice pint of Addlestones.
Has it changed???
Ousetunes 15-03-2006, 10:49 AM Goldenfleece - The Hadfield isn't separated into two rooms these days, it's one huge room although it does have definite areas.
As I said, it's a bright, lively place and frankly, if I lived in the region - as opposed to just working here - I'd be happy to spend all evening in there.
It was refurbished again only last summer. There are flat screens on the walls, including behind the bar and two larger screens on which we can watch England's latest stuffing. There are three pool tables (albeit at a quid a throw), quiz machines, a cash dispenser and the gents' bog door still creeks like some strangled cat.
The food is excellent value for money and the beer is fine.
Finally, I don't work there nor am I on commission for stating my case but I just think it's a great pub which is usually busy when others are like morgues.
Cardinal 15-03-2006, 11:22 AM Haven't been in the Hadfield in a while but didn't use to do any decent beer but was clean enough etc. Agree with comments re: Beer Engine but generally the Hallamshire and Closed Shop are okay. The Cobden View is the best pub round there for me, large enough to get a good few people but retains the intimate feel, and serves decent range of beers and drinks.
That end of Walkley is much better than the South Road end, although there are one or two okay pubs on the back streets such as the Princess Royal and Heavygate.
:hihi:
theadore 16-03-2006, 04:07 AM hadfield is a good pub, but very full and packed with students. If your lucky then you will get cask tetleys but im not even definate on that. food is not bad and very very cheap.
Springvale is my personal choice, good beer and nice staff... few too many TVs in the place, but is the nicest pub in the area.
Closed shop is good, but small and frequently understaffed.
Hallamshire has a full size snooker table and usually a dog in the corner, don't have much in the way of exiting beer, but is quite a nice pub to drink in.
Princess Royal, (top of bates street, off springvale) is not a bad pub, sometimes deathly quiet, but serves nice drink and a fiendish monday night pub quiz.
heavygate i've not been in for a long time.
Cobden View (getting a bit far now) is the same as it always was i guess, although i'm reliably informed they either have or are getting wifi installed.... not quite sure why

Try the Freedom, a little bit further up into Walkley, but good for a lively weekend evening.
Also the Cobden View, in Crookes has a nice atmosphere and plenty of decent beer.
