View Full Version : Holme Lane Development

Have heard that someone is looking at buying land on the left of Holme Lane presently occupied by Towsure plus some other smaller businesses for possible development of flats.

What's anybody's thoughts on this?

A plus I can think of immediately, is that these flats will be sold or rented as riverside flats - so the long-neglected riverbank will be tidied up as a result. Is it worse to look a flats or to look at old rather decrepit-looking warehouses and works?

And does this mean the ridiculous plans for some kind of Malin Bridge park and ride have been or may be abandoned?

I'd suggest Towsure probably don't know about it - they're part way through spending a load of cash on a refurb!

Some of the older buildings a bit further up are being knocked down at moment though. Haven't seen any signs or anything saying what'll be there....

Yep, I think Towsure are trying to take over the entire world.
By this time next year, their shop floor will stretch from Dam Flask to the far side of Mexbrough.

I hear'd they're going into partnership with supertram to carry their customers from one end of the shop to the other

But seriously, If the money offer for the land is good enough, they'll relocate. Any business would, if the price was right.

No more ******* Flats! It's bad enough there's all those Yuppy flats in Town without building them in Hillsborough as well.

A couple of steets away from Holme Lane on Rudyard St I think it is - there are some residences that back onto the river and it's an awful sight. I often wonder if they're private dwellings or council.
Does anyone know?

Well Hillsborough is getting flats here and there anyway.

Builders (and I use that term very very loosely!) have been doing a conversion above the Computer Shop on Taplin Road for about a year now. Last summer was a nightmare as they shotblasted the entire outside and some of the inside. It was a living nightmare and I know some of my neighbours reported them to the council because of the noise and mess. They seem to have come to a stand still now so no idea when they will eventually finish. It's a beautifull building (the old co-op) and nice to see it being put to use.

Someone is also attempting to build some flats at the end of Taplin Road where the old Cobblers used to be. Again, they seem to have been at it for ages, building parts of walls then knocking it back down again!! There's going to be three flats there eventually. It's such a small space I can't imagine them being very big.

Does anyone know? I noticed this the other week when i tried an unsuccessfull short cut down there.
The houses were being converted but they look private to me.

I don't.

All I'm saying is that people are spending all this money on developing posh flats for people when there's people who are in much more dire need of accommodation, Big Issue sellers, students for example.

"Big Issue sellers" are presumably the homeless. I don't see why that is the problem of private developers. The Local Authority has the remit for that, not private business.

Why dont you build houses for Big Issue sellers?

These mews style houses are 2 bedroomed (3 max) private dwellings. I used to live opposite them and know one of the owners of them.

Thank you for that BabyGem - I noticed a couple of chairs out overlooking the river and wondered what, apart from the sound of the water they could enjoy. They only get to see the backs of the shops lining the top of Bradfield Rd.

They also get to enjoy the fear of getting flooded every year.
I remember looking over the side of the bridge during the heavy rainfall a couple of years ago and noticing that their balconies were only about 2ft above the raging torrent of the river in full flow!

No wonder they all had sandbags on their balconies!

Gosh that Sheffield Flood article has some shocking statistics! No problem, but yes I agree it's a - err - lovely view of coke cans, carrier bags and disused trolleys for them, plus the odd drunk spewing over the bridge after a dodgy curry :o The houses themselves though are nice and in a very sought after location. Let's just hope global warming holds back for a while yet!
