dalen 07-03-2006, 02:28 PM I was in Sheffield 10 years, 4 kids, & 1 wife ago. :-)
Now I have this large beautiful family & want to relocate back to Sheffield.
However I am not all that familiar with the area and would like to get input on which area would meet the following criteria, as well as hearing your personal experiences.
<any names of areas, please include which section it is in, i.e. s1, s8, etc. Thanks>
- Lots of trees
- hills
- water if possible <be it creek or whatever>
- close to the city center
- close to schools
- close to public transport if possible
- low crime rate <also which area has the highest crime so i can check that off the list>
- basically something with the convience of the city, but in nature and safe for a large family.
Thanks in advance to your input
Kind Regards
dalen
Tartempion 07-03-2006, 03:19 PM Hmmm... how close to city centre?
I'd say Oughtibridge which is North Sheffield out past Hillsborough. But it's about 20 mins on the bus into town I think. It's very near lots of hills and countryside though and it seems like a nice little town/village or whatever. I would imagine property's not that expensive there but I don't know for sure.
I live in Stocksbridge (S36) which is further out in the same direction as Oughtibridge and I love it. It's got quite a villagey atmosphere, very easy access to beautiful countryside and even a big Co Op! What more could you want! The only problem is that it's quite far from town - about 35 mins in a car and more like 45 on a bus.
dalen 07-03-2006, 03:50 PM Thanks for the the area, I will take a look into it.
<one note, I am using Blundells map to look at where the areas are, and places like S36, etc dont show up. do you know a map of sheffield that gives a fuller view of the whole of Sheffield? Thanks>
Also I would like to know more about Hillsborough, as I have seen it mentioned quite a few times.
As far as distance from the city, it would be nice to get as close as I can to it, but yet keep the nature feel, as well as know its a safe area to raise kids.
From what I have heard thus far, not including this post, people seem to say S6, S8, S11 are good areas. <not sure about all the areas inbetween like 10, etc.> and I have heard mixed reports about S2 <though from what I understand the most scenery is on the west side.
Thanks again,
dalen
gazelle 07-03-2006, 03:56 PM I live in Wisewood S6, close to wide open spaces, 10 mins on tram to town but you also got Hillsborough to shop in too which is in walking distance, close to schools etc.
Hope this helps:thumbsup:
Tartempion 07-03-2006, 04:19 PM ...or Stannington? I'm sorry I don't know any postcodes but I've heard Stannington is quite nice and very close to both countryside and Hillsborough.
Hi Tartempion, good luck with your move back to Sheffield. With regards to areas it would depend on what else you are looking for cos most of Sheffield is close to trees, water, hills etc. What age are your children do you need nursery, infant and junior schools or are you looking more long term and so may need senior schools? Are you wanting to rent or buy property? Any where on the tram route is good for access to City Centre. So you would be looking at S6 Hillsborough area (which also covers Walkley and Stannington), S3 Netherthorpe, S1 (Town Centre), S2 Norfolk Park and Arbourthorne (but also covers Manor - high crime rate), S12 Gleadless (S12 covers Frechville, Intake and Hackenthorpe as well) and I think S20 Sothall but not sure. If money is no object (which I doubt with four children!), S7, S10, S11, S17 are for the most, very nice areas. S8, S12, S13 are middle of the road I would have thought and then you have S4, S5, S9 and S14. I don't mean to offend anyone with these generalisations and have indicated that Manor has a high crime rate but that is not to say that the other areas don't. All Area's have their problems, but I am just trying to put them in some sort of order and are going on cost of housing. Sorry if I have missed any area's out!
dalen 07-03-2006, 05:38 PM I want to thank you for all of your replies, and hearing which parts you live in. Also the breakdown <by affordability> is good to know.
So S2 Manor is the high crime rate, no other areas with a bad rap like this?
S6 Hillsborough seems pretty popular amongst the responces...how is it price wise? middle of the road or high end like s7-10,11,17?
As for schools, we have children who are 2, 4, 6, 8 <1st grade, 3rd grade>
And we would want to settle long term.
First we will have to rent. I wont even have a job, we are picking up and moving. <im searching like crazy for jobs online, not to many responces, none from sheffield really>
But we would eventually like to purchase.
thanks again

Sorry to be blunt but it would help my answer anyway:
1) Where exactly are you moving from?
2) How much are you spending?
Good luck

kitchew 07-03-2006, 08:00 PM Hmm... thought about top end of Wisewood/Loxley? Quite a nice area, good for families, next to the countryside and yet not too far from town either with a decent bus service (is just up from Hillsborough). As far as I know it's not ridiculously expensive either. I would say the same about Stannington too.
kitchew 07-03-2006, 08:08 PM http://www.blundells.co.uk/search.asp
This may help in familiarising yourself with the areas and the properties available
dalen 07-03-2006, 08:20 PM Kitchew, thanks...S6 seems to keep appearing. <Seems like a lot of people on these boards are from this area>
I have my blundells map out looking as I read through these threads.
<thanks for the link by the way>
UKdavvy, yes you can be blunt...
I would like the most affordable place as possible. <dreaming of 350s but that seems not to likely...450 and up seems to be the norm from what I see>
If at all I would like to stay under 500 pcm. <for a 3 bedroom>
kitchew 07-03-2006, 08:39 PM Ah yes, I'm biased as I live in hillsborough and used to live in wisewood :)
neeeeeeeeeek 07-03-2006, 08:49 PM The years of cheap Sheffield are well gone, I think you will really really struggle to find anything remotely like what you are looking for with a maximum budget of £500ppm. 2bed terraces are approaching that if you want to be reasonably close to the centre... Good luck though, I hope you prove me wrong. :)

I think you may be right, the only places I have found are in S2 for below 500.
Thanks, need a reality check. :-)
ZIPPYZ 08-03-2006, 01:47 PM Hi Dalen.
S35 is nice, places like Burncross/Chapeltown/Grenoside and parts of High Green are good for families. They have very good local amenities, there is a swimming pool, and ASDA, lots of shops (including a market) and lots of nice pubs that serve lovely food, also in Chapeltown centre there are more lively pubs. There are lots of parks about and trans pennine trails. You might be able to get something for your money here. Its got good transport links, by car its about 25 minutes into town. Also good for the M1. Might be worth a look.
Zippyz.
Yellowrose 08-03-2006, 05:20 PM Have a look round Beighton, S20. Good schools and no trouble. Close proximity to Crystal Peaks shopping mall. I noticed you mentioned water. We have Rother Valley Country Park within walking distance which has a lake for watersports, which might interest you. I think we have a local estate agent which handles rentals - property plus - you could see if they are on the net. I think they are on High Street Beighton.
Because of high house prices more people are renting and at the popular end of the rental market some people can charge just about what they want. Social housing (council and housing association) are just about impossible to get at the moment if you want a 3 bed house.
Good luck.
dalen 08-03-2006, 05:25 PM Zippy S35 really does sound nice. I think I will look into that area as well as the one you mentioned Yellowrose.
This really helps tremendously to hear from people who live in the areas.
I have a question. Someone has contacted me about the areas Handsworth & Wincobank, anyone live there have any comments about these areas?
Kind Regards
dalen
Yellowrose 08-03-2006, 05:37 PM Handsworth is OK, parts of Wincobank are OK. I would say out of those two go for Handsworth.

Yes, lake definitely interest me, I found there site <property plus> & sent an email as there site looks like its primarily for purchasing.
What is the rental in S20 on average for a 3 bedroom?

I rent a housing association property at £71 per week, but you have to be on a waiting list etc to get that as its social housing. I have seen £400 pcm around here, and I am sure that was in the window of property plus. There is a house to let on the next street to me, but it is only a small terrace so I doubt it would suit your needs. I will investigate and get back to you.
Erm... hi! It's not me that's moving - It's Dalen. I already live here!
Oppps Sorry. Good Look to Dalen and family for your move to Sheffield. As you can see Gleadless doesn't have the brightest of people!
But it is a lovely area to live and I think you would be looking at around £400 - £450 for rental properties around here. Local Junior schools are good too, not such a good area for senior schools :(

Sorry, what is ASdA?
do you know of any local realestate dealers for that specific area?
thanks

I'd second Yellowroses's suggestion. Have a look at www.butlers.co.uk as this is an independant estate agents that seems to focus on S20 (i think prices are a touch higher though with Butlers). All of S20 is generally very nice/peaceful. Although i generally discount Westfield from this. S20 is generally served by the Supertram network too.

ZIPPYZ 09-03-2006, 10:16 AM Hello.
You could try www.Blundells.co.uk www.winkworth.co.uk www.haybrook.com or www.rightmove.co.uk
These usually have loats of properties to rent in S35. My sister rents through Blundells and has had no trouble, a lot of people seem to have had bad experiences with them though.
Barnsley isn't too far from sheffield but rents are much lower, have you considered there?
Good luck with your search.

I havent looked into Barnsley.
Im trying to keep the best of both worlds, the nature & city life.
I will look into these links, and yes I have seen many complaints about Blundells - however maybe with rent its not that bad.
the whole purchasing a house thing is indeed interesting and for other threads for sure. I have never heard of in my life bidding up for property.
But, Im not a local, so you find out new ways and learn to work with them.
:)
thanks

babsie 09-03-2006, 02:58 PM I live in Aughton and that is OK. Close to Ulley reservoir and Rother Valley Park is within walking distance.
Aston and Swallownest have some nice areas and nice houses too!.
Worth a look!
Hi Dalen, just a thought, but have you tried Google Earth? It's fantastic and you can put Sheffield in and just fly around (so to speak) looking at all the different area's this will give you an idea of what the area is like i.e rows of terraces, Semi's, detached, flats etc. Whether there are nice open spaces, greenery etc. Sheffield Wednesday is in S6 and Sheffield United is in S2 so you could make a start at looking around these area's and then pan around. Again look at Rother Valley and then pan around from there but you will be close to Rotherham and area's of Nottinghamshire from there. Meadowhell (Meadowhall) is another good starting point and from there you will be able to see Darnall, Wincobank, Tinsley. OOooo the list is endless! Goodluck. :)

sanman 09-03-2006, 06:49 PM Look at Loxley (S6), nice area, low crime rate has the river and several millponds plus damflask reservoir. Its also close to Hillsborough and probably a 20 minute bus ride to the city centre. It has good schools - Loxley Primary and Bradfield. It also has the Loxley & Wadsley common and a golf course (Hillsborough). Prices on a whole slightly cheaper than Stannington although catching up rapidly.
Mathom 12-03-2006, 12:34 AM dalen, don't write off S2 as its a big postcode with some really nice and safe areas, e.g. Heeley is very kid-friendly, has the city farm, and you can walk to town in about 10-20 mins. If you see anything that looks OK, why not post the road name and people can tell you what it's like?
joanne76 14-03-2006, 09:57 AM hi there

Hi Dalen,
Have you considered S17 ? It is not the cheapest area in Sheffield but if you can afford it, it is a nice area.
Also, if you need a 3.5 ton van to move you to Sheffield, my son will help you : Green Oak Transport Services Tel. 07721 323528. Please phone him for a quote. Cheers.

thank you once again everyone for the replies.
This has helped tremendously. I have been using google earth to take a sneak peak into some of the places.
Sheffield seems like it doesnt lack for nice areas, or maybe its just the people who make it that way. Either way, we should enjoy our stay.
