View Full Version : Sheffield Weekend Club Nights
Hi, Ho! Kermit the Frog here!
How come all of the entirety of Sheddidle, I mean Sheffield, only has ONE good pub and ONE club which play decent music? How can a town so big suck so bad when it comes to music? I mean, Pulp???
DaBouncer 07-04-2004, 20:39 I wouldn't say it sucks so bad, but it's deffo not on the same scale or league as Leeds or Manchester.
Blame Sheffield City Council for not doing more to regenerate the good areas of the city (by good I mean areas that would be a good area to regenerate)... areas like around the canals.
Then more decent bars can invest in the city. It would also help if the council gave later licences (i.e. till like 4 or 6 am) to bars and clubs.
Which, pray tell, is the one decent club?
Equally, name the pub!

Yeah right like Sheffield city council is going to even think of approving something as good as that.
If that was to happen it would be good if you could buy drinks till then, not something silly like 2am when the place closes later than that.
Maybe a petiton should be started for this to happen and who knowes it may just happen if enough people signed it..... but then again....this is sheffield city council we are trying to get the massage across to....
As for there been only one pub that plays decent music, appently this is not true, there are more....but still there is only one decent club that plays decent music.
i was truly concerned about the state of sheff clubbing pre chrimbo, but it has to be said that the last couple of months has defo started to look rosy again.
god bless Urban Gorilla, Pin Up, Planet Zogg, Headcharge, Lights down Low, Sub Rosa and all those independants (NOTE I SAY INDEPENDANTS NOT BLOODY CHAINS) whom are making Sheffield a much much much better place for clubbing again.
Babooshka 08-04-2004, 07:51 Am coming to Sheffield for the weekend tomorrow. Haven't had a night out there in a long long time. Can anyone recommend a GOOD club that doesn't make a 29 year old feel like a Grandma, where you can actually dance to MUSIC that has a TUNE...or should I stick to Hot Pants ?
I guess it depends on what you want. I've worked in clubs in Liverpool, London & Sheffield and if you want party music (either cheesy or house) then you always have loads of places to choose from, because it's SO popular.
The small niche nights are less popular, you can't argue with the facts. They therefore have a tendency to be in small clubs at the weekend or use the larger ones on a weekday or irregularly at the weekends. Which is obvious init?
If you like your music & are prepared to look around then there are plenty of up & coming club nights in sunny Sheffield. Club nights usually come & go. Liverpool had a cracking club scene in the early & mid 90's. It disappeared up it's own backside towards the end of the decade & now has loads of small, weekly club nights that regularly receive all the credit they deserve.
Vote with your feet.

lee burridge @ urban gorilla @ .zero tomoz nite, average age is easily late 20's. or pin up @ the fez club, late 20's crowd again.
both very very good nites.
Babooshka 08-04-2004, 15:23 Oh Jamie I don't think so...not with these pins. Don't want to be the only one in the club!!!
Green.... 'urban', 'gorilla', 'fez club' don't sound like they would play the music to which my bones can jive. Lee Burridge ? I'm getting DJ vibes now. Not really my thing ! Nothing modern for me. Thanks though.
Well I came to Sheffield as a student, am originally from Stoke-on-Trent/ Staffordshire area - and I have no idea what you lot are on about!!!
I guess if you have nothing to compare it to then its easy to complain about Sheffield clubbing.
But, like green pointed out earlier, there are plenty of great clubbing opportunities in Sheffield!!
Whats more - in Sheffield the attitude is friendlier, dress-codes are more relaxed and crowds are more mixed than the many nites I've been to in other bigger cities like Leeds and Manchester. There's less hassle and more opportunity to enjoy yourselves!!
So stop complaining and get out there!
rasputin 12-04-2004, 20:13 manchest3er has better clubs if you know what you r looking for . trainers welcomed in most of them if you stay off picadilly and deansgate. One Central street is pretty decent and the circle club if you can get in.
But what was the ONE GOOD PUB IN SHEFFIELD?
fnkysknky 13-04-2004, 09:23 Sheffield is good for clubbing - maybe not up to the standard it was a few years ago but it's getting back up there. We got UG, Pin-Up, Headcharge, Planet Zogg, Scuba etc.
Mind you being that you haven't mentioned what music you are in to we can't help that much can we...

the main thing though i think is that there's very few decent venues in sheffield - zero have cornered the market to some extent, but for some club nights (like UG until recently) it seems to be an endless round of musical chairs through no fault of their own ... there just aren't enough venues to go round and that's really sad.
something really needs to change in this city, there's some damn good stuff happening, but that seems to be despite of the council, not because of any forward-thinking from them.
i totally agree. Sheffield used to be THE place to be for clubbing when gatecrasher was at it's peak. Now, the city has been reduced to an onslaught of cheese and black music. Don't get me wrong i like a bit of cheese to dance to now and again and i really do like hip hop and r'n'b as iv got loads of cd's but as a hard trance and hardstyle dj theres no variety anymore.Im having to look south to try and get a night running because no one up here is willing to try something different incase they don't like it!!! You can literally go into five bars in a row and listen to the same songs over and over again. It's like theyve got top of the pops on and its stuck on repeat. So annoying but what can you do. You don't have to like trance but does anyone agree with me on this one??
u just need to look around to find the bars that suit your music tastes best........ simple as.
