I have read a few posts over the last few weeks by several different people who give the impression that this bar is prone to violence and trouble. I have to say this has not been my experience but I have not been there for a while and wondered if it had gone down-hill of late.

Does anyone have a good word to sayn about the place or would I be better off looking for somewhere else?

if you have a stab vest and nothing of value on your person then yeah it's fine if not steer clear!

I have been in quite a few times and i have never had any trouble or even seen any trouble. I really don't think it's as bad as some people make it out to be.

i've been there a few times, have never had any trouble and really enjoyed myself. i'd say give it a go. there might be some trouble there now and again, but no more than in any other club or bar i've been to. but when there's black people involved, people are quick to say never go there again, wear a bulletproof vest if you do go, wannabe gangsters etc etc etc, whereas if it was a predominantly white club, the odd spot of bother would be ignored providing most of the time it was fine. i'm not saying this is all racism, but there are definitely racially prejudiced undertones from a lot of people on this forum, where rnb/hip hop/garage clubs are involved. maybe a bit controversial, but i'm thinkin it, so it's gettin posted!

I know next to nothing about certain types of music and probabley couldn't tell a hip hop from a hop scotch.:hihi:

I go there in an (admittedly vain) effort to meet girls. I have never had the impression that it was a predominently black bar and never thought race was ever an issue there.

I could be wrong.

Like you said in your first post though, you haven't been in a while, so maybe it's changed. I'm not saying you bought race into it as an issue, was just explaining maybe some of the bad comments that you've read about empire, why they may have been posted. like eg the 2nd post of this thread, with the comment in it about having to wear a stab vest and not having anything of value on you.:loopy: Definitely give it another go though slimsid, an make up your own mind! An good luck with the girl hunting:thumbsup: (although if you're on the pull, gatecrasher or kingdom is probably better, depending on your age!):D

Ok, you've completely taken what I've said out of context. I never said people avoid Empire coz it's "mainly full of black people", I said that where certain clubs and bars are concerned (not just Empire) there are racially prejudiced undertones. And even if people did avoid Empire coz of the reason you stated, they wouldn't just come straight out and say it, for fear of being branded a racist! If you think it's crap, then fair enough, that's your opinion, and you state it well!:hihi: however, some people don't, and their real reasons for slating certain places is more than obvious!

my view cannot be considered racist in anyway!

I work with and know many black white and asian people and therefore believe myself to be very open minded.

Had i not been in the empire bar with a policeman who pointed out various dodgy types from the criminal underworld of sheffield then maybe i would feel that bit safer!

haha! what a classic example of someone who is trying to deny their racial prejudices! "I have black/asian friends! I'm not racist!" I'm sorry, I didn't know you actually worked with black people! Well that changes it all! Read properly, i didn't say what you said was racist (i knew when I wrote it that's the type of reply you'd give anyway!), you're probably not even aware of your prejudices, you've probably buried them that deep into your subconscious you don't even know they're there, but it shows in posts like the one you wrote at the start of this thread. (note to you; to be prejudiced, does not automatically make you racist, unless that's what you make of it yourself)

The point im making is in no word of the that post did i imply that it's bad because of the places black clientelle.

I was more worried by a white bloke (if we must mention colour! ) who took every available opportunity to barge past me.

I've been brought up to believe that everyone is equal and the same so to be told by someone who doesn't know me that i'm prejudice towards black and just don't realise it is quite unbelieveable!

Kinda gettin fed up of repeating myself now, but i'll say it again if I have to: UNDERTONES. That is, in my opinion, what your first post contained, and your second, very defensive "I have black colleagues!", post.
I don't know what colour the fella was who you were bothered by, and it doesn't really bother me, coz surely one single bloke couldn't have had that much of an impact on you that you'd advise anyone against ever going to Empire without a stab vest, and never go again yourself?!
Good on your parents for bringing you up to believe everyone's equal, however friends, your environment and just society in general can influence you to think a certain way more than you realise, and sometimes it shows, even if you don't realise it.
Anyway, don't think you're one post was that special to make me rant on like this in about 3 or 4 posts, it's quite a number of posts I've seen on the forum that contain these 'undertones' that I keep banging on about that made me finally write something about it. I'm not stupid, I don't spout off random sh*t, I only say it if I'm really feeling it and they're the vibes I'm getting.

I am not interested in a debate about the issue of racism. This thread is about the safety or otherwise of this particular venue. If it is unsafe (for whatever reason) then I may have to think again about going there in future and will want to find a more suitable town centre bar.

My rerquirments for a bar are mainly that it is a place where I can go and (hopefully) meet girls in a safe environment. Can anyone recomend such a place?

Actually it is not that simple. If you want to discuss racism then start a thread on it and people can give their views.

I asked about this bar because I want to meet girls but to do so in a safe environment. The problem is that people are saying things about the bar because they have an axe to grind about a completely different subject. I want honest info not people being overly critical because they are racist or being unercritical because they don't like racism.

Racism is not my concern, celibacy is.

Hate to break it to ya mate, but it is that simple! What do you think has been mainly discussed in this thread. Internet forums aren't that complicated! Like I said, Empire's good, give it a go, and I wish you luck in your quest not to be celibate, but, unless you're a total minger, complete freak, or major bore, most bars and clubs should be alrightish pick up joints (as that seems to be all you're interested in!). Good luck anyway:thumbsup:
(oh and as for the comment: "racism is not my concern", how ignorant! imagine if people went round saying: "animal cruelty/homelesness/aids/starvation/child cruelty etc etc is not my concern"!!!!!!! Who's frickin concern is it then?! They're everyone's concerns and thank goodness not everyone thinks like you, else the world would be more of a mess than it already is!)

Just to set the record stright, I have posted on the subject of racism in threads where that is appropriate (ie, discussions of it). I have always been critical of both genuineracists and ott political correctness.

With respect, this thread was not about setting the world to rights but rather an attempt to improve my own sittuation. If you really belive that people are unjustly critisising the empire bar for whatever reason (including racism) then I thank you for your comments. However, my main concern here is trying to get as accurate impression as possible of the bar so as to make the best judgement about wheter or not to vist it again.

Missing the point, I think.

Peacenlove took the opportunity on this thread to make a general remark about how annoying it is that so many people on this forum (and I think in Sheffield in general) tend to make half-baked generalisations about clubs (and, in my experience, areas of the city) where black people go being "dodgy", even if they can't cite anything from their own experience (other than hearsay and prejudice) to back it up.

I agree with Peacenlove's criticisms. If you don't feel they apply to you, there's no need to react to them is there? ;)

Sorry if anyone is really that annoyed about the topic moving on from being strictly about The Empire, but it bleedin well needed saying
